Clicking sound with Seagate Barracuda LP ST32000542AS 2TB
Hi
I got a new NVX and at that moment these Seagate disks were the only ones on the compatibility list, so I was stupid enough to buy 4 of them. (Shame on you Netgear for not having more disks on the list, and not warning about these disks, the boards are full of people complaining on these disks.)
Right off the bat, I heared clicking sound that seems to be comming from the read-head/arm as it moves. It is random. It is not a 'clank' sound as some report, but it is more of a annoying 'click/tick' sound. I do not know if it from one or more disks. It used a week to copy the data over from the NV+ to the NVX so no, it really is not a good option to start to test one after the other of the disks. I do not want to break the raid. SMART+ data is (of course) reporting no errors of any kind.
Do anyone know if this annoying sound is normal for these disks, or is it a sign that sooner or later one or more of the disks will fail? As far as I know, this is not the dreaded 'click of death', but I do not know. It is more subtle to my ear, but it is annoying, and makes me wonder if one or more of the disks have a defect.

- Pedro_RioAspirantExactly same issue here, sometimes annoying metalic sounds. I have to say that my Duo does not maitain stable for more than 8 days (record). The html does not load, need reset.
- rockdjAspirantInterestingly, my clicking noises stopped a few months back. They were incredibly audible throughout the house (because of the positioning of my NAS) but not a problem at all now. The NAS is silent unless you get very close to it...
Whether this was related to a NAS update or what, I'm not sure. I'm now running 4.2.13, for what it's worth. - PapaBear1ApprenticeWell, PedroRio has a Duo which cannot run the x86 based 4.2.13, the current official sparc version is 4.1.6 with 4.1.7 T9 beta available although betas are generally not good to use for operational use (that's why they are in beta test to determine if they are stable).
PedroRio you did not post the firmware version of the ST32000542AS drives. This info is available on the drive label (original fw only) and also in the smart information accessible in Frontview by clicking on status and then health. It will show the two drives, their temp and other stats and when you click on the Smart info button, the firmware is displayed. If the firmware is less than CC35 it should be upgraded to CC35. Here is the Seagate link:

ill try it tanks - PapaBear1ApprenticeYou will have to turn off the Duo, install/connect each drive to a PC with SATA connections to do the upgrade. If you do not have a spare SATA cable, you can temporarily disconnect the DVD drive and use it's SATA and power connectors.
Be sure to back up you critical/important data first, of course the best scenario is a complete and current backup before you do the upgrade. Murphy is lurking. - XBowerAspirantHi.
I have the same problem in my NV+.
My disks are CC34, so I will try this.
Will it work with the disk connected with a USB adaptor?
/XBower - PapaBear1ApprenticeI am not sure. Do you not have a desktop?
- XBowerAspirantEehhhh....
Not sure what You mean...
I sure have a desktop computer, if that's what You mean.
I sure think that I can connect the disks to a sata channel there, one by one, but a USB connection would be far more conveniant for me.
/XBower - PapaBear1ApprenticeYou can try a connection via USB, but it would be better if you simply took the side panel off your desktop, set the HD on a padded surface to protect the electronics and used the SATA cables from the DVD drive. Try the USB and see what happens. The worst case, the application to update the FW on the HD will not recognize the presence of the drive connected to the USB channel.
The reason I asked, is that some members in today's market have only laptops. - Pedro_RioAspirantI have the issue
Model Matched, No Firmware Matched! Will not download firmware. – Even though the model is a match, the current version on the disk is not compatible with the version supplied in this update.

how the hell the package for the model does not have the firmware?
