Put disks from ReadyNAS NV+ into 314 chassis? #23588643
I have an NV+ with 4 disks whose chassis appears to be fried. I am looking at the ReadyNAS 314 diskless and would plan to simply install the disks there and start it up. Will that work?
Thanks!
Thanks!

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredNo, but if you have somewhere to backup your data to if you buy a 314, assuming your array is fine support should be able to try to recover your data for you.
Buy a 314, and one new disk to put in it, open a support case and let me know the case number. Support will be able to advise you of steps to take. - bnchesterAspirantSo mdgm, you're saying that with a 314 chassis and one fresh disk there will be a process to restore the data on the 4 XRAID disks from the old unit (assuming they're OK)? I have a backup of the data (a couple fo days old), but I was hoping to be able to simply remount the existing array in a new chassis.
I did this before but it was from an NV+ to an NV+, and it worked. You're saying that won't work going from an NV+ to a 314?
Thanks,
Barry - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredYe, there is a process (support would advise of steps from when to put disks in, turn on NAS etc.), but that would involve doing a backup, then wiping the disks in the NAS via a factory reset then restoring the data from backup.
The NV+ (v1, I presume?) units you migrated from/to both use the same CPU architecture.
Newer 4-bays than the NV+ (v1) all handle RAID differently to the NV+ (v1). So you can't simply migrate disks across.
Another option is to recover the data yourself e.g. using an ordinary PC: http://home.bott.ca/webserver/?p=306
The 314 has a dual-core Intel Atom CPU and performance is considerably faster than on your NV+ (v1). It is a good choice. - bnchesterAspirantThis sounds good. The key question undelying all this is that since the data in the failed unit was a couple of days more up to date than the last backup I took, I will be able to restore it to the current point (i.e., not only as of a few days ago)? I can back up from the current then restore it after reinitializing the disks?
If so I'll order the new unit and then contact support to open the case.
Thanks! - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredYes, you could backup what's on the disks, provided the array is fine. Then wipe the disks and restore from backup.
Open the support case for the 314 and be sure to keep proof of purchase (of the 314) so you can provide that to support if requested. - bnchesterAspirantmdgm, I have the new unit and one fresh disk ready to go. I tried to contact support but too busy or closed. I opened an online case with reference number 23588643.
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredYour NV+ has a 3 year warranty which has not yet expired (assuming the data of purchase on your registration is accurate). You should probably ask for an RMA for your NV+. Then transfer your data across your network to the 314.
