Netgear shame

Good day for 18 months I am struggling with a problem with RN516 that I am not to list, but ranging from file access problems, the slow disappearance of the files and folders. Trick that both from PC and Mac. I rebuilt and tested the corporate network, replaced switches, azzerrato the nas and reformatted. Now since the last update I am forced to work with SMB1 that runs slow. Exhausted to do tests without finding a solution, I asked to speak to a manager, they promised me that I would be contacted, but no one heard. I wonder, but there are still people in nergear? This is a real shame are kidding me. I have movies and screenshots that show malfunctions, I sent them also to technicians, but no one understands anything. They say that only my ReadyNAS has these abnormalities, maybe it's the fault of the Mac or PC. I ran the tests with windows server, Mac and Linux, and it all works properly: safety speed good performance. So I wonder: after 18 months why not try to change it?

They probably are aware that their smb protocol has problems and do not know how to solve it. I have 18 months to tell the technicians that the problem must be in the protocol and permission management / users, but nobody listens to me. I thought that my problems could be from input to improve the product, because I have met others with similar problems who then trashed their NAS.

Shame Shame Shame. Never even a buy branded netgear cable. Executives and managers netgear ashamed, not you even dare to pick up the phone and call.

The logs attached to your case are quite old. Can you attach a fresh set of logs?

 

Looking at the logs there appears to be quite a bit of fragmentation.

 

I only speak English so I'm not sure what troubleshooting has been done in your case. 

 

With the shares you are having problems with how many directories do you have and how many files? How many files would be in a directory that is having problems?


I see no evidence from your case to suggest that you have tried the latest firmware update 6.5.0 which was released today. Using SMB1 wouldn't be recommended.
 

Btw the 6.5.0 firmware update includes a major update to SMB support.

 

There is a backend settings change that can be done remotely to improve directory listing performance when accessing the NAS using SMB from an OS X machine. Has this setting change been attempted?

Can you describe here the problem you're having please? In case we are able to help you with it...

To better understand the issue, we would need more details about the actual issue.

 

If you have an issue with file access permission with some users after creating files / writing to files with other users, it could be an issue with the umask. I have encountered this before.

-files just saved, you can not save it again to access denied. (After a few minutes it works)
-with the latest update is no longer possible to save files from Photoshop.
-some folders can not be deleted or duplicated, the same for files, this by both Macs and PCs.
-Some Files in the folders are not seen, or appear and disappear.
-Segnala Continually "lost connection": the network is new, tested and inspected, changed all switches.
-I Software, Illustrator, Word, etc. behave as they did not find the destination if by command saves, answers you save as how you do not find the source of the file.
-Lentissima Display of files and folder access.

I saw the new update, but for now I do not trust, because if the situation gets worse, as happened before, I can not go back. What makes me angry that no one in Italy Netgear calls me, as they had promised. What are the various directors and managers? 6 months ago I contacted Synology, given that they have solved similar problems for a long time, within 24 hours I have been contacted. Netgear in Italy are all princes and kings and no one deigns to call a beggar publisher.

An interesting test that would help narrowing down the source of the issue:

1) Create a test share

2) Activate only SMB (disable AFP)

3) Don't touch the file access permisson tab

4) Tune the network access permission if you need to secure access to the share, or leave it to default

5) Use ONLY PCs to create files & folders, read, write, rename, all that, and see confirm if you run into any issues such as permission denied or file disappearing.

From there, you'll be able to tell if the issue is encountered only when Macs are involved in causing the issue.

I'm suggesting that, because I encountered this issue twice already. The culprit was the umask on the MAC. The exact issue I had was that when a PC created some files, they were accessible from anyone. But after a Mac accessed it, only that Mac had read/write access to it, all other machines had a read-only access.

It may be slightly different for you but at least partially due to the same "problem".

 

If you do confirm that everything works OK as long as Macs are not involved:

6) Change the umask of a Mac to 002 using the following article from Apple

7) Use that Mac to access/modify the data previously created with the PCs, as well as create some new files & folders. And confirm that the PCs can access everything.

 

If that still works, complete by proooving it:

😎 Take another Mac without changing the umask, create/modify data, and check with the other machines. According to the initial issue, you should run into access difficulties.

Same if I connect directly to the PC or MAC to the NAs without using the network.

Unfortunately folders now give problems, after 10 minutes work and vice versa, the same for files.

In all this time we are also passed to other verzioni mac, from Snowleopard, to mavericks, up to Yosemite, also changing 3 new mac.

I would try however also "Change the umask" now I have tried everything.

By netgear, they tell me that they want to close the case, because according to them I have a strange network confugurazione. It seems to me an affirmation unprofessional. PC + Mac + switch what's weird? They arrived now with the update smb OSX compatibility, two years later than the others. For now fi trust to implement it because the aggiornamennti performed they have only made things worse.

I always feel that the problem is in a slow response between PC and NAS, for ui PC receives from nas information about delayed permits compared with action to save the file.

Prima di tutto vi ringrazio per le vostre informazioni importanti, penso che finora la più intelligente, ti elenco quello che abbiamo fatto

-già   Eseguita, cartella TEST con PC e Mac,

-già Testato solo l'accesso smb off di NAS afp

-Provato Di Win8 non duplicare le cartelle oi file che non possono essere spostati, anche con l'accesso anonimo.

Lo stesso se mi collego direttamente al PC o MAC alle AN senza utilizzare la rete.

Purtroppo cartelle ora dare problemi, dopo 10 minuti di lavoro e viceversa, lo stesso file.

In tutto questo tempo siamo anche passati ad altri Mac verzioni, da Snowleopard, ai cani sciolti, fino a Yosemite, cambiando anche 3 nuovi Mac.

Vorrei provare però anche "Cambiare la umask" ora ho provato di tutto.

Da Netgear, mi dicono che vogliono chiudere il caso, perché secondo loro ho una strana confugurazione rete. Mi sembra un'affermazione poco professionale. PC + Mac + passare ciò che è strano? Sono arrivati ​​ora con la compatibilità OSX aggiornamento smb, due anni più tardi rispetto agli altri. Per ora fi fiducia per la sua attuazione, perché il aggiornamennti eseguita hanno solo peggiorato le cose.

Ho sempre la sensazione che il problema è in una risposta lenta tra PC e NAS, per l'interfaccia utente del PC riceve da informazioni NAS sui permessi in ritardo rispetto all'azione per salvare il file.

In response to Mr Netgear.
Vs The product does not work without the net on a Mac or PC. The tests were performed by directly connecting the nas of Win8 PC, OSX snowleopard, mavericks, Yosemite and El Capitan.
