Drive failed, replaced - but does not resync
I have a readynas pro, 5 drives in dual drive redundancy...had 3 show smart sector errors - so was going to replace one at a time. I put a new drive in the open slot #3 (thinking it would be a hot spare and take over when I pull the bad one #4. That did not go as planned, but after removing/redoing - it eventually took the spare in #3 to replace the failed in #4
Waited a day to do the next....put new drive in #4 thinking same thing - it will see it, grab it and rebuild once I remove bad drive #1. This time, no matter what I do - it still shows dead drive in 1 (old model drive seagate) even though I put a new Hitachi in there, and a new Hitachi in bay #4. Logs show it sees them go in & out, says it will reubild on it - but it never does. Rebooted, still same. Removed, swapped the two - but #1 still shows phantom seagate dead, #4 shows as a spare drive - but never resyncs.
No way to force resync is there? Not sure where to go next, it should have just seen drive and resync.
Any ideas?

- vandermerweMasterWhen you added the 6th disk the NAS would have tried to add it to the volume if you are using xraid. If you are using flexraid then you could have specified the 6th disk as a hot spare. It doesn't sound like you have flexraid set up though, do you?
The normal procedure for replacing a disk in a volume is to remove a disk that you want to replace and insert the new disk into the same slot ( both with the NAS on.)
Could you look at your volume information and post exactly what it tells you on that tab.
What size disks were in the NAS when you started and what size disks have you inserted into slots 3,4, and 1?
As I read you now have six disks in.
Also what are the smart attributes of the disks (reallocated and pending sectors)?
What firmware are you running? - rjamesonAspirantYes, we have X-Raid2 ...
Firmware: v4.2.26
The 3 disks had failing sectors, 1 to 2, but slowing growing so we are proactively replacing them. Every few months, log shows few more sectors reallocated
RAID DISKS:
CH1 - Seagate 1tb - still shows it there, but we have replaced it with a new Hitachi 1TB
CH2 - Seagate 1tb
CH3 - Hitachi 1 tb (this was the first one that used to be a blank bay, now is part of the RAID with successful resync)
CH5 - Seagate 1tb
CH6 - Seagate 1tb
Available Disks
CH4 - Hitachi 1tb - vandermerweMasterThe volume shows as redundant then?
If the volume is redundant then I would remove disk 4 with the NAS on, wait until the NAS sees it's out then reinsert it with the NAS still on, the NAS should start a resync and expand the volume.
If this does not work, I'd remove the disk 4, attach it to a PC, check it with vendor tools and delete any partitions that are on the drive, then reinsert it.
It that doesn't work then contact support.
Of course you should always have a backup of the data on the NAS. - rjamesonAspirantCurrently, it is in degraded because the RAID disk 1 is thinks is a seagate, but is not - that has a new hitachi in there. I have already pulled drives out/in - but it never syncs - it says in the log that it will use it for new data. I will pull them out and test/wipe them. They were new drives.
- vandermerweMasterBe careful....
Do you have a backup?
I would not do anything else until you do have a backup.
We need to get the volume back to a redundant state.
Have you filed a support request?
