Is the connection actually timing out, or are you just seeing a rise in ping times?
A rise in ping time has two basic causes:
- the ping packet is getting dropped by the extender or the router WiFi, and needs to be re-sent.
- there is congestion on the network path (not necessarily wifi).
The next time it rises, maybe try pinging from a machine that is connected by ethernet to the router. There is a tool called pingplotter that could be useful (it is quite expensive, but you could just use it during the trial period).
