Upgrade from NV+ to Pro 4 (RNDP4000)

To whom it may concern,

I have an existing ReadyNAS NV+ (Sparc machine) that has served me well for about 4 years. However, when we moved, proximity to the ocean air in Hawaii has begun to take its toll, and I'm looking at a replacement.

However, before I buy, I've got a few questions:

1. Is it possible to remove the drives from the existing ReadyNAS NV+ and put them into the Pro 4? While I know that they will only operate as standard SATA 3Gbps drives, I'm OK with that. I just want to make the transition as seamless as possible (i.e. moving the data, configuration and permissions from one unit to the other).

2. Is it possible to move the configuration from the existing NV+ to the new Pro 4? Any utility that will help in this? I don't relish the thought of rebuilding the configuration (see comment above).

3. Is the finish on the Pro 4 any better than on the old NV+ The corrosion on the existing NV+ is located wherever drill holes have been made in the cutting of the metal frame and/or front door (mostly for ventilation). The rest of the unit is fine. It appears that only these areas are being affected, and that had they been finished like the rest of the exterior, then they wouldn't have corroded. While humidity here is higher than in some locations, it is NOT condensing, and none of my other office electronics (PCs, router, printer, etc.) are showing similar issues. I have opened and inspected the interior (to the limits of warranty), and while the corrosion is limited to the case, it is only a matter of time before it works it's way to the actual electronics in the next couple years. I'm curious to see if there's anything that might be done to eliminate this issue (like a better finish, etc.)

4. I really want to have a cloud-based backup of my local storage. I've looked at and tested Vault, but quickly discovered that the performance of my Sparc machine was significantly impacted. Additionally, as you can imagine, we have LOTS of fantastic pictures and videos that we want to back up, but as we are a very small business, we can't afford $3K for 1TB of cloud storage capacity from Vault. To that effect, I've been looking at Egnyte, which is offering 1TB of storage for roughly $540 a year (prepaid), and which seems to be natively supported on the Pro 4. Are there any other commercial backup services that are supported by the Pro 4, or is Egnyte the only other option to Vault?

Thanks in advance! As a former Nortel employee, I've been a Netgear fan since the Bay networking days, and look forward to hearing from you.

    1) No. Different RAID format: http://www.readynas.com/kb/faq/boot/how_do_i_migrate_disks_over_from_an_existing_readynas_to_another

You'll need to transfer the data e.g. across your network

    2) Not really, the OS is quite different too. Best to manually configure the Pro.

    3) You can see what it looks like in the hardware manual: http://www.readynas.com/docs

Also at http://www.netgear.com/business/products/storage/readyNAS-profam/RNDP4410.aspx (under Learn More you can see a link to a hi-res image)

    4) Vault and Egnyte are the only supported solutions.
  • I can't help but think the humidity will also get to the other devices, maybe not the cases, but the connections as well. If you had a space where you could put a de-humidifier to pull the moisture out of the air it would help. In S. Georgia, the humidity is also normally very bad, and anything exposed to the air, even if not to the weather, will eventually show the effects. Unlike Hawaii, most of our living and working spaces are air conditioned. In the paper mill where I retired from as an Accountant the humidity is even worse in the mill because of the process, all the control rooms are climate controlled, not because of the people, but because of all the electronic control equipment.
  • Ugh!

    This means I need to:

    1. Buy new hard drives for the new unit.
    2. Manually configure all of the existing configuration (shares, users, services, etc.).
    3. Do a MASSIVE data transfer from one unit to the other through the LAN.
    4. Purchase a de-humidifier (as what I saw in the hardware manuals looks absolutely no different from my existing NV+).

If I add it all up, we're talking $650 for the Pro 4, $320 for (4) 500 MB drives, $150 for the dehumidifier and $500 for 1TB of cloud storage. That's almost $1,650 and probably 3 days of configuration and data transfer.

    :(
  • You should use 3x1TB and make sure you don't use FTP to transfer/copy files where the date is crucial, because FTP usually resets the date.

FTP is not a backup protocol. Using NFS and Rsync is the way to go.
  • I never looked at it this way....so if it is not called BP I can't use it ?

Well FTP and NFS aren't backup protocols but you can still use them. FTP is typically used for uploading to websites whilst NFS is often used with Linux clients. Now the ReadyNAS is a Linux device, so NFS and Rsync, native Linux protocols will work well for ReadyNAS to ReadyNAS backups. NFS much quicker for full backups and Rsync slow for full backups but a great option for incrementals.
  • i hope you should apply this 3x1TB if this not work then you have to apply all this again i hope it will work it is use able formula i have applied it to safe me from this problem days ago.. i hope it will work man just make a try of this,,,
  • Well. . .finally took the jump.

Bought the Pro 4 and 4x2TB HDDs (off the HCL, of course).

Configuration was actually quite easy. . .no more than 20 min. with standard user shares.

Then I installed the egnyte OLC add-on for cloud backup/share purposes. Did not go smoothly. 2 Hours on tech support, and the guy finally told me he couldn't help me any further because I wouldn't let him SSH into the box. Jeez. I'm not voiding the warranty 1 day in. I did manage to figure this out on my own, however. A complete uninstall of the add-on, followed by a manual removal of the share, and then a reset let me start over.

However, since I'm trying to get the most out of this, and I want EVERYTHING backed up to the cloud, I'm moving my media onto the Shared folder in the ELC share. Unfortunately, I can't seem to set the readyDLNA service to use a folder inside the ELC share. Has anyone else run into this?
