NV+ v2 Loud Fan after Firmware Upgrade
After upgrading the firmware to 5.3.6, the fan in my unit randomly decides to go full blast.
The disks and the unit always sit at around 40 deg c, but the unit decides that it is hot and blasts the fan at 3400 RPM. After about 15 minutes it decides its not hot anymore and goes back to a normal 1000 RPM (or so).
It never did this before the firmware upgrade. I would understand if it was doing this under any sort of load, but it does it even if the disks are spun down. The difference in temperature before and after it runs is literally 2 degrees (maybe 41 down to 39 on the hard disks and system).
Any suggestions to resolve this? Should I just put a quieter fan in?
Thanks

- davevandykeAspirantUse a Noctua fan I hear they are really quiet.
- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserIs there a fan calibration control? There is one on the V1 and x86 products.
Putting in your own fan will void the warranty. - chirpaLuminaryWould need to see process usage. One guess may be the Smart Network Genie software in 5.3.6 using more CPU, causing the temperature to raise, which in turn will cause the fan to spin up to compensate.
The Genie control point is a Java Virtual Machine. It should only be running if you've activated Genie. But I don't have a Marvell system to see how it really acts to know more. - HERBIEOAspirantI have the Smart Network Genie software enabled and my temps and fan speed are exactly the same with 5.3.6 as they were with 5.3.5
Fan = 731 rpm Temp = 35.0C - KillerPMAspirant

I have it disabled anyway.
I don't really know why it does it. Like I said, it didn't act this way before the firmware update.
I just leave the device off when I am not using it. Its a pity I have to do this. - chirpaLuminaryI saw this type of issue back around 5.3.3, and I thought they made some tweaks to better ramp up/down the fan. Maybe something creeped back in.

Maybe. It definitely didn't do this in 5.3.5
I left the thing on for months running 5.3.5 and I don't recall the fan ever coming on. That's even with me not figuring out that the disk spin-down time became an option and the disks ran constantly for a month.
I just thought I would report it as it kind of bugs me. Its a real PITA turning the device off and on all the time so I don't have to hear the noisy fan while watching TV (it sits in the same room). - KillerPMAspirantJust an update, I downgraded back to 5.3.5 and the problem is gone. Same temperatures just no noisy fan.
- BanzAspirantI just got mine and it updated to 5.3.6 after I powered it on. I put 4 empty disk in there and it started building the xraid2. But it took 4.5 hours to sync the last disk. Is that normal? I thought since I deleted the volumes on the disk before I put them in, it shouldn't need so much time to build a parity on an empty raid? While it's building the temp fluctuate between 42 to 48 and I experience the same noisy fan as you guys. It goes up to 3k rpm and is quite loud but will drop down for a bit and goes back up again.
