ReadyNAS Pro 6 failed drive and lost volume / shares

I have a ReadyNAS Pro 6 RNDP6000 with 6 disks.  Disk 3 started failing, and I pulled out disk 6 by mistake, put it back in, and then pulled Disk 3 and put in a new drive.  Now the volumes and shares disappeared, and disk status shows disk 1-6 to be all ok.  I tried putting the original Disk 6 back, and disk status shows it is dead.  I tried to restart the NAS, and I've seen the shares appear, but not mountable.  The logs shows :

"Volume scan failed to run properly."

and

"The paths for the shares listed below could not be found. Typically, this occurs when the ReadyNAS is unable to access the data volume."

Unfortunately I don't have any backups, and I tried to attach a drive to the USB port in front of the unit, and I couldn't make any backups.

Can someone help or provide info/solutions/suggestions?

  • The Pro6 NAS is running Radiator 4.2.31, I think x-raid

The volume status is dead, not the disk status.

This happened because of your mistake (and unfortunately your attempt to fix it).

It likely is possible to forcibly reassemble the RAID array, but that would require either use of tech support mode or ssh. Do you have any experience with the linux command line?

Also, can you give more information on what is going on with the original disk 3?  One thing you could try is

    1. power down the NAS
    2. reinsert the original disk 3 (removing the new new drive)
    3. powering up the NAS

Thanks Stephen.  I ssh'd into the NAS, and I'm getting

"Could not chdir to home directory /c/home/admin: No such file or directory"

and then the ssh session ends.  That kind of make sense since no volume is recognized.  When I boot the NAS, I get

"Volume scan failed to run properly."

      and then this message :

"The paths for the shares listed below could not be found. Typically, this occurs when the ReadyNAS is unable to access the data volume."  - followed by a list of shares.

Any suggestions on what I can try next?

I'll need the log zip file to tell you what to do next.  Put it into cloud storage, and PM (private message) me the download link.  Please make sure permissions allow anyone with the link to download.  You can send a PM using the envelope icon in the upper right of the forum page.

    Hello a-c-w ,

And welcome to the NETGEAR Community! 🙂

Have you shut down the NAS while pulling out the disk?

If possible please share the disk logs and volume logs to check further

        Hello a-c-w ,

Shut down the NAS and try to remove al l the drives and insert in the different slots and check for the status.
