Service Action to Prevent PSU Failures in ReadyNAS NV/NV+
A Service Action notice has been posted in the Announcement forum to prevent ReadyNAS NV and NV+ systems from premature power supply failures at viewtopic.php?t=10259. If you own a NV or NV+ within the serial number range in the notice, please either download and install the add-on or perform the simple fan reversal procedure. We've seen a small percentage of our customers experiencing power supply failure and we want to avoid any downtime you may encounter due to an unnecessary RMA process.

- stefordAspirantCan you let me know how I can access the support tool please? No reply to my request for a code. Tried 2 different email addresses so it's not a Spam filter thing.
Let me know.
Thanks. - bhoarAspirantAre you using the new support link? See my sig...
-brendan - ppriorAspirantupdated my NV+ with the new software. I did NOT reverse the fans but drive temps are actually UP compared with before. Interestingly my health status states fan speed is 2083RPM (thought it was supposed to be 2100 minimum)
drives temps are 39 on 1/4 and 45 on 2/3. This is about 3 degrees WARMER for the middle drives and warmer than I usually run my hard drives.
Noise is NOT a concern for my system - keeping temps down and reliability is my main concern. This system is in a server closet in my basement so unless it's REALLY loud it won't bother me.
By the way, what exactly does the "recalibrate" option do to the fan? - yukitAspirant

From the feedbacks, that is basically the expected result.
My inderstanding is by increasing the fan speed you are helping to cool the PSU which does not have the temperature readout.
BTW, today was the first hot day in a last few weeks around here.
I applied the fan speed patch over the weekend (just in time)
Here is the current temp reading. Drive are just a few degrees warmer than last week:
Disk 1 SAMSUNG HD501LJ 465 GB, 40C / 104F, Write-cache ON, SMART+ OK
Disk 2 SAMSUNG HD501LJ 465 GB, 43C / 109F, Write-cache ON, SMART+ OK
Disk 3 SAMSUNG HD501LJ 465 GB, 42C / 107F, Write-cache ON, SMART+ OK
Disk 4 SAMSUNG HD501LJ 465 GB, 38C / 100F, Write-cache ON, SMART+ OK
Fan 1 2142 RPM OK
Temp 1 39.0C / 102F [Normal 0-60C / 32-140F] OK - stefordAspirant

Yep - get nothing back from the system at all. I really need to get this RMA'd. Thanks. - yoh-dahGuide

Did you get a ticket number? Check your spam filter if not. Hopefully you used the new Support link (see my sig). - bhoarAspirant

Ok, well, that's supposed to work. Any other ideas, Infrant?

The problem I encountered with the support system is that using the "Register" option does not work. What is unclear from that page is that a support ticket can be opened without needing to register.
I'll submit a ticket...

That's why I asked people from Infrant to suggest one.
I guess that they tested a lot of fans and choosed the best compromise between performaces and price.
I'm willing to get one with better performaces in terms of cfm/noise ratio, it will probably cost more than the Adda they supply, but I don't care since it could preserve my psu life.
I agree I'd like Infrant to suggest a fan that provides increased performance, and would be willing to pay a higher price in order to prolong PSU and HD life.
Several people on this thread have asked if Infrant could recommend a fan that can run more quietly at the higher speed.
No one from Infrant has replied.
Can someone from Infrant at least indicate that Infrant will not issue such a recommendation (or give an ETA for one) so that we don't have to wait and wonder. - ard1AspirantI too, changed the fan into blowing air into the housing; quiet operation is paramount. Given the amount of dust 'dots' that nicely showed the pattern of holes in the outer casing of the NV, I thought moving the black filter from the door to the hind of the unit would be a good thing, so as to block dust. Well... it isn't! I soon got a bombardment of mails that the temperature had gone into the warning zone. I have spin-down set to 5 minutes, so nothing really bad happened, but be forewarned.
As an alternative to the tight mesh of the Infrant filter, I now use a piece of fume-hood filter loosely Z-wrapped in front of the protective casing of the fan. It is way thicker, more of an open structure, catches most of the dust and it lets through the air more easily. Temperature hasn't been that low before, I haven't been so happy (also since the 1.0 updater of AFP add-on).
