Drive replacement issue in Pro Business

Dear Forum Members,

I have a Pro Business with 6x Seagate Constellation ES 2TB drives. I had noticed over the past two months a climbing error count on Disk 3, with the drive finally failing the SMART test today, so I replaced it with a spare of the exact same model. Upon replacement of the drive, the log said the new drive is DEAD, and navigating to Status->Health shows the drive with a flashing yellow indicator and marked "Dead". Navigating to Volume Settings, under the RAID Settings tab, shows a grey indicator and a blank line after "Ch 3". The front panel on the ReadyNAS shows a solid blue box with the "3" in it just like normal, and I'm getting updated messages in the log regarding the data volume being rebuilt using the new drive, so it *appears* to be working. In addition, RAIDar shows green dots for all six drives, with a yellow dot for the volume (presumably due to the fact that the volume isn't rebuilt yet).

What gives? Why doesn't FrontView show the drive as healthy when it appears to be rebuilding and utilizing it?

H.

  • BTW, I bought seven of these very expensive drives last Spring, and this is my third failure. I love the long warranty but I have no idea how they get a 1.2M hour MTBF - these things are pieces of crap. I had replaced the 500G version of the same drive in my Pro and had about 3 failures in two years, which still seems excessive.

I got screwed pretty hard by WD back in the 1990s, but I think my next upgrade isn't going to be Seagate.

Try clearing your web browser cache (e.g. Temporary Internet Files in Internet Explorer).

It could be a bad batch of drives, poor handling by courier etc. NetGear does extensively test drives before approving them.

If wanting to try a different brand, you might want to try Hitachi drives from the Hard Disk HCL next time.
  • I cleared the cache, same displays. What I'm trying to figure out is, if the drive is "Dead", why does it display as OK on the front panel and in RAIDar, and why does the log say it's being used in a rebuild?

P.S. The Seagates I bought (and that are failing) are the Constellation ST32000644NS, right off the HCL... :(

Download your logs (Status > Logs > Download all logs) and take a look at diagnostics.log. What does it show for the disk there?

You might want to contact tech support (http://www.readynas.com/support) and seek an expert opinion from them.
  • Here is the total contents of diagnostics.log (S/Ns redacted):

I also tried removing and re-inserting the drive, and the displays got weirder - the health indicator showed the drive still in and "Dead", RAIDar showed "yellow", and the log reflected the removal. When I replaced it, RAIDar showed "Green", the health indicator still said "Dead", and the logs did not reflect the re-insertion. My main issue here is the discrepancies between the different indicators.

  • I just obtained a second replacement drive and inserted it, and am getting precisely the same symptoms. The log says the drive was inserted, and then the log says the drive will be used for rebuild, but all the other displays in front view say the drive is dead, and the front panel shows the drive with a square around it like normal, but simply says "Volume C Degraded." So once again, I have no indicator whatsoever that there is a good drive in the slot and that anything is happening with it.

This is epically frustrating. I seem to remember rebuilds previously (6 months or so ago) giving useful displays letting me know the drive was good and being rebuilt. I took the other replacement and put it in a USB enclosure and examined it and it had three partitions on it, all "healthy", so the ReadyNAS had at least partitioned it.

WTF is going on and how can I confirm that there's either something wrong or that everything's OK? What *should* I be seeing?

  • Adding insult to injury, as I was sitting here pondering all this stuff, the NAS suddenly stopped communicating with any useful protocol. I can ping it, but SSH, HTTP/S, AFP and CIFS all are refused. The NAS has vanished. Front panel looks normal, there's traffic on the links, but it cannot be contacted.

    Help?

    H.
  • RAIDar can't see it anymore either. *grrrr*

But I CAN ping the IP address.

  • OK, I finally assumed it must have crashed for some reason, even though it was ping-able, and I tried the double-click-front-panel-button reboot, which did nothing, so I held down the front panel button (gritting my teeth, I hate killing a filesystem without graceful shutdown). I let it fully power down and then restarted it. It took forever to boot, but now the displays are as I'd expect - drive light blinking green in Frontview and marked "Resync".

    Very bad behavior, very confusing.
