WD RED WD30EFRX not supported in the ReadyNAS 516?
Why on earth are the 1 and 2 TB versions of the RED supported, but not the 3 TB? The 3TB runs in the Pro 6, what makes them unstable in the 516?
Thanks.Peet

- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserDrives are not on the HCL for two reasons.
(a) They are not compatible
(b) Netgear hasn't tested them
Unfortunately, Netgear doesn't provide a list of drives that are known not to work.
The RN 516 is brand new, I am thinking that the disk testing is not complete. Though IMO Netgear made a mistake by not testing the 3 TB version first. - kossbossGuideIt just takes a while to get all the sets of disks tested. QA goes through them and tests them out. Then marketing or whoever has control of the websites has to update the site etc. The disks have to be tested in lots of different ways before we claim them as compatible. Let me assure you though, lots of disks are always being tested, and the compatibility list will grow.
- peet1GuideNice to see a netgear employee reply. Thanks.
Is there any traction to put out more information as you're testing? i.e. WD30EFRX is in testing, but has not failed testing? As well as providing a list of known FAILED drives?
This would be a great service to the community and not not be releasing any sort of private info or company secrets.
Thanks.Peet - ihartleyTutorOr perhaps Netgear could post reasons why ANY drive that meets the relevant standards isn't compatible... I don't remember any MOBO coming with a HCL.
Isn't that what standards are for???? Let's face it, it's impossible for any company to test every drive/size/firmware combination. They would better spend their time documenting incompatibilities they know about instead of hiding them! - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredOther brands have compatibility lists too. Not all HDDs are suitable for use in RAID arrays. Disk manufacturers have said as such. WD doesn't support using their Green disks in NAS models with more than two drive bays
- WoodzzterAspirantAs mentioned above this is most likely a RAID / file system issue more than an incompatibility with the MB and the HDD itself
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredI think most likely the WD30EFRX hasn't been tested yet or if testing has commenced it hasn't finished yet.
NetGear probably focused their initial drive qualification on the drives they chose to ship in the semi-populated or fully-populated units they sell. - GovnahAspirant+1... I will receive my 516 tomorrow and I have 5 WD Red 3TB as mentioned here. I just assumed they would be compatible since the 1 and 2TB are on the HCL. Hope NTGR update the 516 HCL soon.
- Maxime000AspirantIt seems the web page hasn't been updated since this file has the WD30EFRX listed as compatible:

Thanks for that...I have my RN516 up and running with 5 WD RED 3TB and no issues.
