Gmail SMTP setup

I think Gmail requires TLS, which is currently not implemented in the ReadyNAS:

Thanks Dave. Well, that's a bummer. I guess we'll just wait and see what good surprises the council has for the new firmware...

My ISP isnt blocking port 25, so all I have to do to get alert emails to a gmail account is enter the email in one of the three alert contacts (under System->Alerts).
Not sure if that helps, but it works like a charm.

Why is it you need SMTP ?
Maybe because your ISP uses PPPOE?

Thanks Lichon, but I have tried port 25 and it worked before, when I had it set up with sbc. Still have them, but I rather just get this one working so I don't have to mess with this every time I change. I changed that port to the suggested gmail port on both the router and nas, but the box just will not sent any alerts out. I also took out the settings and just left my email on one of the contacts, but still nothing with or without the info.

I just rebooted the nas, but still nothing.

@Lichon: Gmail does not accept unauthenticated SMTP connections for relaying mail. Therefore jaime must use Gmail's TLS port (i.e. 587). The problem is that the NAS does not currently support using TLS.

If jaime were to send the NAS messages to his ISP (or any other e-mail account that will accept non-encrypted communication), it would work fine.

@Jaime: My suggestion would be this: If you ISP offers you a number of free e-mail accounts, I would create a new one called "NAS-alerts@your-isp.com" and forward those to your Gmail account. Even if your ISP only offers 1 e-mail address, you should still be able to forward any/all messages to your Gmail account.

My ISP setup an e-mail account for me when I first registered and they use it to send me my monthly invoice. Other than that, it's spammed to death. I setup a .forward file that sends everything to my own domain mail server:

Thanks Dave. That's what I used that account for, nothing but the alerts. Unfortunately they changed all the servers a while back and I never did check on that. I never really used that account and then when I went back to use it, it just didn't work anymore. I know I could call them and find out since I don't know what my user name or password is now. I do hope we can use the gmail later though...other than that you are right, the gmail account doesn't work with any port as far as I can tell.

In this viewtopic.php?f=18&t=20236&hilit=mod_tls thread chirpa confirms that mod_tls is installed for FTP. Maybe it can be used with the built-in mail server too.

Thanks Lichon, but even with this on there, I still can't get this email alert working, so I'm not going to dig a hole just yet...

Hi guys, well here I am again a year or two later trying to get this smtp alert working again. I already gave up on the gmail, but now that I have that password for my yahoo account I find that I can't add a second email address in the alert contacts. When I do, I click apply, but then the nas just deletes that second account? I know I can get my smtp and pop from the yahoo account and I have the port set at 25 and tried the other ports for the gmail as well, but I'm just not having any luck on here with the nas. I hope you guys can help me out. I know that worked a long time ago when I first got the nas, but since I found out I can't add a second alert email I thought there may be something else going on. I use evolution to check that email account just for this test and it works fine. I'm on firmware RAIDiator 4.1.4 [1.00a042].

Version 4.1.5-T74 (beta) supports TLS authentication for Gmail, Hotmail & others.

It's currently in 4th beta stage due for final release shortly. Feel free to try it:
