Email addy req'd to install v5.3.5?
Can anyone please tell me WHY I MUST give the RAIDiator Installer an Email Address to install this F/W?
I can not get by this initial screen. Is there some 'pass-thru' but inactive, address I can use to complete the
NAS system install. I am on my 3d try to install/stabilize this F/W !
I do NOT wish for this NAS (or any of my NAS) to send ANY Email Alerts to me via my ISP.
This 'Lock' has been present since v5.3.2.
I am playing with a new Duo (V2) since 22MAR12. Still can NOT get this hdw to a point where it will BACKUP my Duo (V1).
I get the 'Alerts' feature. I will never use it! My Duo (V2) is on my private LAN, and, I will speak to it via RAIDar, or, Network Neighborhood.
I have NOT given up yet; but, I am getting close.............. :(

- HERBIEOAspirantHi NASNoob
i have 5.3.5 installed on my DUO v2 and i think it may be because under alert events: Disk Failure, Volume, Power, UPS, are all checked by default and you cant disable them, you can only disable Disk Full, Fan, Disk Temperature, but you can choose to send email alerts internal - StephenBGuru - Experienced User
I understand your desire, and agree that firmware installation should accommodate it.NASNoob wrote: I get the 'Alerts' feature. I will never use it! My Duo (V2) is on my private LAN, and, I will speak to it via RAIDar, or, Network Neighborhood.
But you are making a mistake. Getting immediate notification on disk failure is extremely important. There are many posts here from folks who have thousands of reallocated sectors, and never realized it because they hadn't configured the alerts. Usually we lose data. - NASNoob11Aspirant@HERBEIO,
Yes sir. I have noticed this 'default' behavior since v5.3.2. Waiting for a way to defeat this still.
@StephenB,
Thank you.
Per 'my mistake', let us just agree to disagree. Should I have a pending disk failure, either I can NOT view the NAS in Net Neighborhood, or, RAIDar would not see/display my NAS. I check my NAS monthly and print out my SMART results. I accept that EM drive platter failures fail (grow) over time. Still, my NAS is not the pinnacle of my LAN. It is my file storage/archival device. I fully expect that my EM drives will fail/crash over time. Yes, I am getting close to my 'worry-zone' because I have ~4 years of use from my current 500MB 'surveillance rated' pair of drives. I know that they are now hard to replace.
I do not live in the 'Want the biggest HD' club. I buy known reliable spares that live on the Netgear HCL; and, then I hope for the best.
I am just trying to get my new DUO-V2 up and running so I can FINALLY backup my old DUO-V1. Nothing more. The DUO-V2 is a frustrating beast! - HERBIEOAspirantdoes it not install if u use a fake email ?

Not exactly. If you have a pending drive failure, you should receive alerts if the e-mail alerts are set up. If you have a drive failure, you would also receive alerts, yet can still access the shares via Network Neighborhood and RAIDar would also be able to see the NAS would would on the display indicate the drive that had failed. Only if the array is degraded would your statement be true.
I can state for a fact that on sparc based (NV+) units with a two drive array (same as the Duo) with one dead drive you can still access the files, for I have done so. After replacing the failed drive while the unit is resynching the array, you can still access the files although response is slower. The above situation is also true for 4 drive arrays and x-86 units. - StephenBGuru - Experienced User
Yes. Usually you can still access the files with a failing disk. And RAIDAR/Radiator will show the drives as fully functional(green status) even if they have hundreds of reallocated sectors - at least that is the case on the V1 and X86 platforms. If the alerts are turned off, the only way you know a drive is going bad is by manually reviewing the logs or the SMART stats. In NASNoob's case that could take a full month. Personally I want to know right away, so I can pop in a spare before the array fails.PapaBear wrote: NASNoob wrote:

HERBIEO wrote: does it not install if u use a fake email ?
HERBIEO,
Well, yes it does. But, this is a bogus workaround to me. 25yrs ago I created a 'bogus' email addy of "me@home.com."
Sadly, today I have no idea whether this bogus addy may/may not be for real/active.
Back to my original point, I wish a way to disable this 'now' mandatory ARM firmware install 'feature.' I just do not wish to have my NAS sending emails to me out from my home and cluttering up my ISP email services. I do not wish for my NAS to be an Internet Citizen that communicates external of my home LAN in the background. - NASNoob11Aspirant

PapaBear,
I will defer to your experience. I have not yet had any trouble of this type from my Duo-V1. Yes, I accept your share of the if/when scenario. I have lived through many hard drive failures (single and RAID) in the past.
My DUO-V1 continues to operate 24/7, with its' rattly cooling fan. I did feed v4.1.8 my personal 'bogus' email address. Thankfully, 'Frontview (V1)' then allowed me to fully disable any/all Alerts permanently! :D
'Dashboard' does NOT allow such a choice. :x This is my point.
I do send my drives to 'sleep' after 2hrs of inactivity. I think they spend many hours sleeping. So, when I do ask for the NAS, I get to wait as the disks spin up. This is not a problem to me. Perhaps we just use our NAS differently?
Yes, I do expect 'my' failure may be a drive motor failure!!!
I will accept what you share. I have no experience with this. I understand you use and like 'alerts.' Fine. I have trouble with a piece of equipment on my LAN operating as a background email delivery object that requires connection to my external ISP.
Let's just agree that we have different views on personal Internet security. OK? - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredIf you are comfortable with SSH you can install the firmware update via that should you prefer not to use the Dashboard for some reason (though it is best to use the Dashboard).

StephenB,
Yes, I do accept this situation. Perhaps I should review my 'Frontview' logs weekly(?) I don't see the need. I don't seem to focus on my NAS as much at you do. Yes, I do depend on my NAS; now that I have it. It is not my primary focus. I do file storage ONLY. Nothing more. Different strokes!
Sadly, I do not yet have a stack of SPARE hard drives to 'pop' into my NAS yet. Yes, my trouble for sure.
Now, if I can get my DUO-V2 up and running; AND, get it to accept a backup from my DUO-V1, then I am better off than a perfect world with full spares for both my NAS. This will get PapaBear, mdgm, dbott67, and you off my case! :slap:
I have been searching the internet for the past 2 years for spare Seagate ST3500830SCE Barracuda DB35.3 series. When I do find them, they are all 'refurb' and very expensive. Ho-hum...... The hunt continues. ............ :)
