Barb Gonzalez of SoundAndVision.com posted a great article about using ReadyNAS NAS Storage as an alternative to the soon-to-be-canceled Plex Cloud. We've posted a few snippets below. Read the entire article: Plex Cloud Is Gone But Here’s a Viable Alternative. Have you used ReadyNAS For Plex? Let us know your feedback below. >> Streaming media company, Plex has announced the end of its Plex cloud. For Plex Cloud users with large libraries the question becomes: Where can I save movie files so they’re always accessible without having to leave a computer powered on all the time? The answer: A network attached storage (NAS) drive, of course. Users could save their media libraries online to stream to the Plex app on devices at home or on the road. The end of the Plex Cloud means users now have to store their media files on computers or hard drives at home. Plex Cloud Is Gone But Here’s a Viable Alternative | Sound & Vision For home theater enthusiasts who’ve invested in large movie libraries, it’s worth considering as a replacement for the Plex Cloud. The 626X is easy to use, provides fast access to files, and delivers an experience akin to having an external hard drive connected to a computer. The NAS effectively becomes your own personal cloud.41KViews5likes14Commentscurrently you have no registered or shared devices
I can access my ReadyNAS 314 - 6.2.2 fine through ready cloud with the first entered user name(admin) but no users have been able to ever. They keep getting "currently you have no registered or shared devices" I have deleted them, readded them, turned readycloud on & off, rebooted, reinstall firmware, and factory reset (twice). I have even changed router/modems. I am hoping (and should be able to) to set up access for my family for backup & share files online. I apparently have something sinister going on. For the shares I have SMB & HTTP protocols setup on them. Is there a port forwarding I am missing (I have none)? Protocol?9.1KViews2likes9CommentsOpenVPN bridge on ReadyNAS OS 6
Hi all! Just wanted to recover old topic (viewtopic.php?f=36&t=38783) related to OpenVPN bridge mode on ReadyNAS. As described in previous topic, adding new bridge leads to the error: brctl addbr br0 add bridge failed: Package not installed The cause may be that kernel is compiled without some needed option (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/8080 ... -installed), guys from previous topic also figured it out. So, i'm just wondering, if there any workarounds? Does Netgear plan to include needed functionality to ReadyNAS OS kernel?1.6KViews2likes0CommentsHiding files (at least a bit) in DLNA
I have seen some posts asking how to hide items in DLNA since DLNA has no user authentication. Having not previously been a DLNA user, I couldn't answer. Now, I can make a couple of suggestions: The only question is, who do you want to hide them from? If you only need to hide them from DLNA users and you don't mind that they are also hidden from you in DLNA, there are two solutions. The first, and most obvious, is put them in a ahare with DLNA disabled. This is the answer most often given. There is another way if, for some reason, that doesn't suit you. A folder hidden in Linux (starts with a dot) is hidden in DLNA. And you cannot manually type in the directory name and get there, or anywhere inside, at least on the limited number of devices I've tested with. In Windows, and likely any other device that uses SMB, you can see the folder if you have enabled showing hidden files, and you can always type in the folder name in Windows Explorer. So, as an example, typing \\IP.of.your.NAS\Videos\.hidden in either a Windows Explorer address bar or the Search window will open that folder (assuming you have the proper privilages). But modifying a Windows Explorer title bar that was opened by clicking the DLNA link in "My Computer" by adding the hidden folder )or anyting inside it) will not get you there. Note that making the folder hidden as a Windows attribute has no effect at all in DLNA. I assume that the folder will also be hidden in NFS, since it's Linux based. But ls -all shows hidden files and folders in Linux. I don't know about other protocols. I don't know what impact it will have on Mac users, it being Linux based. A caveat is that you can't create such a folder in Windows. But you can via the NAS UI. Note that when you do so in the UI, it will immediately be hidden, but it's really there. You can also create it via SSH. Of course, calling is something like .YouAreNotGoingToGuessThis is less likely to be "stumbled on" than .hidden. Still, it's not really secure. You can tie down SMB security by right-clicking on the folder in Windows, selecting the Security tab, and making the changes you need to. But that might not do anythng for anyone using other protocols (NFS, AFP, FTP, etc.). So, still not really secure; but might keep out curious not-so-computer-savy eyes.2.6KViews2likes1CommentAntivirus: A lot of false positives since 6.9.2
I've been getting a lot more false positives lately. I've double checked myself by uploading the suspected file to virustotal.com and almost always the file comes back clean. I made mention of a feature request for the ability to exluded certain directories, etc. but no data or projected OS release was noted. Is this on the roadmap at all, other than "soon"?602Views2likes0CommentsFactory reset also format disks ?
