SXR80 under warranty, but end of life
Hello,
We have an SXR80 router and 2 SXS80 satellites. All are under warranty, but Netgear has EOL'd these devices. That means that there are no more firmware updates, etc.
What are our options for replacing these? I mean, they weren't cheap and now they're not even supported by the manufacturer. Warranty doesn't mean much in this instance, does it?

I did find out that if the product is still under warranty, Netgear will repair or replace, as long as we meet the criteria.
If your NETGEAR product has reached end of life but is still under warranty and malfunctioning, you can follow these steps to address the issue:
- Verify Warranty Eligibility: Ensure that your product was purchased from an authorized NETGEAR reseller and you have proof of purchase, as warranty coverage is only valid for products bought from authorized resellers.
- Request a Return Material Authorization (RMA):
- Prepare for Shipment:
- Replacement Process: NETGEAR will ship the replacement product by ground with prepaid shipping charges. Expedited shipping is available at an extra cost.
- Warranty on Replacement Unit: The warranty on the replacement unit continues from the original date of purchase and is extended for the number of days the product was out of your hands for warranty repairs.

I went ahead and engaged fully with Support. Netgear did RMA our malfunctioning router with a refurbished one. Beats a sharp stick in the eye to be sure. Not 100% sure yet whether this resolved all our issues, but be greatly appreciate the support from Netgear.

Ours still function - but only sub-optimally. I mean, we now have products (same as you) that will never be updated and have known issues that directly impact the products performance / capabilities according to Netgear. Theoretically, that SHOULD constitute "malfunctioning" and therefore make the products eligible for replacement. Shouldn't it?

Same boat here with 4 SXR80s and 8 SXS80s. Under warranty, no updates, no support, except to upgrade.
It is the responsibility of Netgear to stand by their products.
The big question is, what will they replace them with if they become faulty?

So, given that we spent somewhere in the neighborhood of $1500 US on these devices, this sucks. Further, since Netgear does not publish product lifecycle data, we as consumers have no way of knowing whether or not we are buying and EOS product. This feels wrong. For Netgear to blithely say "we encourage you to replace it with a comparable NETGEAR product as soon as possible" is at best disingenuous. Suggesting that we wasted $1500 on a product that we could not have known was EOS, and that less than 2 years later we should spend at least that much again (presumably for another product that may or may not be nearing EOS) is more than just insulting, its wrong. Feels to me like Netgear flushing unsold end-of-life inventory and therefore a "buyer beware" situation. Definitely not how we do business, and not how most other companies do business either. I wish Netgear would reach out and make this right. We can't be the only ones who bought these heavily marketed boat anchors. I've used Netgear products for around 20 years. I've always liked them and recommended their products. Based on this experience, I can no longer say I feel the same, or that we will use their products again.

EOL doesn't mean that they've stopped firmware/security. It just means that they aren't made anymore.
They even got a new firmware update 7/7/25.

After reading your response, I checked the downloads area for the SXR80 router. The last firmware update shown is from almost 2 years ago, V4.3.3.200. Please direct me to the firmware download you're referencing. Netgear has literally said that since this product has reached EOL, it will no longer be updated and they will no longer provide firmware updates. If you ARE referencing the V4.3.3.200 firmware update, please note that the download page for the firmware was updated on 7/7/2025, but the firmware was NOT updated. Again, it is almost 2 years old. That means that we purchased a rather expensive set of hardware approximately 18 months before it was designated EOL. Since then, we've owned 3 devices that could only be updated for around 1 year, despite having a 5 year warranty. So..... What else do ya got?

Sorry Plemans, I don't mean to sound negative, nor am I in anyway lashing out towards you. But a quick review of what Netgear calls End of Service or EOS, clarifies my point 100%:
End of Service - Consumer Products
At NETGEAR, your safety and peace of mind are central to everything we do. Staying secure means keeping your NETGEAR products up to date with the latest technology and protections which include firmware updates and maintenance releases. When NETGEAR products have not been manufactured for at least three years (or longer where required by law), there may be a variety of technological or business reasons that the product has become obsolete. When this occurs, the product enters its End of Service (EOS) stage. An EOS product will no longer receive firmware updates, maintenance releases, or security updates. If you have a NETGEAR product that has entered EOS, we encourage you to replace it with a comparable NETGEAR product as soon as possible.
