ReadyNAS 214 Won't Restart/Shutdown

Hi,

I have a bit of an odd problem and admittedly you can only reproduce it after doing something quite specific. So if I have a .mkv file in one Share and I connect to the NAS via Windows Explorer and copy the file to another Share on the NAS the file transfer hangs immeadiatly and locks up Explorer and only a system restart can recover the system. Sounds like a PC issue right, but then when you go to the admin page for the NAS through a browser, the entire system is fine EXCEPT it can't then load the directory where you tried to copy the file to.

I left it a while then went back and nothing changed, so I went for a restart to see if i can access the directory again, however the power light flashes on the NAS and the LCD says restarting however the box stays active with all Shares/Apps availible and the admin page reloads back to its normal state. I don't want to button the unit unless you know a "safe" way. Could this be a bug in the ReadyNAS OS as its happened even after i've completely reset the unit (including disks/data). Perhaps the Beta build might help to force the restart and resolve the bug?

Any help would be appreciated, here are my specs; ReadyNAS 214 4 x 3TB WD Red, X-RAID. ReadyNAS OS: 6.6.1

  • UPDATE: I after trying to switch off apps to rule out them messing around with files and trying to set a scheduled restart to see if that would work I now cannot access the admin page at all, it just times out and reloads. I can still see it in RAIDar and can browse to it via IP address but not through hostname and I cannot SSH either. Any ideas?

I'm tempted to pull the power now as the logs don't show anything odd and even a restart command from the app didn't work either.

UPDATE 2: I decided as I took a backup not long ago I would just pull the power and the system has come back up and is speedy fast again which is good. However I think im concered with the fact that today and a few weeks ago (when my array completely died) it was both the result of asking the unit to restart and then it wouldn't.

My logs don't show a problem with SMART or anything so could it be the NAS itself being faulty? And should I try restarting it again now to see if it can point blank?

        What firmware are you running?

One option (brute force) is to do a factory reset, and rebuild the NAS from scratch.  Then restore the data from the backup.

If the problem is still there, then it could well be the NAS hardware.

  • Hi, thanks for the reply it's 6.6.1. I did do a factory reset last time after I had to pull the power and it destroyed the array after not booting and it seems like it's just happened again.

Would you say if I can't restart it now then it would be worth an RMA, or maybe a firmware upgrade to beta?

You could try contacting support and ask about an RMA.

One variation on the reset - if you have a scratch disk, you could power down, remove the drives (labeling by slot), and install the scratch disk.  Then see if the scratch disk system behaves the same way.

  • I might give that a whirl with a spare I have actually, I did get the unit on Amazon so I'm sure they'd RMA quite happily if asked. I'll see what my testing throws up.

Can you provide the full system logs (see the Sending Logs link in my sig)?

        Hi,

I've just sent the logs in. I also just tried shutting down the system from within the UI which worked, so it seems that the issue with the unit locking up only occurs after transferring a file between Shares from Windows.

  • Hi, I did send through the complete .zip I got from RAIDar.

Maybe get another one (perhaps from the web ui log page), and resend.

I had a look at what I pulled from the UI and it is different so i've sent those logs from this morning across. Cheers for the help everyone.

Buxton, I've been trying to reproduce your issue, but I've been unable to so far.  Are the two shares you are copying between on the same volume?  What version of Windows are you using?

I've been testing with Windows 10, and with both shares on the same volume, copying a set of about 30 ~1-2GB files between shares.

BTW, here's a little trick for copying files between shares.  If you log in to the NAS as the "admin" user from Windows Explorer, you should see a share called "data" (assuming your data volume is still named "data").  If you copy files between the share directories under the "data" share, it will happen almost instantly, and the copies will consume no additional space.

Hi, Yeah the two Shares are on the same volume called "data". One is a Transmission share and the other is a share for videos. I have the volume mounted as a network drive in Windows using the admin credentials, however it looks like Windows does try to copy it across as it gets to 12% then freezes and can even crash Explorer.
