Readynas Duo and WD2003FZEX compatibility
I received notification that one of my drives failed 2 days ago. I am concerned about getting another drive in to get me back up and redundant quickly. I am also upgrading from 1 TB drives to 2 TB drives.
The WD2002FAEX is compatible with the Readynas Duo version 1 according to the compatibility chart. It was not available for quick shipping and I ordered The WD2003FZEX instead. It is supposed to be the newer version of the other drive. http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digital-Cache-Desktop-WD2003FZEX/dp/B00FJRS628/ref=dp_ob_title_ce I have searched and have not found any mention of the newer WD2003FZEX on the forum. Can someone let me know if I will be having to return the 2 drives I ordered yesterday? or will this newer version of the black caviar work fine with my device? Also if anyone can tell me how often the compatibility chart is updated Id appreciate that as well for future reference. I see a last update date of 03/04/2014 01:50 AM. Just wondering how often newer drives like the above mentioned are added.
Thanks for your help.

- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserThe duo and nv+ v1 HCL are updated rarely. If you purchased more than three years ago (likely) you are out of warranty anyway.
Personally I am using the WD20EFRX in my duo v1, and have had no trouble with it. Hopefully folks who have experience with the WD2003FZEX will reply. Though I'd probably try them first, and see what happens.
What firmware are you running? You might need to update the firmware first (and if your setup is old, you might want to do a factory reset). There's a guide here you might want to check. http://www.rnasguide.com/2011/06/22/why ... -readynas/ - JonnyPoPoAspirantThanks for the reply and info, They will be arriving tonight but I doubt I will get a chance to try them until late Sunday. I'm a little hesitant to have the NAS powered on any longer than necessary, it is currently powered off and I do not remember what firmware is running. I'm fairly certain Ive updated it at least once. I'm not sure if it would be quicker and safer to backup the data on the remianing working disk over to another external prior to trying to sync with one of the new drives or not. The (1TB) drive is almost all the way full. I have the majority of the data backed up elsewhere but theres at least a hundred gigs or so that has not been backed up. The drive that is still working is actually the oldest. I will check out the factory reset ;link once I have secured my data and have everything backed up again. I hope someone else who has tried the WD2003FZEX drives will respond as well.
- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserYou do need to make sure that the firmware supports 2 TB drives.
- JonnyPoPoAspirantFirmware was the latest available for my device. Initialization and Sync with new drive was successful and only took about 5 hours to complete with 925 GB of data even though RAIDiator initially estimated 17-21 hours.
The new 2TB drive seems to continuously be running about 10 degrees F hotter than the older drive since insertion. Also there seems to be more noise, not fan noise but like small clock like platter seeking?? Not sure how to describe. I'm kind of a newb with all of this. Ive had other drives external and internal that I could tell they were failing and were making noises prior to doing so but I don't think this is the same thing. Maybe there is some indexing still going on after almost a full day?? I previously did not have the drives set to spin down after inactivity but since I wont be accessing the information contained on them very often at all I thought I would go ahead and do so. Not sure about benefits over continuously spinning in this situation.
I will wait a few weeks to replace the older 1 TB with the other 2 TB for the added expansion to make sure I wont end up having both of the drives fail.
Thanks all for reading and any info you care to share.

Repaired sectors 0 - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserHard to say if the noise is a concern or not w/o hearing it. I wouldn't be concerned about the lp stat events at this point.
You picked a high-performance drive, which uses more power and is acoustically noisier than the older "green" drive you are running. - jm50AspirantI swapped my 2 old Saegate 1.5TB disks after more than 5 years to 2 WD2003FZEX in my ReadyNAS Duo (Radiator version 4.1.14). No problem, but I had to do it from scratch because the old Seagate disks have been formatted with the "old" format. Therefore the normal extension method was not possible (2 TB disks cannot have the "old" format).
Up to now the new WD black disks run without any problem, but as you mention they make a clicky noise when the disks are accessed.
I have the impression that the temperature is sligtly lower compared to the old Seagate diks. No they are max. 37C; the Seagate reached 42C - dstern350Aspirant
I am about to purchase the same drives. Are they still working ok?

I'd get WDC Red Pro instead (WD2001FFSX). Price is a bit higher, but you are getting an enterprise class drive.
A WDC Red (WD20EFRX) is lower performing (and cheaper) - but will run quite a bit cooler. So that's another option.
Now that NAS-purposed drives have come onto the market, I recommend using them over desktop models.
