can't copy files to readynas with new 6TB drive
Hi there
I recently removed my 2x3TB drives from my ReadyNAS NV+ v2 and replaced them with one WD RED 6TB 3.5" SATA 6GB/s 64MB Hard Drive. After performing the necessary factory reboot in the standard X-RAID2 mode everything seemed to be running fine, the drive was recognised etc. However now I am trying to add everything I backed up from the old drives back onto the NAS I get the following network errors. These came from attempting to copy over a 6.49GB folder containing AVI videos.
After the copying gets about half way on a windows machine connected with a gigabit connection:
There is a problem accessing \\readynas\media
Make sure you are connected to the network and try again.
Clicking "Try Again" merely refreshes the pop up. Clicking "Skip" closes the pop up window and gives the impression the process of copying over the file is to be continued, until after a few minutes the green process bar turns red, followed by the network error a few more minutes later. The last option is to click "Cancel". The readynas remains functional and some of the files have copied. If, however i try to copy just copy over just one movie file the transfer goes smoothy. So the problem seems to be when trying to copy folders containing files.
Attemtping a copy of a 8.58GB folder on a gigabit connected mac running OSX:
The copy got as far as 576.8MB then became inactive. A few minutes later an error appears in finer:
The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “XXXXXXXX” can’t be read or written.
(Error code -36)
Unlike when copying from windows, the NAS freezes up and can only be reset by switching it off from the plug.
On the same mac but with wireless connection the same folder copied over smoothly.
So far I've attempted to perform a factory reboot of the device, again in the same X-RAID2 mode. I have also rebooted it to perform in raid 0, in this setting the NAS would freeze up instantly when attempting a copy. I have also tried switching the auto scan setting to off in ReadyDLNA.
So is it safe to assume that this issue is related to the gigabit connection? Has anybody else tried this drive on a readynas unit? Are there any suggestions for a fix (if there is one?)?
If there is no fix and the readynas unit just can't support a 6tb drive, what should I do? I have about 4tb of data to be put back on, although this would be tedious compared to letting the gigabit connection move everything over night, it would be possible.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated
Thanks, Matt

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredPossibly a bad Cat5e cable
- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserWell, it seems to be working ok now, but wasn't before. Two things changed - restarting the NAS and eliminating your router/switches/cables.
If the problem returns when you connect the NAS back up to the router, then that suggests you have an underlying network problem - possibly a cable, as mdgm suggests.
It's not clear what it means if the problem doesn't return when you reconnect it normally. Though I'd take an "if it's not broke then don't fix it" view in that case myself.
Backups of course are a very good idea given that you are off the HCL using a very new drive model. - MattyP1990AspirantOkay, let's hope its that - I'll change the cat5e cable and try connecting it the router again tomorrow, will update how it goes. Tonight I'll attempt to copy over a larger amount of data, say 1TB.
Well, at least the ReadyNAS NV+ v2 seems to support this drive, right? Hopefully one day the WD RED 6TB will be added to the HCL? After all, for the size of the drive it seems a pretty reasonable price so I could imagine them becoming pretty popular. - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserThere is a lot of interest, hopefully it will added the HCL to more NAS soon. 4 TB is still the cheapest per TB (~$40), but the 6 TB is still reasonable.

I may be totally out of date here but, as far as I understand, the 6TB WD Red HD is not on Netgear's hardware compatibility list for your ReadyNAS NV+ v2 but the 4TB WD RED (WD40EFRX) HD is: - http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/20641/~/hardware-compatibility-list-hard-disks-
And so, I don't believe that Netgear or anybody else can guarantee that your 6TB HD will work with your legacy NV+ v2.
Maybe one of the senior forum members can shed more light on this.

I was excited to see these 4 TB WD RED drives on the HCL.
I am worried that every other place I look at refers to the max. capacity of the Ready NAS NV+ v2 as 12TB.- www.netgear.es/images/ReadyNAS_Duov2_NVv2_DS_25Oct1172-8090.pdf
- www.netgear.cz/service-provider/products/storage/residential-soho/RND4000.aspx#two
Can I be safe spending on 4 of these Reds to make 16TB? - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredBest to backup your data, do a factory default with the new drives in place and restore your data from backup.
Also make sure you have a v2 (runs RAIDiator 5.3.x) not a v1 (runs RAIDiator 4.1.x and earlier). The v1 does not support drives that have a larger capacity than 2TB
