orbi 870 series
54 TopicsConsistent Internet drops
Hi - I recently purchased the Orbi 870 series (router plus 3 satellites) and I currently have 2 satellites hard wired to the 871 router and 1 satellite connected wireless. On a regular basis my internet connection will slow to a crawl (download speeds of 1-2 MB and upload speeds the same) for several minutes. I have had to power cycle the router or occasionally the closest satellite to resolve the issue. Sometimes other satellites and router do not have the issue and it is isolated to one satellite. This happens fairly often to me, but I could not find anyone else with the exact same issue. I upgraded to Orbi 870 from an Alien Amplifi system and I absolutely loved Alien, but they stopped making them so I needed to transition to something that had longer term support. My home internet is a 2GB plan with kinetic and when the Orbi is working it is fantastic, but this dropping/slowing has been happening so often that it has become really frustrating since both my wife and I work from home most days. Here is my system info: RBE871 - Router RBE870 - Satellite #1 - Wireless RBE870 - Satellite #2 - Hard wired RBE870 - Satellite #3 - Hard wired Kinetic 2GB Internet I have looked at logs and verified I am on the latest firmware, but this issue has been persistent and there doesn't seem to be any obvious causes so I am here for some help. Let me know if I need to provide some more information/screenshots/etc... Thanks, Trent15Views0likes4CommentsOrbi 872, IPv6 & Gigaclear
Is there anyone on a Gigaclear service using IPv6 on this model Orbi and can help with the settings needed? I've a case open with Gigaclear at the moment. I have a fixed IPv4 address. Using a Linksys Velop router the IPv6 assignment was picked up quite happily (I think this was set to Auto or DHCP or similar but I don't have the router now as it had to be replaced and the Orbi took over, so can't check exactly) and the line based all the tests at https://test-ipv6.run/ and https://test-ipv6.com/ The Orbi however doesn't even see the IPv6 coming down the wire towards the WAN interface although Gigaclear confirm it's live on my line and the WAN interface stays resolutely blank (see the screen shot below) I've tried all the various sensible settings under the IPv6 tab on the Orbi web interface but nothing works (ONT and router rebooted on each change and re-tested). Anybody with this router and a Gigaclear line able to say "oh yes, it's this!" and has a working IPv6 setup would be really helpful? TIA! Chris B241Views0likes18CommentsOrbi 870 Firmware Updates
It seems the last firmware update was in the later half of 2025 i.e. Sep/October. Just wondering if another one is planned soon? 1 year between updates seems like an awfully long time. Does anyone have knowledge on when the next 870 update will be / what it should address? I noticed one of my nodes backhaul degrades over time - I manually restart it from time to time but I hope there is a firmware fix.161Views0likes1CommentAccessing orbilogin.local shows an error "certificate is using a broken key size" in Safari MacOS
The attached screen shot shows the error when trying to access the admin interface at orbilogin.local on my network using Safari in MacOS Sequoia. It seems to be related to another Netgear domain: routerlogin.net Issued by: routerlogin.net Expires: Sunday, 8 October 2124 at 08:55:21 British Summer Time @ "routerlogin.net" certificate is using a broken key size Apart from setting to "Always Trust" which I'm loath to do, is there a workaround for this certificate issue? Neither the Netgear forums nor a Google search give anything particularly relevant. TIA Chris213Views0likes17CommentsHow many satellites for WiFi 7 in tall old home?
I have an Orbi RBR50 with three satellites in my 3-story, 125-year-old home with lathe plaster walls. The RBR50 is on the 2nd floor, satellites on the 1st and 3rd floors and an outdoor unit in the garage for summertime patio use. Now that the RBR50 system is no longer supported, I'm looking at WiFi 7 systems and wondering if I still need as many units to overcome the old walls.Solved99Views0likes7CommentsOrbi RBE872 ordered, supplied as RBE871
Can anyone confirm whether the RBE871 is a UK Netgear supplied device or is this some sort of grey-import? The UK Netgear site doesn't show the 871 for sale but does offer the 872. I'm based in the UK (England) and am about to raise a complaint with Amazon UK, as both times I've ordered this model (see screen shot) which it's claimed is the RBE872 model, the item I received whilst new, un-opened and shrink-wrapped etc claims on the boxes (outer & inner) to be an 872 yet when opened, the base of the unit and the web interface both quite clearly show it as an 871 unit. Can anyone throw any light on how/why this might be? Is there some subtle numbering distinction I'm not aware of that means they're actually one and the same unit or am I simply being conned? Model Number: RBE871 Firmware Version: v10.5.20.4.1.3.5 App Version: 2.53.0.43 I have an Orbi 871 Mesh System with two satellites in my home. I turned on my Guest Wifi, assigned a unique Guest SSID to make it easy to locate for my guests, and set the password from the phone app (at first) then the web side of things (via http://orbilogin.com). Both avenues seemed a relatively intuitive process, but in the end the guest SSID was not able to be seen by any external device. I even attempted to use QR Code generated in the Guest Wifi part of the app to see if the phones could link up with no success. I also tried to manually enter the Guest SSID and password just in case it was hidden (for some reason) and received "Connection Unsuccessful - make sure [Guest Wi-Fi] is turned on and in range" messages from the phones. I had similar unsuccessful attempts for the guest laptops when trying to manually connect. Since the satellite was only a few feet away and functioning, I dismissed range as not being the issue. I attempted rebooting the Orbi 871 router after making the changes, I rebooted the phones, tried other phones, I switched Access Control ON and checking the box to allow all new devices to connect, rebooted the router again (and again) to no avail. No SSID can be seen/detected from from external devices despite the Orbi app and the web interface "looking" like the Guest Wi-Fi is ON with no apparent errors. Orbi 870 Series v10.5.20.4 1 Gateway with 2 Satellites Every 12 hours the satellites bounce their WiFi backhaul connection to the gateway. Tried the various suggestions I've found: Satellites get their IP addresses from separate DHCP server, lease now set to infinite hard set 2.4GHz channel avoiding DFS channels for 5GHz no wired backhaul removed/disconnected and readded the satellites My assumption is that every 12 hours the mesh is performing some kind of renegotiation of its setup at which point the mesh bounces, takes 5 - 10 minutes to get itself going again. Any other suggestions/advice?204Views0likes8CommentsTerrible Support, many problems
I have had an Orbi RBE871 and 2 RBE870 satellites for almost a year. They have never worked all that well, especially for cell phone calls via Wi-Fi, which we need because we have almost no local cell coverage. I have opened many cases. Invariably they end up getting cut off (due to poor cell coverage), then I get phone mails that they tried calling too many times and are closing the case. Most of the time I get "thank you for holding, a technician will be with you shortly"... for hours. My most recent problem (along with the poor cell wi-fi, that they have never fixed), is that the administration app (both on the phone and on my PC) do not show many attached devices, not even the cell phone or PC that is connected to the RBE871. The technicians are clueless, cannot find any problem or any suggestions for how to resolve the problem, then we lose the call, etc.173Views0likes4Comments
