Service Action to Prevent PSU Failures in ReadyNAS NV/NV+
A Service Action notice has been posted in the Announcement forum to prevent ReadyNAS NV and NV+ systems from premature power supply failures at viewtopic.php?t=10259. If you own a NV or NV+ within the serial number range in the notice, please either download and install the add-on or perform the simple fan reversal procedure. We've seen a small percentage of our customers experiencing power supply failure and we want to avoid any downtime you may encounter due to an unnecessary RMA process.

- dmpizzleAspirantWell color me dissappointed thus far. I just bought my ReadyNAS NV+ off newegg, and was very excited to own my first NAS box. Immediately, I was saddened by how loud it was. I built my PC specifically to be very quiet, and it has a whole lot more in it than this little thing. I also own a Mac, which is dead silent. I own a condo, so I can't really hide the device in closet or basement anywhere. In any case, I was ready to deal with it (fan speed at 1600-1700 RPM).
Then I come to this forum and notice this thread. Infrant is now asking us to bump up the speed another 600RPM to save the power supply! And they have not responded to the questions that have been raised about replacing the fan with a quieter fan.
I really like and want to use this device, but I am close to returning this device, based solely on the noise levels. 2 hard drives, a power supply, and a fan, should NOT be the loudest device in my office.
Please provide some alternative solution so I don't have to return it. Thanks. - muriAspirantWell, it will get noiser
The 2100 rpm setting is MINIMUM speed.
Today was a hot day here (32°C outside, 27°C inside) and the fan was running at 2400-2500 rpm.
And it's only May ...
Definitely not "quiet" as advertised ... - SigwolfAspirantWhat ever happened to the patch for regular NV units retrofitted with the NV+ power supply?
- mspenAspirantI chose to install the EnableFanMinRPMOverride addon instead of the Enhance_NV_Thermal_Characteristics_1.1.bin. Now that I have heard the fan running at new minimum, 2100, I don't think the noise is intolerable. My question is can I load the Enhance_NV_Thermal_Characteristics_1.1.bin addon also? Are these two addons compatible with each other? Is there any way to take the addons out?
Another question that I have is about this thermal fix. As long as the fan runs at the minimum I can see where either of these will solve the problem. However, setting the minimum will not make the NAS run cooler if it is at elevated temperatures. It seems to me that the fan ramp up would need to be increased at temperatures higher than the minimum also. Is this what the Enhance_NV_Thermal_Characteristics_1.1.bin change does?
I have had my ReadyNAS NV+ for about three months now. I have been very satisfied with the product. This temperature item is relatively minor. Thank you for addressing it as you have done. I would like to see fans that meet the cooling specs added to a fan compatibility list. - yoh-dahGuide

If you have the EnableFanMinRPMOverride, you should be fine as the other add-on basically does the same thing but more automatically (you don't have to specify 2100). The only difference is that if you ever did a factory default, you would need to re-install the EnableFanMinRPMOverride add-on whereas you don't with the other one.Another question that I have is about this thermal fix. Fan speed will automatically increase with rising temperature. What the add-on does is to make sure at idle, the PSU is kept cool.I have had my ReadyNAS NV+ for about three months now. Thanks for the feedback. - minibeefcakeAspirantI tried the reversing fan orientation method for this. As soon as I turn the unit back on, they fan revs up to 2700-2800 and stays there. HDD temp went up 2-3C.
After 2 hours or so, the fan speed never went down even after the HDDs were spun down for a long time.
So in the end I put the fan back into factory setting (blowing out) and it now it's back at 1800 rpm and silent...
I think I will try to take my chances with this setup for now since having the fan going that high rev all the time is a bother to me noise wise - Syndil1AspirantJust came back from troubleshooting a client's NAS... Over the past 3 days it has been shutting itself off. Have to unplug/replug the power cable to get it come back on, and even then it won't stay on long enough to re-sync the drives.
Wish I had known this info sooner. - SigwolfAspirant

You can use the EnableFanMinRPMOverride add-on from the Wiki Add-on page. This is mentioned in the PSU Service Action announcement - http://www.infrant.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10259 - SigwolfAspirant

Just as it was mentioned on this forum from Infrant staff that an updated patch that included upgraded NV units was forthcoming. Apparently that is no longer the case. I am very familiar with the PSU Service Action announcement and have been following it very closely. I am very aware that I had the privelege of paying extra to "upgrade" my NV with a power supply of questionable reliability. If the solutions are equivalent, then why was the patch released for the NV+ units in the first place? Why not just use the EnableFanMinRPMOverride add-on for all affected units with fanless PS?
Infrant issued a patch that would only install itself on NV+ units even though they were well aware that they had offered and sold the exact same power supply to many NV owners. I just would like to hear the whole story here...
