smbd: memory corruption
Hello
My ReadyNAS 104 is becoming unresponsive frequently. I have to unplug the power cable to restart it.
I discover many memory corruption errors before the crash in smbd.log:
[2018/02/08 15:29:27.481286, 2] ../source3/auth/auth.c:314(auth_check_ntlm_password) check_ntlm_password: authentication for user [<username>] -> [<username>] -> [<domain>\<username>] succeeded *** Error in `/usr/sbin/smbd': malloc(): memory corruption (fast): 0x0184cf40 *** [2018/02/08 18:46:05.200054, 1] ../source3/auth/user_krb5.c:142(get_user_from_kerberos_info) PAM account restrictions prevent user [<domain>\<username>] login *** Error in `/usr/sbin/smbd': malloc(): memory corruption (fast): 0x0184c300 *** *** Error in `/usr/sbin/smbd': malloc(): memory corruption (fast): 0x0184c300 ***
The firmware was upgraded to the latest version (6.9.2) and I have no app.
This device is too old to get the Netgear support.

Perhaps too old to get free support, but not too old to get paid support via my.netgear.com.
Note the hardware warranty is 3 years, so it might still be covered. Though the memory issue could be software related.
What services do you have enabled, and what apps are you using?

Do you use snapshots?
Are quotas enabled on your data volume?

Re: smbd: memory corruption
Hi,
Snapshots are in not enabled on the shares:
-Snapshot management : Smart
-Snapshot schedule: Never
-Allow Snapshot Access: No
At the volume level:
-Snapshot prunning: 95%
Quotas are not enabled at volume or shares levels.
But Checksum is enabled at volume level.

Re: smbd: memory corruption
Can you download your logs (see the Sending Logs link in my sig)?
Could you then run the memory test boot menu option?

Re: smbd: memory corruption
Hello,
The memory test has failed, the RN104 is freezing at the beginning of the memory test:
- HDD led: ON
- Power led: blinking fast
- Time: 00:00:01
I have to disconnect the power cable to restart it, nothing else is working.
I guess the memory modules are defectives. Can I replace them?

Re: smbd: memory corruption
Hi @Youri78
Memory of the RN104 is not replaceable since it is soldered.
@mdgm-ntgr might be able to see something on the logs that might help resolve the issue. Otherwise, if your RN104 is under 3 years then you might want to contact NETGEAR Support to check for replacement.
