NV+ SODIMM failed after RAIDiator 4.1.13 [SOLVED]
Update 01/21/2014 -- replacing the SODIMM in the NV+ appears to have solved this problem. No idea why the memory failed shortly after the upgrade to 4.1.13, other than coincidence, Murphy's Law . . .
The replacement SODIMM is a "Crucial Technology CT12864X335 1GB PC2700 DDR 333MHZ 200PIN SODIMM 2.5V CL2.5 Unbuffered Non-ECC Upgrade Memory Module" available from Amazon for $24.99
======
I updated my NV+ (RND4000) to RAIDiator 4.1.13 (sparc) via the Frontview Remote Update.
The ReadyNAS rebooted and showed the new firmware. I checked logs and everything looked good.
The next morning, after the scheduled shutdown, the NV+ didn't power up correctly. I can't see it on RAIDar. I powered down, reseated the drives. I shows a recurring LED pattern, but I can't find the PDF for the LED patterns for the NV+ -- what happened to the LED Patterns documentation?
Here is the LED sequence when I plug in the power cord:
1. all LEDs blink rapidly twice then go dark
2. the power button blinks rapidly, then goes dark
3. LEDs 1 and 3 stay come on and stay on
What does this mean?

That means it can't find a valid RAIDiator firmware image and you should try USB Boot Recovery.
Before you try that though do you have the stock 256 MB RAM module in the NAS or a 3rd party 1GB module? - kmm454AspirantI tried USB Boot Recovery, but never get to the LED sequence at 5 seconds. LEDs 1 and 3 are constant and holding the Power button does nothing.
I pulled the RAM. It has a tag that reads "PC2700-1GB/200P-64x8" -- so I guess it was upgraded. The unit has been running reliably for 5+ years.
Any idea what the LED pattern means? - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredIt means what I said.
Perhaps try USB Boot Recovery of 4.1.8 then a OS Re-install. - kmm454AspirantAs I read the USB Boot Recovery instructions, "Connect the USB flash drive to any USB port and hold down the power button for 20 seconds until after
the hard drive lights blink the 4rth time. While you are holding down the power button, you will see the hard drive lights
flash at 5 sec, 10 sec, 15 sec and finally at 20 seconds."
. . . it's necessary for the hard drive LEDs to blink. They don't blink. Instead, LED 1 and LED 3 glow solid. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredSo you still have the error in the LED pattern document. Might need to replace the RAM module with another.
- vandermerweMasterkmm454, can we just confirm that you are starting the boot recovery process from a point where the Readynas is off?
- kmm454AspirantYes, the unit is off. The power cord is not plugged in. Since I wasn't clear earlier, here's more info:
1. The LCD does not light up.
2. When I plug the power cord into the ReadyNAS, no Ethernet cable is attached. The fan goes on full speed when the cord is plugged in.
3. I tried the USB Boot recovery, but since the LCD is unlit and blank I relied on LED pattern — in other words, no status messages display on the LCD
4. With the reset button pressed before and after plugging the power cord, the ReadyNAS goes through the four drive LED flash sequence twice, then LED 2 and 4 light up and the unit becomes unresponsive
5. I removed the four drives in hopes of preserving the data on them; I've been trying to recover the firmware using a single 1TB Seagate drive (yes, it's on the compatibility list)
6. I don't have the original 256MB memory, but I've ordered a Crucial 1GB SODIMM that worked well in a different NV+ as a way to test whether the memory is bad.
Finally, just for context, the ReadyNAS is owned by a local nonprofit. I'm a volunteer trying to help them recover. - vandermerweMasterCan you force the unit to shutdown by holding the power button?
If so can you try to initiate the USB boot recovery process from an off state with the power cord in?
Probably won't make any difference but no harm in trying while you wait for the memory. - kmm454AspirantThanks for your help!
Alas, the power button has no effect. I've pushed it down for over a minute with no response. The only button that has any effect is the reset button. - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserHow many disks are in the NV+?
