Jumbo Frames Packet needs to be fragmented
I'm trying to set up jumbo frames. The Readynas NV is set to autonegotiation with an MTU size of 7936. I'm using a terminal and trying to access it to determine best MTU size for transmission. The highest I get is 1472. Anything over errors out and says Packet needs to be fragmented but DF set. The jumbo packet on my computer is set to 9014, I can lower it to 4088. Transferring files between this computer and another one on my network gives me about 80-85mb/sec. The ReadyNas is terribly slow. I'm using ping -f -l 1472 "ip address" to check speeds.

- grunnsatAspirantThat will be a problem with your switch, or the switch in you router. Not every switch or router supports jumbo packets.
- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserYes, it looks like the path between the NAS and the PC is limited to normal ethernet (1500 byte MTU).
For best performance on your existing network turn Jumbo Frames off everywhere. Or upgrade your routers and switches to support JF.
Of course all the newer ReadyNAS are faster than your NV, so if you are simply trying to get faster NAS speeds then you should consider upgrading the NAS. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredThere's also the possibility of a compatibility issue. You may find with a newer NAS that Jumbo Frames works fine where it doesn't with your NV.
You will certainly get a much bigger performance increase from getting a new ReadyNAS (even without Jumbo Frames) than getting Jumbo Frames to work with your NV. - hengy1TutorYou're absolutely right. A new NAS might work, might not. But this NAS has jumbo frames. Hopefully this doesn't meant that jumbo frames never worked correctly on the readynas nv. I do have a new netgear gs105 unmanaged switch between them. I am getting 80+ mb/sec between my main computer and another one on the same network which has a Dlink router in addition to the gs105 between them. So jumbo frames are indeed working correctly on the network.
- grunnsatAspirantThe data sheet of the GS105 does not mention the support of jumboframes, The GT108 (there is no GT105) does support jumboframes.
- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserTry doing the same ping test between your two PCs - that will tell you clearly if Jumbo Frames are supported by the switch. The performance impact of the fragmentation will vary between platforms. So the 80 MB number between 2 pc's is not really relevant.
But it is clearly better not to enable JF if your switches (and devices) don't support it. - hengy1TutorPerfect, now I've got some good info. I'll be replacing this switch with one that does support jumbo frames. Thanks. One question though. Transfer rate between 2 pcs with gigabit ports is 80+mb/sec. Why wouldn't I get the same from the Readynas NV? I guess the pcs aren't using jumbo for that speed. Curious.

Because its an old design and is just not fast enough. The system maxes out around 25 MB/s.hengy wrote: Why wouldn't I get the same from the Readynas NV?
Newer ReadyNAS deliver 50 to ~100 MB/s.
