Root Access Denied with SSH Enabled
I am trying to get Crashpan running on my Ultra 4. To do this I need Root access via SSH with PuTTY. I have installed EnableRootSSH but when I log in as Root with my normal Admin password I get an access denied message, I have also tried the default 'netgear1' but get the same access denied.
I have tried reinstalling EnableRootSSH, using ToggleSSH to disable it and re-enable it but every time I get the same result. I am also setting up an new NV+2 and have been able to get SSH root access on it, so the problem seems to be with my Ultra rather than with my proceedure
Any help would be appreciated

- siignaNETGEAR Employee RetiredSystem Logs > Download all Logs. Check the boot_info.log. Last line should be SSH. 0 means disabled, 1 means ToggleSSH (which requires generated password), a large number (actually a unix timestamp) means that RootSSH was successful.
You did reboot after the add-on install, right? EnableRootSSH requires a reboot to enable. - cmcloughlinAspirantHI Siigna
Thanks for the quick reply. I doenloaded the logs and the ssh line is ssh: 1355159945. Yes I did reboot and when I try to log in with PuTTY I get the login prompt, enter root, get the password prompt but when I enter my admin/frontview password I get Access Denied. This passwrord was the admin password when I installed EnableRootSSH (earlier today) - chirpaLuminaryYou can re-install the add-on again, which would copy admins password to root.
- cmcloughlinAspirantThanks. Unfortunately still no luck. I got the following notification email (again) "Successfully enabled root SSH access. The root password is now the same as your admin password." However when I log in as root with the admin password I get access denied.
- siignaNETGEAR Employee RetiredDo a config backup (just users and groups is fine). Edit your /etc/shadow file in the zip to change the root password manually. Restore your new zip file and you should be in.
root:$1$S9WIKn4G$.zqHM7UWnYxSshqE4XJ321:15684:0:99999:7:::
Replace your "root" user line with that, should set your root password to "netgear1". After the restore the NAS will probably want you to restart, but you shouldn't have to.
It's a crude trick, but should work. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredWhen zipping up the config backup again zip up the "etc" folder. The config backup will restore to /
If you zipped up _READYNAS_CONFIG it would restore to /_READYNAS_CONFIG/ which is wrong. - siignaNETGEAR Employee RetiredGood point, I'm used to working with archive managers than let me edit directly within the archive. ;)
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredWhich archive managers do you recommend for Windows, Mac etc.?
- siignaNETGEAR Employee RetiredNot to derail the topic ;), but I haven't found a GUI one I like on OS X, yet, I usually do things through the command line. Same on Linux. On the rare occasion I use a Windows box 7-zip is my go to.
- cmcloughlinAspirantThanks siigna & mdgm
I'm not sure of the implications of mdgm's post but here's what I've done - I backed up Users and groups, then opened the zip file in 7-Zip. I double clicked the /etc/shadow file to open it in Notepad (I can't get it to open in Notepad++ unless I extract the file and after mdgm's post I was trying to avoid doing that) and replaced the root: line as far as the 3 colons - Notepad doesn't separate the lines well.
I then saved and closed shadow, closed 7-Zip and restored the backup. The readyNAS wanted to reboot so I let it. When it rebooted I did another backup and checked that the line had indeed replaced. I also extracted shadow file to my desktop and checked it in Notepad++. Everything looks OK, the root line is excatly the same as the one siigna gave me.
Unfortunately still getting Access Denied when I try to log in as root
