snapshots taking up all available space
i just found out that i had this issue this morning when when my nas started up.
I got an email saying my volume is above 90% full.
I went into the management page to find out what it was i found out my snapshots are taking up all of the space.
I tried to manually delete the snapshots but it wasnt recognised as free space.
Currently, i deleted all but two snapshots to each share i have now. but the system did not update the avaiiable space back to the system.
Any help.
I got my logs and a pic to show what im talking about if needed.
Thanks

Re: snapshots taking up all available space
It sometimes takes a while for the space to be reclaimed.
Note that in this situation you want to delete the oldest snapshots first (leaving just the newest). If you didn't do that, delete the remaining ones too.

Re: snapshots taking up all available space
If space doesn't free up soon, you can try running a balance (from the volume settings wheel).

Re: snapshots taking up all available space
Hello Wickedflies,
After deleting the snapshot, please perform a volume scrub and volume balance under the Volume tab on the Admin page.

Re: snapshots taking up all available space
Hello Wickedflies,
What is scrubbing?
One of the ReadyNAS features to protect user data is bitrot protection. In short, whenever data is stored on the ReadyNAS device an additional piece of data is written. This extra data is unique to the original data stored and can be used to discover inadvertent alteration of the original data. Whenever a file is read a background check is performed to verify if the data is still consistent.
Scrubbing checks all stored data for consistency, and therefore will also discover potential errors in files that have not been accessed in a long time. If multiple hard discs are used in a RAID Array Level 1 or greater then scrubbing will also correct any errors found automatically. Scrubbing does not delete any data on the device.

Re: snapshots taking up all available space
But
There maybe some progress. For the past two days my nas has not been bugging me by email saying it's low on space. So that might be working. When the nas comes online tomorrow ( I give it Mondays off) I'll do that scrubbing and balancing you all have been suggesting to me. I'll get back you on this.

Re: snapshots taking up all available space
Please do let us know when/if the space comes back.
BTW, you can set up a maintenance schedule to run scrubs, balances, defrags, and disk tests on a schedule. I run each of those once every 3 months on my NAS (spreading them out over the quarter). Some run them more often, but I find once per quarter works well for me.
Also, if you don't have email alerts enabled on the NAS, I recommend that you enable them. It's useful to get early notifications when the NAS health degrades.

Still waiting on it to finish the scrub process.
