are my disks 4k aligned?
Hi
I'm trying to upgrade my ReadyNAS duo to 2TB disks (from 1TB).
I read that the sector alignement is important but I'm not too sure... so I enclose the partition.log
I believe that they are not... (please confirm) and therefore am I right in thinking that I cannot simply swap 1 disk after the other to upgrade?
(thinking of getting 2x Seagate ST2000DL003 Barracuda Green 3.5-inch 2TB SATA 6 Gb/s Drive (64MB Buffer,5900RPM) )
Many thanks in advance,
Benoit

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredYour disks are not 4k sector aligned.
I would recommend you:
1. Update to RAIDiator 4.1.7 or later (if you haven't already)
2. Do a System > Config Backup
3. Backup all data
4. Verify backup is good
5. Power down and remove both 1TB disks (label order)
6. Insert new disks and do a factory default: http://www.readynas.com/kb/faq/boot/how_do_i_use_the_boot_menu
7. Restore Config Backup
8. Restore data from backup - benoitxAspirantThank you for the prompt reply.
This is what I was fearing... doing a backup... I do not have 750GB lying around for a backup...
Any other way?
Thanks - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredThere is no other way to get 4k sector alignment.
If you have 2 new 2TB disks you could put one in a USB enclosure and backup to that.
I would recommend enabling fast USB writes under System > Performance and formatting the USB disk under Volumes > USB Storage to use the EXT3 filesystem.
Then after doing your backup safely unmount the USB disk and disconnect it.
Then after doing a factory default with just one of the 2TB disks installed, restore your data from backup.
Remove the 2TB disk from the USB enclosure and hot-add it (add while NAS is on) to the NAS. It will be wiped and added to the array. - PapaBear1ApprenticeI would add to the recommendation, that at some point in the near future (maybe Santa's list) a 2TB external USB drive to use for regular backups of all your critical and important data. Having all your data on a single device (the Duo is a single device, even if it does have 2 drives) is not a good idea. Remember a ReadyNAS device is not a backup plan.
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredThat is a good point. Any device used for primary storage should be backed up regularly.
