Nov 08, 2014Connect ReadyNAS directly to pc without internet?
Can Seagate NAS HHD 4TB hard drives that were in a ReadyNAS 316 be used in a ReadyNAS 104 4-bay Diskless or a ReadyNAS 314 4-bay Diskless? Does it matter what order they were in? They were mixed up.
Also...I moved to an isolated area in the woods. No internet access whatsoever. Can I access the 104 or 314 directly from my laptop using just the usb cord?

- vandermerweMasterWith regard to the subnet, you can't access the GUI , is that correct?
You can reset the network settings by doing an OS reinstall using the boot menu. I think you should read the hardware and software manuals, it will help you understand the device that you have.

He's doing a direct connect, so he will able to reach the GUI and the shares even though the subnet masks don't match - as long as he is using a 192.168.168.x address in his PC. Both the NAS and the PC understand that this address range is local, so they do not attempt to direct it to a gateway (which doesn't exist).vandermerwe wrote: With regard to the subnet, you can't access the GUI , is that correct?
RAIDar discovery fails because the NAS and the PC compute different IP broadcast addresses, so they don't see each other's broadcast discovery requests. The NAS will compute 192.168.255.255 and the PC will compute 192.168.168.255. - vandermerweMaster
DJDOC wrote: Hello again everyone! I'm sorry after all the questions I asked my sister gave me back my ReadyNAS316. I have connected directly to the PC via Ethernet cable and I can watch my movies through the PLEX. Now....ReadyNAS Remote or Raidar does not recognize the ReadyNAS. I think it's because my subset mask is 255.255.255.0 and the NAS's is 255.255.0.0.
I tried to go into the NAS's network settings manually with no success....
DJDOC, do you mean you want to change the network settings and you can't get to the settings, that they won't change, or that you can't get to the GUI? - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserReadyNAS remote won't work unless you have internet access to the NAS.
RAIDar won't work unless you match the subnet mask. If you can't change the one in the NAS, then change the one in the PC.
vandermerwe - if the NAS is set for DHCP, and failing over to 192.168.168.168, he probably can't change the subnet mask. And there's no need, he can easily change it on the PC. - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserAlso, you don't really need RAIDar anyway, so there's no reason to stress over it not working right now.
- Retired_MemberRevised 12/7/2014: I am about to have a heart attack! After almost two days I finally found out by mistake how to deal with my problem.
Well let me start off fresh and say I live in the woods. No Ethernet. Just Wi-Fi through an AT&T card. I directly connected my NAS to the PC via Ethernet cable. I entered my PC's Network Connections Area and saw three connections. One was my Wi-Fi Card connection and the other two were from the NAS which were the Leaf Networks Adapter and the Ethernet Cable itself. Hi-light and right click on the Ethernet and Leaf Networks Adapter. In the menu box that pops up you will see "Bridge Connections". Go ahead and do so. After these two connections are bridged right click on the Wi-Fi connection and the Wi-Fi connection will join and "bridge" with he other two. After about two minutes all three connections were enabled and bridged. A fourth connection appeared afterwards called "Network Bridge".
I went back into the internet and I was able to enter into my PLEX Admin page and upload metadata. I was also able to update my firmware to 6.2
If you turn off the NAS after use but leave your PC on you will ever have to go through the steps mentioned above again. You will have to de-bridge everything and start over.
I'm so happy that I can get back to watching my movies and having my NAS up to date even though I live in the woods! At least now my problem can help out someone else down the line.
My eternal thanks goes out to mdgm, vandermerwe, StephenB, and xeltros for your help. :D
