I can not connect to a password protected share from my Mac
I have a Netgear ReadyNAS NV+ with the very latest firmware:
Hostname: powers-nas
Model: ReadyNAS NV+ [X-RAID]
Serial: 23J39B7E000CF
Firmware: RAIDiator 4.1.7 [1.00a043]
Memory: 256 MB [2.5-3-3-7]
I am using Security Mode Share:
Share. Fit for home or small office. Select this option if you would like to restrict share access with the use of an optional share password.
I have 3 shares. 2 have no password, and the third (share name tracey) has a password. I've had this same configuration since I've had the NAS and I've never had any problems connecting to it from a Mac.
A few weeks ago, my Mac stopped being able to connect to the password protected share. When I try, I get the following error:
The operation can’t be completed because the original item for “tracey” can’t be found.
I have no problem connecting to that same share from another Mac in the house. There must be some system software difference between my Mac and the other Mac that is somehow incompatible with the NAS, but I have no idea what it is or how to fix it.
In the Finder, the password protected share shows up under CIFS but does NOT show up under AFS.
I searched for this error message, and I found that A LOT of people have posted about the same issue, but so far, there have been few/no answers. The few suggestions that were posted (get the latest NAS firmware), I have tried, and did not work.
Here is my Mac's information:
Model Name: MacBook Pro
Model Identifier: MacBookPro7,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.4 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2

Is there any solution to this problem?

- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserBut do you have CIFS enabled for each share?
- traceypowersAspirantI have CIFS enabled (I think...the configuration for this is ANYTHING but straightforward)
Before configuration, when I have the share listing displayed, the file icons for CIFS were red. When I click on the CIFS icon for each share, I can configure it. Before configuration, Default Access was set to Disabled. When I enable it for Read/write, the icon goes from red to black, but I'm not convinced it's actually set up correctly. The "Hosts allowed access" and the "Write-enabled users/groups" are greyed out, meaning I cannot configure them. The only thing that's configurable is "Read-only users/groups". Furthermore, when I configure CIFS, then return to the share listing, the AFP icon is now red, and when I click into the AFP configuration, I see that it's now disabled.
This makes me think that I actually don't know how to properly configure these protocols.
1. Why is the icon red?
2. How do you "turn on" AFP and CIFS?
3. What is the proper way to set the settings when I want the following access controls:
Anyone in group rt can read and write
Guest/others have no access
Why, when I select anything other than "Disabled" does it stop allowing me to choose the settings for Write-enabled users/groups? - traceypowersAspirantThis gets me further. Now, I can attempt to actually log in to the NAS, but now, I get the same problem I originally had when attempting to use any share with a password from Windows...and that is that I cannot log in to any share if it has a password set.
I now get an access denied error.
I applied the registry hack to fix this once before. I will check to see if some system update has un-done my registry hack. - traceypowersAspirantCorrection. Configuring CIFS gets me further on some shares, not others.
Share 1: What I want:
Group rt has R/W
Guest/other: No access
Share 2:
Group rt has R/W
Guest/other: Read only
Again, I'm certain I have some configuration wrong when I try to configure CIFS, because I do not understand why certain boxes are greyed out, disallowing me from setting the read/write access as I would like.
However, I get two different results when trying to connect.
Share 1: I get as far as the login screen. Type in username/password. Get an error saying that access is denied.
Share 2: Can't even find the share. - traceypowersAspirantI just checked. My Windows Registry does still have the hack mentioned here:
faq.php#Why_am_I_not_able_to_access_ReadyNAS_share_that_is_password_protected_with_Vista%3F - sphardy1ApprenticeI think you need to go back to basics.
Setup the shares with default settings, no access restrictions, and ensure you can mount them and fully access them from each account. Then, 1 step at a time, start making the access restrictions and ensure they actually implement what you require before making the next restriction.
This post might help with that access controls - traceypowersAspirantFirst off, these are not new shares.
I am trying to convert my NAS from Share mode to User mode.
These shares existed on the old security configuration. So, I have no idea what the "Default" is.
Are you suggesting that I just create brand new shares, then if they work, copy all the files from these old/broken shares to the new ones?
And, about the document you referred to about how to set up permissions, I've already read it. It helped some, but I'm still (obviously) having problems. - traceypowersAspirantI created a brand new share with default permissions.
CIFS and AFP are both enabled.
I cannot connect to it from windows. Same error as before. - traceypowersAspirantHere are more details of the error message:
"powers-nas" is not set up to establish a connection on port "File and printer sharing (SMB)" with this computer. - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserHave you tried turning your PC firewall/internet security suite off?
