Please Help!

I have 400K+ photos backed up on my ReadyNas. I switched over the a Mac Air about a year ago and figured out how to connect the Air via AFP. A few months ago I replaced my wireless modem with a std modem connected to a wif fi router and a switch. For 3 months I have not been able to connect to the ReadyNas and really need my photos for the holidays. I know that I should try trouble shooting first and spent hours trying to get this up and running to no avail.

Please help!

Did you have a static IP address configured on the ReadyNAS? That is the usual cause for this problem.

If so, you can do an OS reinstall on the NAS - which would reset the admin password to the default value, and reset the IP configuration to DHCP.

There are a couple other methods you could use, but they are simpler if you have an ethernet connection for the PC.
  • BTW, I could connect this to a noteboook computer if needed to update the firmware for the readynas or OS.

Maybe try installing RAIDar and see if it can find the NAS. If it does, than it will tell you the IP address it is using. If you let us know the IP address for the NAS and the laptop, then we can see if the IP address of the NAS is mismatched with your new home network.

If you have a unit with an LCD panel, it will also show you the IP address.

What ReadyNAS model do you own?
  • RAIDar is now loading (as of yesterday after a month of trying to update the software). The LED screen shows 192.168.0.4. But when I click "locate" the lights don't blink even though it shows the MAC address. This is probably the first symptom. At least I got

    I have the ReadyNASNV+.
  • Could it be 10.0.1.8? I'm connected by wireless via an Airport Extreme connected to my Time Warner cable modem. By muy AirPort utility it looks like the modem is 10.0.1.1.

Your router has two IP addresses - an external (public) address, and an internal (private) address. http://whatismyipaddress.com/ returns the public address (which I removed from your post, since it could be traced back to you).

Your new router uses 10.0.1.x private addresses, but your ReadyNAS is still using an 192.168.0.x private address. The old network undoubtedly used 192.168.0.x, and somewhere along the line you configured the NAS to use a fixed address (e.g., 192.168.0.4).

The old 192 address is not within the 10.0.1.x range, and that is why you cannot reach it.

The simplest solution is to do an OS reinstall from the front panel (being very careful not to do a factory reset by mistake). The procedure is described on pages 23-24 here: http://www.readynas.com/download/docume ... 6Dec11.pdf

The OS reinstall will reset the NAS to get the IP address automatically - which should show up as 10.0.1.x on the LCD panel. It will also reset the admin password back to factory default (which is netgear1 in your case). No other settings should be affected.

After you are up and running, you can configure the router to assign the NAS a consistent IP address- that will make reaching it a bit more reliable/consistent. Netgear routers call this feature "address reservation", though there are other names for it. When you get basic connectivity back, let us know what router you have and we can probably help with that.
  • Thanks! I pushed reset, turned on power, and when I saw Reset OS, I released the reset button. It's now saying "Installing Firmware". Hope it works! Thanks!!!
