Incorrect product description
I've very recently just purchased a ReadyNAS duo v2 and would like to express my disappointment in the product.
After wanting to purchase a ReadyNAS for a couple of years now I was excited to finally get to the point where I could afford one and doubly excited since this was a new version I was purchasing.
The product description on various websites where this unit is on sale clearly states the features of this device. The problem is, once purchased and set up, we realise it turns out the product description is infact inaccurate. Described features such as BitTorrent Client, FTP services, Mobile App connectivity for IOS, (I'm also unsure how true Eye-Fi compatibility is either as there's no mention of them in Frontview) simply aren't possible with this device. At least not straight out of the box or without some level of higher computing knowledge using command line in an OS such as Linux.
I understand that this is a relatively "new" version of the product, built on a new architecture (ARM) but would like to expect that product descriptions don't undermine a consumers expectations and should therefore remain accurate. Surely this is key to business, to satisfy your customers? Sorry to have to rant away, but this is the feeback forum, and thought I should give my feedback and share my experience as a general member of the public who purchased your product in good faith.

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredThere is a community add-on for BitTorrent: http://readynasxtras.com/readynas-arm-add-ons/transmission-arm
As for FTP this is added in 5.3.5 (currently in public beta: http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=148&t=62728). For now on 5.3.4 the RemoteiPhone add-on (see http://www.readynas.com/RAIDiator_arm_5_3_4_Notes) is needed to enable FTP for access via ReadyNAS Remote.
You can important pictures into ReadyNAS Photos II using Eye-Fi. See http://www.readynas.com/photos2
To use this features login to ReadyNAS Photos II thenyoh-dah wrote: go to the Settings (at top left), Preferences, Remote Upload, then check "Enable Remote Upload". You'll see the Eye-Fi FTP setup info that you enter in the Eye-Fi Center for FTP. - Hi thanks for your reply. (and for clearing up the Eye-fi feature)
I did try installing the addon to enable FTP for the Iphone App, I posted about it here:
viewtopic.php?f=75&t=62985
Do you need to set up shares to specificly accept access over FTP/the iphone app?
The guide here seems to suggest that you do: http://www.readynas.com/?page_id=4401 mentions
"When you connect, you will see the folders you have enabled for FTP access."
But there seems to be no where you can enable such a setting. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredWith the RemoteiPhone add-on it should enable all the standard shares for access over FTP. With 5.3.5 you can choose which shares to share over FTP and don't need the add-on to enable FTP for ReadyNAS Remote any more.
- Deb_BAspirantYes, but I agree with the OP, although it's a great unit, and things are starting to come good, my experience with this out of the box was very frustrating and disappointing also. It was described in marketing material as a solution for home users. I am a savvy home user and this product just did not offer the advertised features listed by the OP when we purchased it. It has been a headache to get up and working and I've needed help fom this great forum every step of the way (thank you, kind members!). I think the OP makes a fair point. I could not recommend the v2 Duo to colleagues/friends without a caveat of 'be prepared to get your hands dirty' ( figuratively). The average home user would have thrown it out the window in frustration before getting to firmware 5.3.5. More comprehensive product descriptions, testing on various platorms and instructions for each feature that relate to this specific model & firmware (rather than older versions) would go a long way towards avoiding these problems.
- pugilaresAspirantWhat I have seen is that Duo v2 was offered for sale with description of features partially from Duo v2, partially from Duo v1. For example features include ARM architecture (which belongs to Duo v2) and a print server feature (which belongs to Duo v1, but not v2).
- jleinbachAspirantI bought a ReadyNAS Duo v2 in part because the specs indicated that it can be used as a print server (as my v1 in fact does). After setting it up and moving all my data over I discover that that was a 'typo' in the specs if you will. This is a problem for me. Are there any plans to add that functionality? If not I will have to move everything back to a v1 (i.e. the one with more functionality). Any insights would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
- Sorry for all the confusion regarding the print server on Duo/NV+ v2. The print server feature will not be enabled on these products.
- Just a quick note I'd like to add:
I have been very impressed with the latest firmware 5.3.5 release. Since installation it has fixed many problems for me, I almost have it working as I needed/expected it to! :D
This is a much improved interface and promised easy to use functionality is getting there. Great job guys! - emobadger,
Thanks for the comment. What is still on your 'needed/expected' list that the software doesn't do yet? - door_jarAspirant

In my experience? The ReadyNAS v2 doesn't actually act as a NAS. It can't handle simple file permissions, can't provide any kind of reasonable file transfer performance and accessing it is like playing roulette. The whole reason I purchased a ReadyNAS was for ease of use and having support available if something goes wrong. Completely wrong on the first and even more so on the second. Netgear support is seemingly a joke.
I called about an issue I had, got no assistance by phone, had a ticket opened for escalation. After hearing nothing for weeks despite repeated emailing I called up and was advised that my ticket had been closed for non response weeks ago with notes indicating they had called me repeatedly. Except they hadn't AT ALL. The times listed were 3-5am my time, when I'm certainly home (but not available for phone calls as you can imagine). The support person had lied in the notes to hide the fact that they didn't want to do their job, and because they can't read a clock and work out timezones they completely screwed it up.
No apology at all for this. I'm completely over Netgear and their crappy products. I should have learnt my lesson years ago with their "network" appliances.
