Readynas 104 drops out when copying to it
I have a readynas 104 configured with four 4tb drives in raid 5. I've managed to copy about 6tb onto the device without issue but now whenever I go to copy something onto the box, lets say a single 4gb file, it starts out ok and will copy around 1gb of the file at 31MB/second but then the connection drops out completely and I get an error message saying:
There is a problem accessing Z:\....
Make sure you are connected to the network and try again.
Now I've obviously mapped drive Z: to the box and when I say it drops out, I can still ping it's IP address. I have tried both NIC's with different cables and in different ports on the router with exactly the same result every time. I am running two other buffalo NAS boxes off the same router and they are working fine.
I can view the files etc over readycloud and check it's performance without problem and in reasonable time, but then as soon as I copy a file over in explorer, readycloud all but freezes and wont let you navigate through the various screens. And once I try to copy a file across I can still view files and directories on the box in explorer, albeit it takes about 30 seconds or so to load each directory which is ridiculous, but before attempting to copy each directory will load almost instantly as you would expect.
Any ideas?

But Factory reset means Data loss, isn't it ? - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserFactory reset means data loss (and reinstalling add-ons, reconfiguring the NAS). Painful, but apparently the only way to solve the performance issues.
- xeltrosApprenticeI guess you can save the data by doing some nasty commands but this will require time with no success warranty.
Netgear changed the BTRFS filesystem metadata size (node and leaf size) to solve the problem. The only way to set them is by sending a format command (mkfs.btrfs), that's why they ask for a reset, simple, safe, fast and effective way to do so.
I believe you can do it yourself.
=> Since BTRFS can be resized easily, you can shrink your BTRFS volume
=> create a new one with the good node/leaf size
=> then transfer data from the old to the new volume (shrink again if necessary)
=> delete old volume (except if you have enough space to keep the old and the new copy of your files in the NAS, that way you would have a backup copy in the eventuality of a problem with the new partition after reboot).
=> update fstab
=> reboot to check
In theory this should work but I have never tried, I believe nobody has in the forum. If it works you save your data but I don't think Netgear will like to support your NAS if they discover you've done this somehow. If it doesn't work you may need a factory reset (even though you don't touch the / so it should reboot anyway with or without the data).
If you have a backup (and you really should), I really advise to do it the Netgear Way, you will need time to copy but it's cleaner and supported by Netgear. If you don't have a backup copy, I advise to get one. If you can't get one then you can try this but that's tricky and any error can cause data loss. Last option is to stay in your NAS current state. - Mace_WindooAspirantHello everyone,
ReadyNAS 6.1.5 is officially released on the support site, below is a link to the new firmware which includes BTRFS changes that have been implemented to resolve some of this issues mentioned this thread. Specifically, devices that experience performance issues or non-responsive behavior when consuming the majority of capacity (> ~70% ).
To take advantage of this update, you must format your existing volume after the update is applied, this will allow ReadyNASOS to create a new filesystem using a more optimum configuration (Warning: Factory Default will wipe existing data and settings from your ReadyNAS). After that the new filesystem configuration will now have a larger node size that can accommodate higher file system usage on systems with 512Mb RAM such as the ReadyNAS 104
I understand that this is an inconvenience however, it is the only way to make this type of change.
To upgrade your NAS to 6.1.5:
1. download the from the links below. Extract all the files from the downloaded zip file.
2. From the ReadyNAS UI go to System > Settings and click “Install Firmware”.
3. Browse to the .img file and open it.
4. Select upload
5. Once the upload is complete, you will need to reboot the system
6. For user experiencing the above issues we are recommending a factory default to get the new file system. As I stated earlier, please make sure you backup first as your system will be wiped clean

Many thanks - chirpaLuminaryMace, that isn't a final build, its RC9 (ReadyNASOS-6.1.5-RC9). Did someone upload the wrong build to the FTP site? If you look at other threads on here, this build also has serious USB port issues, how did it pass QA?
- Mace_WindooAspirantAre you sure it is T9? Does it state T9 in the UI?
- chirpaLuminaryIt doesn't say RC9 in the GUI, except for the description field of an available update; look at the header of the firmware image...

Release notes should to be updated in the Limitations section to reference USB3 ports are broken in this current 6.1.5 build.
Look around the forums, many reports of this major blocker... - Mace_WindooAspirantThis release has been created to overcome the issues described in this thread and a newely created security fix for samba. The files in my post are to assist users with those two issues.
Thank you - chirpaLuminaryStill, the USB3 issues that are new to this release need to be addressed. One step forward, two steps backwards.
Maybe the release of 6.1.5 should wait until Skywalker is back from leave, so it can be properly sanitized? - vandermerweMasterHello Mace
There is some feedback in this thread:
viewtopic.php?f=154&t=74192
I think I speak for many users in suggesting that Netgear should perhaps offer more beta releases for user feedback before releasing final release firmware; although it seems that 6.1.5 is actually still a RC version.
I do not understand, if you are a Netgear representative why you would post an announcement like this in a thread like this.
Surely you should use the board administrators to post a general announcement.
