Email addy req'd to install v5.3.5?
Can anyone please tell me WHY I MUST give the RAIDiator Installer an Email Address to install this F/W?
I can not get by this initial screen. Is there some 'pass-thru' but inactive, address I can use to complete the
NAS system install. I am on my 3d try to install/stabilize this F/W !
I do NOT wish for this NAS (or any of my NAS) to send ANY Email Alerts to me via my ISP.
This 'Lock' has been present since v5.3.2.
I am playing with a new Duo (V2) since 22MAR12. Still can NOT get this hdw to a point where it will BACKUP my Duo (V1).
I get the 'Alerts' feature. I will never use it! My Duo (V2) is on my private LAN, and, I will speak to it via RAIDar, or, Network Neighborhood.
I have NOT given up yet; but, I am getting close.............. :(

mdgm,
Thank you for this suggestion, however there is little chance I will try this. Even though, NOW, I can do this w/o concern about my 'warranty!' My V1 is out of warranty. I am adverse to most things *nix. I recall that my DUO-V1 is constructed of some form of Debian Linux. Fine. It is a 'SPARC' thing. Fine.
I never planned to ever 'speak' directly to the f/w. FrontView has been just fine for my needs.
Yes, I understand that both my NAS use various types of Linux. Fine. Netgear managed to sell me a product with internal sw/fw using an OS I know zero about. At this point in time, I believe most of the bugs I've read about for the past 25yrs have been run to ground. My DUO-V1 runs nicely, thank you! I do so like my 4yr old DUO-V1. Now, I just wish to backup my V1 to my DUO-V2. Nothing more. My games with my Intel FreeAgent 500MB drive never worked; even post formatting externally via ext2/3, and, all the helpful hints and suggestions on this forum. USB is just too slow. JMHO.
Happy to know that v5.3.5 (V2) now allows RSYNC. This is what I am getting ready to try; post a re-install of the v5.3.5 f/w yet again to my 'new' DUO-V2. - PapaBear1ApprenticeNASNoob, yes we may use the ReadyNAS differently, as I use my primary NAS as a small home server with virtually all of my data on the NAS. I went to this after looking for a solution of trying to find out which of three PC's a particular file was on. Knowing there was a better way I researched various solutions and bought my NV+ 5 years ago before Infrant was purchased by Netgear. Unlike many of the other home/small office solutions out there, you did not have to install a special program on the PC to access the data on the NAS, and there was no 'key' disk which held the OS, which meant that if you lost the primary drive, you still have major problems trying to recover. Nor did I think any of the the prevalent 1 drive NAS units was a real solution. Of course in those days, if you wanted a desktop ReadyNAS, there was only one, the only decision you had to make was how many drives you would buy with it.
Over the years I have managed to upgrade my original NV+ to an NVX and add a second NVX whose only purpose is to back up the primary every evening. The NV+ was rehomed to a very good friend and still going strong.
The alerts are a tool just as any other. If I get an alert, I usually see it on the LCD panel first and then either in my e-mail or RAIDiator. But this is because the PC I use the most is sitting near the NAS units, but there have been a few times when I got an alert on my laptop and came into the room where the NAS units are to check it out. If you have a remote unit, you are totally dependent on the alerts. - StephenBGuru - Experienced User
I agree different strokes. I think you don't really understand me though. I have the alerts set because I don't obsess over my NAS. When it tells me it has a problem, I fix it promptly. Otherwise, I just want to use it (as a file server!).NASNoob wrote: StephenB,
Yes, I do accept this situation. Perhaps I should review my 'Frontview' logs weekly(?) I don't see the need. I don't seem to focus on my NAS as much at you do. Yes, I do depend on my NAS; now that I have it. It is not my primary focus. I do file storage ONLY. Nothing more. Different strokes! - NASNoob11Aspirant
HERBIEO wrote: Hi NASNoob
i have 5.3.5 installed on my DUO v2 and i think it may be because under alert events: Disk Failure, Volume, Power, UPS, are all checked by default and you cant disable them, you can only disable Disk Full, Fan, Disk Temperature, but you can choose to send email alerts internal
HERBIEO,
Can you share what you believe 'send email alerts internal' really means? I can not find a good explanation of this choice.
Yes, I am aware of the locked, default alert types that can not be disabled. Been there, tried that.
If this choice leaves 'alerts' on the NAS proper, I am interested. - NASNoob11Aspirant

SetphenB,
My Bad. From my normal read of these forums, I seem to think most users are fully into BitTorrent and/or D* activities. I understand 'fix it promptly.' And, I follow this regimen also. I just do not care for the Netgear 'alert' overhead to use the device. I do not use this feature on my 4yr old DUO-V1.
I now chafe at being forced to use this feature on my DUO-V2 in order just to load the new DUO f/w. Plus, I do not like involving my ISP's mail system to enable the 'feature.' Certainly, my ISP may allow this perhaps. But, then, I have granted my new NAS external communication (beyond my router) for this feature to work.
I do not care for any 'background' communication (phone home, phone wherever). You are correct. Different strokes. - StephenBGuru - Experienced User
It means send the email using the internal SMTP server built into the DUO, instead of using an external SMTP server.NASNoob wrote: Can you share what you believe 'send email alerts internal' really means? I can not find a good explanation of this choice.
Either way an email is sent (though it might be blocked by your email host if you use the internal server). - NASNoob11Aspirant

StephenB,
Thank you. I sorta understand this, but, remain confused between the DUO's Internal SMTP server, and/or, an External (?) SMTP server. Clearly my bad. In any case, even this does not solve my issue with the 'alerts' logic I can NOT disable on my new DUO-V2 using f/w 5.3.5.
You also mention 'email host.' Again confusion!
Any email 'alert' my DUO-V2 might send, via Internal or External, must go out of my home via my router to my ISP for process back to my Inbox; unless I have missed something. I do not operate a home mail server. And, I see little advantage to muck with Mozilla/Thunderbird 13.0.1 to create a special 'Inbox' for any future DUO 'alert' emails. Besides, even to allow this DUO Alert logic to work, I still have to enter my very personal email credentials into Dashboard to even work. Perhaps other NG users do not have a security issue with this. I do! Let's agree this business in just my own privacy issue.
Therefore this DUO-V2 will show up in the forum Marketplace in due time. I may move to a pair of Ultra 2's, or, some other vendor. I will raise my original {alerts] issue in the RAIDiator 4.2.21 (x86) area after I spend some research time reading 'x86' related issues/concerns...........
I will, first, reset my DUO-V2 yet again and try to get it to a level that it operates only as a "backup" target for my DUO-V1. I believe I am tired of fighting with the DUO-V2's 'Dashboard' logic also. No harm, no foul! - StephenBGuru - Experienced User
Here is an explanation that may help: http://computer.howstuffworks.com/e-mai ... email3.htm.NASNoob wrote: I sorta understand this, but, remain confused between the DUO's Internal SMTP server, and/or, an External (?) SMTP server.
Correct. Using the internal SMTP server in the Duo v2 does not resolve your concerns. My reply was not meaning to persuade you otherwise; I fully expected that you would reach the conclusion it would not work for you. I only was trying to explain what the internal feature was.NASNoob wrote: In any case, even this does not solve my issue with the 'alerts' logic I can NOT disable on my new DUO-V2 using f/w 5.3.5...Any email 'alert' my DUO-V2 might send, via Internal or External, must go out of my home via my router to my ISP for process back to my Inbox; unless I have missed something.
Although the idea someone posted earlier of using a deliberately bad email address might possibly work, especially if your router also lets you block the SMTP service for the NAS IP address.
