Jun 17, 2020RAX40 Firmware 1.0.3.80 Crash/Bug Log
Hello folks, can everyone please log all the issues they are experiencing with the RAX40 router on 1.0.3.80 firmware under this thread, I see there are several threads going on about the issue, figured if we collect them all under one location, Netgear may take a look at the issues?
My issue are;
- The firmware broke the connectivity with the EAX20 WiFi Extender, extender can not connect to the router
- Same situation doesn't exist with EX7500 Router
- With Smart Connect I experience some wifi connection drops with mobile devices.

After experiencing the crashing for a while and posting about it, I had downgraded my router to firmware RAX40-V1.0.2.60_1.0.1 for a while to have a stable experience.
With the talk of a beta firmware I went ahead and upgraded again to 1.0.3.80 and opened a support case (on the last day of the window) to see if I could get a copy of the beta firmware but had no luck with that. Curiously though, it's been almost a month now with 1.0.3.80 again and so far I've had no issues with it.
No idea if the downgrade then later upgrade fixed the issue or if something about the wireless environment here has changed and caused it to be more stable. Recently I even bought a new Wifi 6 adapter for my pc to see if that might cause the crash (previously I had no Wifi6 devices yet) and still it's been a week or so with no issues.
After complaining on the officiale Netgear FB page, I was contacted directly by the Italian Netgear support, I must say, very polite and capable.
They made me sign to get the beta firmware and since I installed it (V1.0.3.83_1.0.2) I had no more problems (on the same network I also have an EAX20 that was arguing a lot with the RAX40).
I activated AX and SmartConnect on both of them and finally I have a high performance Wi-Fi network without reboots or continuous bugs.
I'm still waiting a few days before exulting definitively but the premises are good.- itsmehueyLuminary

I contacted them with updates regarding my experience about 2 weeks ago and yet they still haven't gotten back to me. Support has fallen off the face of the earth again for me. I'm hoping they finalise the new firmware soon, as I have a similar experience as you, albeit only 1 initial dropout on the first day after installing the beta. It's been MONTHS, I seriously don't understand why they're taking so long to finalise the firmware.

I'm using firmware 1.0.3.80 and have been experiencing issues, wifi dropped out today and some devices did not recconect without a reboot. Could someone from support get me in the beta tester program? I would like to assist in finding bugs/issues with this device.
Also it seems that the router is changing channels or using other channels then the one selected, not even when using DFS channels.
- jweaver4475Aspirant
Also I am only able to select channels 36-64 while using 160mhz (up to 2400mb/s),
Is this a bug? Should I be able to use UNII-3 channels 149-165?
I know only 149 or 150 whould give the full 160mhz wide channel.

Thanks all for the info, my router has auto updated to 1.0.3.80 and broke itself, I used it for AP and suddently it stopped working.
Hard reset it and it failed to let me change SSID, password, region, everything. I can only use the standard SSID/password, what the heck.
Found this thread and I cannot believe almost 6 months now and they didn't fix the firmware, and the broken firmware is still auto updating to our router!
- jweaver4475AspirantI seen this post on the netgear RAX40 support page, probably not a great idea to run old firmware as it appears there is a security misconfiguration.
Security Advisory for Security Misconfiguration on RAX40, PSV-2019-0267
https://kb.netgear.com/000062356/Security-Advisory-for-Security-Misconfiguration-on-RAX40-PSV-2019-0267
They advise to update to the latest firmware. This is an issue is on firmware prior to 1.0.3.80. So if your running previous versions you could be at risk. Hopefully they fix the firmware but, it doesn’t seem like it.
I chatted with support and they couldn’t answer any questions I had about my router. Waited 45 minutes without a reply to a basic question and I’ve also posted a few questions on here but, it doesn’t seem like any netgear support are active in the community or they are just dodging any post about this router.
Firmware 1.0.3.80 has just been pulled as a download option. It was there last weekend when I updated a RAX40 to get WPA3. Hopefully this means a new version is on the way. I can't believe they are going to leave us with an old firmware verson that doesnt have WPA3 or the security patches.
- With all these issues they still sell this router.
- ninjadudexpAspirantIt blows my mind away that people can't share the firmware and that it's still not fixed but also that to get the firmware you need to call support in which they try and make you pay for fixing a product that is known to have issues. This is annoying I just went back to my wrt1900ac. I wish they would just publish the beta firmware that seems to work as I need the extra range for security cameras.

