I can not connect to a password protected share from my Mac
I have a Netgear ReadyNAS NV+ with the very latest firmware:
Hostname: powers-nas
Model: ReadyNAS NV+ [X-RAID]
Serial: 23J39B7E000CF
Firmware: RAIDiator 4.1.7 [1.00a043]
Memory: 256 MB [2.5-3-3-7]
I am using Security Mode Share:
Share. Fit for home or small office. Select this option if you would like to restrict share access with the use of an optional share password.
I have 3 shares. 2 have no password, and the third (share name tracey) has a password. I've had this same configuration since I've had the NAS and I've never had any problems connecting to it from a Mac.
A few weeks ago, my Mac stopped being able to connect to the password protected share. When I try, I get the following error:
The operation can’t be completed because the original item for “tracey” can’t be found.
I have no problem connecting to that same share from another Mac in the house. There must be some system software difference between my Mac and the other Mac that is somehow incompatible with the NAS, but I have no idea what it is or how to fix it.
In the Finder, the password protected share shows up under CIFS but does NOT show up under AFS.
I searched for this error message, and I found that A LOT of people have posted about the same issue, but so far, there have been few/no answers. The few suggestions that were posted (get the latest NAS firmware), I have tried, and did not work.
Here is my Mac's information:
Model Name: MacBook Pro
Model Identifier: MacBookPro7,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.4 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2

Is there any solution to this problem?

Could you try migrating to User Security Mode? See https://sphardy.com/web/readynas/how-to-migrate-to-user-security-mode/ - traceypowersAspirantI am finally attempting to reconfigure my NAS to User mode from Share mode, following the instructions above. On step 2, I attempted to create a user, but when I try to save the user, I get an error saying that the user already exists.
When I first got my NAS, I was tinkering around with both the User and Share security modes, before settling on Share. It appears, somehow, that the user I created back then is somehow stuck in the configuration, but is utterly invisible to the current admin user.
How can I delete this user?
I have made a backup of all the contents of the NAS. Is the state of the NAS corrupt, requiring me to wipe out the entire configuration and start over? - traceypowersAspirantOne more thing to note. The existing share was the same as the username I was trying to create. Is it not possible to have a user and a share with the same name?

Yes & no
User accounts each have a private home share - automatically created by the NAS - that is named the same as the account, so in that sense yes it is possible to have a user and shar with the same name
But it is due to this that you cannot 1. Create a user with the name of an existing share and 2. Not create a new share with the name of an existing user (as it already exists)
Net result - choose a different username or rename the share - traceypowersAspirantOkay. It appears as if I've answered my own question. The old share names cannot be the same as the new user names, because when you create a user, it will also create a share with the user's name. (This might be a good note to add to your migration documentation).
- traceypowersAspirantThe next problem I am having is that after converting from Share to User mode, I cannot connect to any shares from the PC. Ironically, I can connect via the Mac. The entire reason I migrated from Share to User security mode was because I could not connect from a Mac, but I could connect from a PC.
The error I get is:
"my-nas" is not set up to establish a connection on port "File and printer sharing (SMB)" with this computer.
I looked up that error message in these forums, and the only hit I got was this:
http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=65&t=41583&p=231438&hilit=+not+set+up+to+establish+a+connection+on+port+SMB#p231438
Which doesn't really apply to my situation.
First, I don't see how a user can make a mistake by creating a share name that is the same as a user name. When I accidentally attempted to do this, I was prevented from creating the user. Second, I am not setting up a system from scratch. I am following the instructions posted here on how to migrate from the old, unsupported Share security mode to the supported User security mode.
So, I have 3 shares:
media
richard
tracey
I have 3 users:
thp (in group rt)
rtp (in group rt)
guest (which I did not configure. It should have come set up already).
Both thp and rtp have a password associated with the user.
I have 1 group:
rt
thp and rtp have their primary group set to rt
media should be RW by group rt, and R by nogroup
the other shares should be RW by group rt and have no permissions for nogroup
I cannot connect from the PC to any share, regardless of whether it is public/guest accessible or not. I don't think this is a user/permissions configuration error.
Any ideas/documentation I could try?
I *really* just want to be able to connect to this device using either a PC or a Mac, and have some shares password protected. This certainly must be possible. - ewokNETGEAR ExpertHow are you trying to connect to a share with the Windows box? Try putting the NAS IP address and share name in Explorer's location bar like this:
\\$nas_ip\$sharename
and see if you get the same error message. What you're trying to set up is exactly what most Mac/PC users have done, and in most cases it should "just work". - traceypowersAspirantThat did not work. I got the same error message.

Do you have CIFS enabled for each share?traceypowers wrote: That did not work. I got the same error message. - traceypowersAspirantFYI, I can see the shares from a Chrome browser window, either by using
http://powers-nas/shares
or
http://192.168.1.2/shares
I can also load the admin interface (either way)
But From Explorer, I cannot get Windows to see the NAS.
The exact error message is:
Error code: 0x80070035
The network path was not found.