Hi, I had an issue with my RN 10400 recently bought. I played with the parameters to add a friend as user so he can access it. I finally managed to do it. But then I couldn't access my own nas locally on the file explorer like I used to. I didn't manage to make it work again, so by searching a bit, I found a button to reset the parameter to factory. I had to type the word "FACTORY". I thought this would reset all the parameter to the default value like told. Since there was no word saying it will also delete the content of all the disks inside. But instead the volumes was wiped and rebuilt. So my question is : My data are lost, nothing I can do to retrieve it ? My suggestion is : When we do what I did, put a warning in bold red capslock that says it will erase all the disks... I thought it was just to reset the parameters/settings or the firmware...2.6KViews1like3CommentsFile Permissions on Downloads. Can't move, rename or delete files.
Hi Guys This is not really a question but an answer to a question I asked on the old forum a couple of times without resolution. Despite setting everything as I thought it should be and leaving most things as defaults I consistently had an issue with downloaded files having permissions set so that I couldn't move them, rename them etc.. It might be that it was something specific to my set up but I had the same issue on a Duo v1 and then on a Duo v2. For background, I use a service called Showsrss.info to send magnet files for shows I subscribed to directly to a Transmission Add-on running on my ReadyNAS. This works beautifully and the files download onto the Media share on my ReadyNAS before the wonderful utility Hazel moves them and renames them for me. However, Hazel was being stumped because I didn't have proper permissions to move the files. I couldn't work out how to fix this and asked for help here. No-one else had an answer either so I just continued on using the "Reset Permissions" button on the shares tab of the ReadyNAS web interface manually. I continued doing this until my Web Interface locked up and I was stumped. I followed advice found here and contacted NetGear tech support. I booted the ReadyNAS into Tech Support Mode and supplied the Telnet number to tech support. In the end they didn't have to do anything because rebooting into normal mode seems to have fixed the problem. However, I decided that, as the downloading and streaming seemed to continue working even when I couldn't access the web interface to reset permissions, I should seek a solution to the permissions problem. Netgear tech support suggested asking the author of the Add-On for advice and I did. The wonderful Stefan supplied the following advice which has worked beautifully: 1) Set the permission flags in Transmission so that Hazel can access and move the files, no matter what user initially wrote them to the disk. To do this, stop the Transmission add-on, then click on the “Edit settings.json” button. In the text window scroll down until you find the “umask” entry. Change from 18 (default) to 0. Save the file and restart transmission. 2) Make sure that files and folders within the share Transmission saves the downloads to are owned by “admin/admin” instead of the “nobody/nogroup” default. Make sure that “Automatic Permissions” is checked and to “Reset Permissions” after this change. Of course you can use both methods in parallel. I hope this helps anyone else who has had a similar question or who finds themselves struggling with this in the future. Cheers, Grouty3.6KViews1like1CommentNV+ and remote file access
I have a ReadyNAS NV+ (sparc) running RAIDiator 4.1.14 [1.00a043]. I have a number of shares that I would like to make securely assessable via the web. I have a mix of Mac and Windows machines including Windows on the Mac via Parallels. Since WebDAV no longer seems to work in the Windows environment I wondered if there's another option. ReadyNAS Remote was enabled in 4.1.14 but it seems like it's converting to ReadyCloud and following the guidelines on the readynas site I can't seem to get either working. Am I wasting my time? Is there a way to get remote access to my NAS in a cloud-like or webDAV like way? Please help. Thanks, - Charles7.8KViews1like15CommentsMap Drives and VPN using ReadyCLOUD
So I'm running a 312 and I've been happy with it for a long time. I want to setup a laptop to be able to have the mapped drives from outside my LAN. I had thought ReadyNAS Remote was the solution, but it looks like it's been folded into ReadyCLOUD. I installed ReadyCLOUD, but it looks like just a syncing/backup service which isn't what I'm looking for. Does NETGEAR have a VPN solution for mapping my drives outside of my LAN?4.3KViews1like1CommentReadyCloud replaces ReadyNAS Remote and other confusion...
The release notes for 6.2 says that ReadNAS Remote has been replaced by ReadyCloud and a ReadyCloud PC Desktop app... Unfortunately, I cannot get live help via Netgear support because I am outside of the 90 day window on my NAS. Here is the problem: I am unable to get the ReadyCloud desktop app to successfully establish a remote VPN connection to my ReadyNAS 102 the way ReadyNAS Remote did. It works fine when I am on the local network. But not remotely. I use my ReadyCloud login credentials on the desktop app but it only says "Online (VPN Disconnected)". I hit the refresh button, which puts it in "connecting..." mode for a long time, then it finally comes back again only to say it can see the NAS is online, but can't connect via VPN to display the shares. Note that using the readycloud.netgear.com website works fine. I can see my shares via the web just fine. It is the desktop client app that is not working. Any help appreciated.9.5KViews1like14Comments