Beta firmware can be very unpredictable and some times the firmware is written to test on a select few devices with the aid of level 2 support.
This way they can control the whole process and find the results in an orderly method which means fixes are quicker. So let's see... I bought this POS about a year ago, it didn't work and it still doesn't work correctly. The choice is constant disconnects or drop back to firmware thay has serious security issues. Damned if you do and damned if you don't. But wait!!! There's beta firmware to correct the problem! Aw-w-w, but you can't get it and there's no plan for general release. Moderators are hiding under their desks. Support wants you to PAY so they can tell you that they don't have a solution. Sounds like a great deal to me. What a flippin circle J! Fix it or refund our money. I'll be posting the CEO's email address and I encourage each of you to tell him about his RAX40 team.
Guys,
After 2 months of disconnection issues and frustration, things seems to have settled for me.This is what I did and I am sure that it has been already mentioned somewhere in this topic.
Step 1: Upgraded to the latest Firmware - RAX40-V1.0.3.83_1.0.10
Step 2: Downgraded to the previous Firmware version - RAX40-V1.0.3.64_1.0.1
Step 3: Reset using the reset button
Step 4: Reconfigured manually
Since 2 days now, things are smooth till now and no disconnections yet. Fingers crossed.

Having the same issue with wifi disconnects. I've really enjoyed this router until now. In the same boat as many people where I'm working from home. Moved the router so I'm direct connected to my work computer at the moment so the disconnects don't kill me in the middle of a call. Hoping they release a new firmware update soon. Keep getting an error with the download of the old .64 firmware version that the file is corrupt.

try download the .64 fw again, or use another browser to download. Also, as a beta tester of the beta firmware, i've provided all my feedback to the engineers and now it's up to them to release an udpated firmware. current beta i'm on has been solid for over a week.
After many days of chat on FB messenger, the L2 support person gave me call and noted down all the issues. The support person was helpful. Atlast after 15 mins of conversation, agreed to provide the Beta Firmware link after signing of NDA.
Just updated the firmware and enabled logs capture. Will monitor the performance in the next few days, fingers crossed.

All, I have had issues since utilizing this firmware update and reverted back to previous version (I actually have the RAX35 to be clear). After hours with Netgear support they gave me a new version of firmware. It worked for a few days and then started behaving the same way where I had to reboot every 4+ hours of use. Very frustrating. I had noticed that when I went to reboot it that the router was quite warm. I just received a digital infrared thermometer that day so I checked it. It was 112F on the top of the unit. I proceeded with the reboot and then put a small electric desk fan on top of the unit blowing into it. It has now run for 24 hours with no issues. Would be curious if this would work for others as well. Looks hideous but at least I am able to get my work done. The router is sitting on a marble fern stand all by its lonesome so not in a cabinet or near any heat source. I have a LOT of devices both wired and wireless. Not sure why the new firmware would cause it to run hotter than the old one. The other suggestion I have is to log into the router and turn all the LED lights off. Again, I think this helps some with the temperature of the unit. I will try and provide an update as to whether it continues to have no issues. Fingers crossed.

That router needs to be replaced; it sounds like a hardware issue ...

was this new firmware a beta version? but yes this sounds more like a hardware issue than firmware.. I don't think anyone has had issues with their devices overheating, only wifi drops requiring full reboot of the router. your issues sound more extreme than what we've been dealing with. Get support to start an RMA right away because that could also be a fire hazard
- FrustratedUser6Aspirant
I was having all the same symptoms that you are talking about here and rebooting the router always resolved it for several hours. The fan has completely solved the problem as of today. The odd thing is that the older firmware ran just fine.

I've made a mistake buying this router. I'm glad it's working fine for now and thankfully I had the sense to save the last firmware file with a working config (with many of the features disabled). It took them 6 months to come up with a fix and then refer to a deleted firmware to revert to, if one wants some basic features.
The most troubling bit is the future support. I wonder if they are going to just stop security updates or take 6+ months to provide any security fixes. Will not be buying any netgear products again after watching this dumpster fire of a brand.

