Spinpoint F4 HD204UI 2TB 5400 RPM working good so far
There was a recent deal at NewEgg on the SAMSUNG Spinpoint F4 HD204UI 2TB 5400 RPM 32MB drives, so I decided to risk it as opposed to the other WD & Seagate 2tb drives. I installed them, upgraded the ReadyNAS firmware then did a factory reset. Disk 4 took most of an evening to resync, but finally finished. So far it's been running fine as I've been copying data off my old NV+ on to the new Ultra 4.
The Ultra 4 is sitting in the bottom of my gun safe, so low heat is rather important to me and I thought a 5400 would be a better bet. So far I haven't seen any Temp1 above 140f or so and the HD's are usually at or under 100f, never seen one above 108f. I was worrried that the enclosed fireproof safe would end up retaining too much heat, but it's been 3 days now with no problems. When I have the safe open the drives are very quiet, not surprisingly closed you can't hear a thing at all.
Will try and post later when I see how they hold up.

- soulseekerAspirantI guess it would make sense if we could verify if running samsung disks running in a readynas are also affected by this problem. I also wonder if ahci/ncq is used by the nas-os or if they run in ide. I didn't notice any data-loss in the past few weeks, so currently I don't like the idea to patch my hds.
Did somebody already run the patch? How about the x-raid afterwards? All data still there or wiped off? - airsAspirantI used this - http://www.lowfps.com/creating-a-bootab ... humb-drive ....to create a USB boot stick.
I then put the firmware fix exe from samsung's site on the usb drive and shut down the computer.
Then before starting the computer, I detached all my sata devices and connected the first of my HD204UI disks,
Then I booted up and changed my bios so that it would boot from the USB drive first.
Once the computer booted, it dropped me at a C:\> command prompt and I just executed the Samsung exe. - Mutley1AspirantHi eco001
Thanks for pointing out I have downloaded the wrong file. I'm extremely tired these days, all help welcome as I will probably be making mistakes.
Wasn't sure about the diks/format thing. Didn't really think too hard about it, figured it'd need to be in a format dos would read. But maybe it doesn't need to be formatted to run patch with dos. I guess we'll find out if we have to.
Does anyone know if the Duo is running on IDE or not?
Jedis, need some force here it you've got it about this IDE thing. Would stop this problem straight away.
airs and eco001, as you two seem on the ball with this Samsung bug/patch thing, do you think you can suss how to patch up correctly? And explain all?
I've got an xp machine to execute this patch, but I'm a mac user. So not familiar any more with such tech as dos anymore. Was better at it when I was 13 on an old Atari XL I believe.

I've just checked the file I'd downloaded, and it was an .exe file indeed. If it aint gone already, my brains going.. - mattseattleAspirantGlad to see an updated firmware has been released. My issue is I only have an iMac and unable to apply the firmware. Ugh! ;)
- eco001AspirantWow that was fast, but I haven't made a DOS boot disk in forever. lol I suppose a dos boot flash drive would be the way to go. Anyone know if I could get the patch to find the drive in an eSATA docking station in that environment? Otherwise, I'll hafta play musical SATA ports.

You shouldn't have to format it beforehand, but maybe afterwards. I would definitely assume, tho, that the drive gets wiped.Mutley wrote: I've just downloaded the patch, which is a text file. How does one run it in dos etc..?
You must have grabbed the wrong file. It should be an executable.Samsung Support wrote: If identify commmand is issued from host during NCQ write command in the condition of
PC not external , write condition is unstable. So It can make the loss of written data.
NCQ is supported in ACHI only, so IDE mode is definitely not affected by this bug. I would consider ignoring the problem if I could verify the ReadyNAS is in IDE mode and not liable to change in the future. - Mutley1AspirantNice one airs
Can someone figure out how best to implement this with disks already in Duo?

About right?
I've just had a look at the instructions. Anyone got any instruction for this procedure? I'm not that great with dos these days. A step by step would be fantastic is someone could put one up.

mutley - airsAspirantPatch has been released! Get it here:
http://www.samsung.com/global/business/hdd/faqView.do?b2b_bbs_msg_id=386 - Mutley1AspirantWell done People.
Try to keep us up to date. I can't chip in at the minute, but I'm monitoring the thread with anticipation and dread. But maybe we'll win through.
mutley - mattseattleAspirantI wonder if there is anyone that can chime in and let us know if the ReadyNAS is running in ACHI or IDE mode?
- eco001AspirantYeah, the errors are silent. One person claimed the write buffer gets cleared before the data is finished being written to the disk. One tester said the error occurred even with write caching disabled, but that's not confirmed. It seems fairly solid tho, that it's an ACHI issue so I'm hoping were running in IDE mode.
