Can I upgrade to a newer version of an NV+?
Hi,
After many years, it looks like my ReadyNAS NV+ v1 has bit the dust. Since I have 4-500 GB drives of data on it, I was wondering if I could upgrade to another version of the NV+ line, say v2. I know I can't use the data on the drivers in a current ReadyNAS, but I'm not sure about the different versions of the NV+. I'm hoping I have that flexibility.
Can I do it?
Thanks....Mike

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredThe NV+ v2 uses a different RAID format, so no.
If you do get e.g. a 314, our support should be able to help you recover your data, but you would need:
1. One disk (not from your array) to put in the ReadyNAS
2. Somewhere to backup the data to
3. Follow instructions and not put your disks from your NV+ into the ReadyNAS till told to by support
4. After backing up the data, do a factory reset then restore data from backup. - ScuseMe1AspirantThank you very much for the quick reply mdgm!
It very strange - my NV+ has been happily running 24x7 for several years, but this new error - Kernel Panic - has got me real concerned that something, probably fatal, is occurring with my NV+. Since I can't get in using Raidar, I can't see the system logs to find out what's really happening. The unit's been brilliant for such a long time that I can't imagine being without it.
Last night I did a memory test from the boot menu, but that came out ok.
I did a Skip Volume Check boot, but after a few minutes, another Kernel Panic.
I'd like to do a Full Volume Test, but that choice doesn't show up in the boot menu.
Oh well, I'll keep reading.
Mike - vandermerweMasterIt's possible the Nas is ok and you have a disk problem
Power off.
Remove each disk in turn and test it using vendor tools on a PC. - ScuseMe1Aspirant

I took each disk out, numbered it, and I'm now running them against Seatools. 3 of the drives (2 thru 4) are Samsung Hd501LJ. The 4th, which runs in the Drive 1 spot, is a 1 tb Seagate Barracuda 7200.1 . 2 of the 3 Samsung have passed the Long Generic test (non destructive) while the third is running now. Since I didn't have much on my NV+, if I'd be a bettin' man, I'd take the Barracuda as the one with the problems. If all the drives pass without failing, then it could be the power supply (of which there are many for sale on Ebay and Amazon). But I'm really hoping it's the A drive Barracuda.
Thanks for the reply.
Michael - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserYou can try powering down the system, and booting up without the barracuda. The volume won't be redundant. If you change anything (files or config) you'd need to hot-insert the barracuda when done - which will resync it to the RAID array. Otherwise, power down again, insert the barracuda, and reboot.
- ScuseMe1AspirantStephenB,
That's something I can do before I blow my brains out (figuratively).
'The Seatools running under Win 7 recognize and pass as ok drives 2-3-4 (500 GB Samsungs), but drive ! (the Barracuda), SeaTools won't recognize at all thru my Thermaltake 2-slot external bay. I cab hear the drive spinning up, but SeaTools - no matter how many times I refresh it - never sees it. So your suggestion sounds good.
I shall return with results.
Thanks.
Michael Ferrari - ScuseMe1AspirantStephenB,
The NV+ - without the Barracuda - is now going thru a filesystem check. If the NV+ successfully boots, and I then shut it down & out in the Barracuda, what should I expect to see? The Kernal Panic again? If so, that proves the Barracuda is bad.
I do have the matching Samsung 500GB drive to the other 3. Could I use that in Slot1, bringing me back to 4-500GB drives? I've always upgraded the NV+, but never downgraded it.
Thanks to everyone for your technical help. My question really started withe me junking the NV+ and buying a working used one. If it turns out it's that darn Barracuda, then I'll really have egg on my face :)
Michael Ferrari - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserIf it boots w/o the Barracuda, I'd just replace that drive. One reason for that is that SeaTools isn't finding the drive at all.
You should be able to hot-insert the replacement samsung into slot 1. The NV+ should detect the drive, and start a RAID resync (formating the newly added drive, and rebuilding the data volume from the other three disks). - ScuseMe1AspirantDUP.
- ScuseMe1AspirantThanks StephenP,
With the prices down on 1 & 2 TB drives, I may start expanding again. But the main thing is that I have my music back (I have a 1 TB Passport that I had the NV+ using, but I'm not sure when the hardware hit occurred, so I'm not quite sure of the backup either. I guess it's time foe TWO redundant backups just for peace of mind.