Beta 83 works okay and the only reason some of us got this beta is that we made enough noise.
Now I'd say we all deserved the v2 and we should make RMA requests to receive the v2. Has anyone contacted Netgear for replacing v1 for a v2?
- Retired_Member
I started having issues with the new beta firmware 83_1.0.10. For the past couple days the internet connection has not been very stable with wifi dropouts, certain wifi devices like the smart tvs dropping connection and not being able to reconnect, requiring a whole power recycle almost everyday again. I contacted my customer service now that Netgear has a new hardware version for the RAX40, I asked to get a replacement to the Rax40v2. Let's see what they say
- RangerXApprentice
I have a RAX35 and like everyone else with a RAX35/RAX40 my router has been unusable for many months so I went back to an earlier router. This weekend I installed firmware 88 and the router is now usable and so far has been stable. At least it is now working with the AX option disabled so it is basically operating as an 802.11 AC router.
Thanks to everyone on this thread for working with Netgear to go though the unacceptable painful process you experienced to get these routers operational at a back-level AC capability. While I agree with everyone that we should all receive newer models of these routers (or their replacements such as the RAX-38 for us RAX-35 owners) I am not going to waste my time thinking Negear will do the right thing.
Basically Netgear sold me an AX router that is not an AX router but is actually an AC router. Clicking on a box that says activate AX mode when the latest firmware has disabled what appears to be the only true AX feature of this device (OFDMA) doesn't make it an AX router other than in advertising only. Any features that are still active on this crippled device are all AC or AC Wave 2 capabilities... QAM 1024, beamforming, 160 ghz channels, DFS, etc. If I wanted an AC router I would have bought one at a much less expensive price.
Currently I think Netgear has just been negligent or incompetent releasing the RAX35/RAX40 devices that do not work as advertised with AX capabilities. If Netgear doesn't fix these deficiency and release a stable, reliable firmware release that reactivates OFDMA and hopefully restores the promised WPA3 and Smart Connect capabilities then I would lean more towards fraud.
I think we have waited long enough to get a working, reliable device as advertised. I think 30 to 60 days more is enough time for Netgear to resolve these issues and restore the AX capabilities to these routers. Any longer than that likely means that Netgear is not going to honor their data specifications or promises and confirm my worst suspicions.

Wanted to add to my previous post...
160 ghz channels was a typo. Should have been 160 mhz channel widths.
Also after reviewing the firmware versions for the RAX35v1, RAX35v2, RAX38 I see the RAX38 is also using firmware 88 so it is also likely just an AC router in capability and not an AX router as advertised. So that would not be an acceptable replacement for a RAX35v1.
It looks to me like the RAX38 has the same specs as the RAX40 including USB port. The RAX35v2 states a triple core processor in one place of the technical data sheet pdf and in another place in the same document it says a dual core processor. WTF? Netgear can't even update documentation correctly let alone release stable firmware with all router features enabled?
I have an original copy of the technical data sheet document for the RAX35 from when I bought my device which states:
Uplink & Downlink OFDMA§—Improved capacity and efficiency
Note this has been removed from the latest technical data sheet for the RAX35... but removing it from newer document versions doesn't remove Netgear's obligation to provide it to us customers who bought this router when the technical data sheet said this functionaly existed.
I have always bought and recommended Netgear routers to others. Because of this fiasco this will be my last Netgear router.
So Netgear GIVE US A DATE when you will restore the OFDMA functionality and other promised updates like WPA3 and Smart Connect.
I need to make a decision. Does anyone know the security vulnerabilities of the V1.0.3.62_1.0.1 firmware?
I have an RAX35 that is performing flawlessly on the .62 firmware.
-AX is enabled and functioning as reported by my Windows computer with an AX adapter.
-I have about 25 devices connected with zero issues.
-I never have to reboot the router. Everything always works.
-AX, QOS, Implicit beamforming, etc are all enabled.
-I never upgraded to the .80 firmware because of this thread.
I can't read the Release Notes for the .80 firmware to find out what Security vulnerabilities were corrected because that release has been removed from Netgear's website.
If I upgrade to .88, I'll lose AX capabilities.
Does anyone know what security vulnerabilites exist on the .62 firmware?
If major vulnerabilities exist, I'll go out today and buy another brand and quit fooling with this thing.
Thanks in advance.
