X-Raid 2 Confusion

I am installing my 3rd Ultra 6 - I have the following volume config
why is volume so small?

Disk space 212 MB (0%) of 2212 GB used

Configuration: RAID Level X-RAID2, 5 disks (with dual redundancy)
Status: Resync 12% complete, Time to finish 3 hr 55 min, Speed 47.2 MB/sec

3TB DRIVE Ch 1 : Seagate ST3000DM001-9YN166 [746 GB] 742 GB allocated
3TB DRIVE Ch 2 : Seagate ST3000DM001-9YN166 [746 GB] 742 GB allocated
3TB DRIVE Ch 3 : WDC WD30EZRX-00MMMB0 [746 GB] 742 GB allocated
2TB DRIVE Ch 4 : Seagate ST32000542AS [1863 GB] 742 GB allocated
2TB DRIVE Ch 5 : Seagate ST32000542AS [1863 GB] 742 GB allocated

Re: X-Raid 2 Confusion

I would say that is correct given that you have dual redundancy and 3 750 gb drives, the 2 2tb drives won't add any more capacity than if they had also been 750gb drives.
With dual redundancy you would need to add 4 disks with increased capacity to vertically expand. Obviously you can't do this. Can you afford to get 2 ( or 3) more 2tb drives?

Re: X-Raid 2 Confusion

Nope adding 2 more 3 TB Drives did not help.
I even then did a Factory reset did not help.

Disk space 216 MB (0%) of 2951 GB used

Configuration: RAID Level X-RAID2, 6 disks (with dual redundancy)
Status: Resync 3% complete, Time to finish 4 hr 48 min, Speed 42.6 MB/sec

3TB DRIVE Ch 1 : Seagate ST3000DM001-9YN166 [746 GB] 742 GB allocated
3TB DRIVE Ch 2 : Seagate ST3000DM001-9YN166 [746 GB] 742 GB allocated
3TB DRIVE Ch 3 : WDC WD30EZRX-00MMMB0 [746 GB] 742 GB allocated
3TB DRIVE Ch 4 : Seagate ST3000DM001-9YN166 [746 GB] 742 GB allocated
3TB DRIVE Ch 5 : Seagate ST3000DM001-9YN166 [746 GB] 742 GB allocated
2TB DRIVE Ch 6 : Seagate ST32000542AS [1863 GB] 742 GB allocated

Why is this volume not 11GB (17 GB of drives - 6GB of redundancy)
If it never see's more than 746 GB of space that seems a waste of money to use 3TB or 2TB drives
How do I get more space while still using 2 Disk redundancy because it's more like 5 Disks of redundancy not two.

What firmware are you running? 3 TB disk support was added in 4.2.16 (released about a month after you joined the forum).

Re: X-Raid 2 Confusion

Hi.
I see. Strange.
I assume you factory defaulted with the latest firmware.
Don't take this the wrong way, but are you certain your 3 tb drives are 3 tb, not 750 gb?

The disk models shown are certainly 3 TB. They would show as 750 GB if he was using 4.2.15 or earlier firmware. I think that is the most likely explanation.

Re: X-Raid 2 Confusion

I had assumed the OP would have had latest firmware as this is his 3rd Ultra 6 and he has posted previously suggesting he is aware of the need to use latest firmware.
Perhaps I'm wrong

Re: X-Raid 2 Confusion

Firmware 4.2.21
Disk space 1026 GB (13%) of 7394 GB used
3TB DRIVE Ch 1 : Seagate ST3000DM001-9YN166 [2794 GB] 1858 GB allocated
3TB DRIVE Ch 2 : Seagate ST3000DM001-9YN166 [2794 GB] 1858 GB allocated
3TB DRIVE Ch 3 : WDC WD30EZRX-00MMMB0 [2794 GB] 1858 GB allocated
3TB DRIVE Ch 4 : Seagate ST3000DM001-9YN166 [2794 GB] 1858 GB allocated
3TB DRIVE Ch 5 : Seagate ST3000DM001-9YN166 [2794 GB] 1858 GB allocated
2TB DRIVE Ch 6 : Seagate ST32000542AS [1863 GB] 1858 GB allocated

I did my 4th factory reset and resync
Should be Total Drives 15.3 GB - 5.4 GB Redundant space = 9.9 GB
What Ready Nas is doing
15.3GB - 7.4 GB of Redundant space = 7.9 Available space
Why is READYNAS not seeing 3TB drives?
Nothing better than 2TB drives

Re: X-Raid 2 Confusion

That's better than what you had before.

It would create the layer with 2TB per disk and then once that's all synced up sector-by-sector then expand to add a layer using the remaining 1TB on the 3TB disks.

Re: X-Raid 2 Confusion

OK 5th Factory reset was a charm - it took 28 hours to resync! I added added a 6th 3TB drive. anything less it would expand out to the proser volume size.
This did not happen with Single disk redundancy. It took a total of 124 hours to get it resyc'd and working fine.
I just found it confusing that waiting 20 hours then waiting another 8 hours for the volume expansion and it still failed to expand properly when I had 5 disks in.
I still needed to add a 6th disk. If this is normal then it should be clear in the manual "If using dual redundancy disks you MUST have ALL drives the same size"
If this is not normal then it must be a firmware bug. Anyway I am not being paid enough to beta test 8-)

Re: X-Raid 2 Confusion

AKAIK you don't need to have all drives to be the same - what should happen is amount of redundant storage is the size of two largest drives.
