Service Action to Prevent PSU Failures in ReadyNAS NV/NV+
A Service Action notice has been posted in the Announcement forum to prevent ReadyNAS NV and NV+ systems from premature power supply failures at viewtopic.php?t=10259. If you own a NV or NV+ within the serial number range in the notice, please either download and install the add-on or perform the simple fan reversal procedure. We've seen a small percentage of our customers experiencing power supply failure and we want to avoid any downtime you may encounter due to an unnecessary RMA process.

- ovadAspirantI can't be certain it was the SP that failed, but even after applying the add-on update, we got some sort of hardware failure. Something (under the 3rd HD from the left) shorted out and the unit will no longer power on. However, the cord "sparks" when plugged in and the LED will illuminate for a split second. Does this sound like the PS failure or something else?
Also, I checked the S/N and this unit does fall within the range of affected units. - c3poNETGEAR Expert

Ovad, please see my reply to your post in boot section, thanks. - kevinngeorgiaAspirantEven after doing the add-on/ new firmware months ago looks like my PSU just died on my ReadyNAS NV. Hope they get support center back and running correctly looks like there is some email problem and I need to get a new one ASAP since the NV does the nightly backups for all my servers
Update: Just got an email from Support.. They needed my Invoice from Newegg so should have the RMA pretty soon. Got to give them credit where credit is due for good tech support
Kevin - GeneS1AspirantWill any harm be done if I do the Service Action and its already been done at the factory?
Judging by my system, there is no indication that it was ever done.
1)The serial number falls into the correct range.
2)The fan speed idles around 1600.
3)I can't find any settings to up the RPM speed.
Yet I just got this (new, not open box) NAS NV+ 2 weeks ago from Newegg, and it has been sold out multiple times before, so this should be from a new stock.
It just seems odd that 4 months after "New ReadyNAS NV+ that will get into the field will be shipped with 2100 min RPM." I end up with one?? - yoh-dahGuide

You may have received something that's been in the stock pipeline from a distributor that NewEgg uses. It doesn't hurt to apply the patch even if it was applied before, but yours does not have the patch already installed. - xantheinAspirantAll,
Like everyone, I received the service action relating to the fan failure. I checked my serial number, it fell in the range and then I completely forgot about it. Sure enough, last week the circuit breaker for my wall sockets popped, accompanied by a nasty electrical smell from the cupboard containing my NV.
I sent it off via the RMA process and today (to my surprise) received a shiny new Netgear-branded NV+ in the post. The serial number of this device is outside the range indicated in the service action and the fan speed sits around 2300-2500 RPM - I've certainly not seen it as low as 1600.
So - in a nutshell, is there anything further I need to do? Do I need to install any addons or reverse fans to prevent any further PSUs from croaking on me?
Thanks in advance, and thanks to those who managed to get that RMA through in such a short time! - musicfanAspirantThanks for the great tips. I have an NV+ where I had to reverse the fan or download to keep fan idle at 2100 rpm. I did both to make the PS cooler but recently got a message that drive 3 was too hot.
Removing the dust filter lowered my drive temp about 15% in drive 3 and about 7% in the outer ones. Let's hope that's the end of the heat problem and I don't have to leave the front door open.
It's too bad we cannot monitor the temp of the PS. Perhaps a future build?
Would another possible solution to our heat problem be to place an aluminum notebook cooling platform (the kind with fans) underneath an Infrant? Has anyone done that and measured temps? - Retired_MemberSo when the NV power supply warning came out I checked out the forum and then I did a fan reversal on my NV. The fans have been running about 2100 RPM or so since the update (May-ish time frame). Today I go down the basement after a recent upgrade (added a gig-switch) and the whole basement smells. At first I thought it was the switch but it is the NV and the bottom is hot.
RAIDAR says front view temp around 30C/86F which does not seem crazy with 4 x 500GB. The filter was clean but I blew it out anyway. The NV sits on a shelf that is not crowded.
The whole box smells fried circuit board and I get the bad feeling like it going to go at any time. I am just not feeling too go about the whole thing. What do I do? What is my course of action :?:
-kiddude - howser56AspirantSeems that I've just joined the fried PSU club. I bought my NV+ in Feb of this year but can't locate the receipt as yet. Do I absolutely need it to arrange an RMA?
- GrievousAspirantYou should call support, their contact information is in my signature.
