ReadyNas 6.2 (NAS locks up entirely)
EDIT BY MODERATOR: Please see the post at the end of the thread: http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=456217#p456217
I guess i am not the only one this is happening to!
everything worked fine for 6.1.9 (except for my root at 99% problem last month)
once I updated, I transferred aprox 2 gigs of information it locks up every time
all apps are working fine.
as a business owner i have come to the conclusion (with the amount of problems i have been having) ReadyNas is not meant for a reliable means of backing up seems majority of the fixes are "back everything up and factory reset!" I think that answer is as good as telling someone with computer problems to hit there computer a few times and see if it works.
now i have gone to support many times yes they are quite helpful but only within 90 days of purchase of the unit! then they insist that i pay for a extension of that support.... i have 3 IBM servers and when there hardware fails (one little problem with a driver one year later) they back up the reseller in making sure my system is back up and running within 48 hours (no they are not leased or have a protection plan)
If it wasent for the guys in the forums i would have beaten the system with a bat (please see Office space the movie)... sorry for the rant just truly frustrated with the system

- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserI'm not affected by these lockups (and don't work for Netgear). But I have been following it, and it seems to me that it is quite likely that there is more than one issue behind it. That would explain why some releases solve the lockups for some users, but not all.
(speaking as mod) Even if it turns out there is a common root cause, generally we find it works best to have each user create their own thread. If you are trying to help, it makes it much easier to track what each user has already tried, what their particular set up is, and what their outcomes are (and have been). If multiple folks with problems post to the same thread, it always gets very tangled. - RifyTutor

Please note you WILL LOOSE all data on the NAS as it requires Factory Default.
Any body here has test ? The downgrade fix lockup issue ?
mdgm can you give us the procedure to downgrade at your own risk for "security part" ?
And no i am in France, so i can't send you my NAS... - ArneG1Aspirant

Of course a tread WILL evolve to be a very tangled one when a critical problem like this persists month after month (approaching half a year now) without any final solution that fix the problem which the thread initially is about.
Also keep in mind that to most ordinary users all 'technical chit-chat' about various internal/lowlevel issues causing this problem, may very well be put in the account labeled "nerdy geektalk around the same problem". Because the PROBLEM the users are experiencing in the end, is the same for all; They had a perfectly reliable NAS that begun crashing randomly after upgrade to 6.2.x. Now many have been stuck with a totally useless NAS for months while Netgear STILL is 'doing ALL they possibly can do' to figure out what internals of their own ReadyNasOS that is killing many RN10x-systems. It's a shame all these months without a fix... - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee Retired

Ok, so you are absolutely sure that there is not ONE mainproblem at the bottom of this?
Some users in this thread encountered issues that have been fixed in 6.2.3 beta. For those still experiencing issues there may well be ONE main problem but triggered in different ways and we have proceeded with that in mind. - StephenBGuru - Experienced User
Almost every thread that has multiple users posting their issues/status simultaneously gets hopelessly tangled. It happens in a couple of days (as soon as the thread expands to two or more pages). Any of us who provide advice here will tell you the same thing. We lose track of who has tried what, exactly what firmware each is running, exactly what symptoms each is seeing, etc. It's much better if each user with an issue posts on their own thread. However, its way too late for that on this topic.ArneG wrote: Of course a tread WILL evolve to be a very tangled one when a critical problem like this persists month after month (approaching half a year now) without any final solution that fix the problem which the thread initially is about.
I understand that you are upset. But there is and will continue to be lots of "technical chit-chat" in this user community. If that bothers you, then maybe its not a good forum for you.ArneG wrote: Also keep in mind that to most ordinary users all 'technical chit-chat' about various internal/lowlevel issues causing this problem, may very well be put in the account labeled "nerdy geektalk around the same problem". I've reviewed this particular thread (all 21 pages), and most of the technical comments are coming from users (often directed to other users), not by Netgear. Netgear is responding to user questions, and is in some cases is asking for more information. - shoeminatorAspirantupdate on my downgrade to T1721....
more stable than beta 9
but .... locking up between 1 and 3 times a day.
sometimes under load, sometimes not under load.
so .... whilst I appreciate the help .... my now unreliable NAS is a pain point !!
What really disturbs me .... my local retailer seems to have picked up a large number of RN104s from the supplier which are being sold very cheaply to the unwary :-(
not cool !!
and ... I'm in Australia ... so I guess I can't send my unit. pity because if "reliably fails" is what you're after, it has it is spades :-(
When can we just get these replaced or refunded under the 3 year warranty ? - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredSent you a PM.
- dsm1212ApprenticeAs others say there can be more than one problem with the lockup symptom, but in this case I'd have to point out that there are probably not a lot of people in the world running btrfs on the Marvel Armada 370 so this may be processor specific. These are difficult problems. If it's a kernel bug (hopefully) then netgear should be able to capture kernel dumps to analyze. Since this is a highly integrated chip there are many drivers interacting with it.
mdgm can you confirm if netgear has repro'd the issue in house? In my experience that is a huge first step and until it happens people are shooting in the dark with backports, code review findings, and other theories.
steve - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredWe have reproduced some lockups in house, but those ones have been dealt with, I believe. Yet still users are experiencing issue.
We are in contact with Marvell on this issue. - tommylommytommyAspirantWe're coming up on half a year with having these problems, caused by readynas themselves, and seeing no light at the end of the tunnel i have given up and is currently shopping for another, non-netgear, nas system.
Wish the rest of you the best of luck. Hope readynas sometime in the future will be able to recreate the error and fix it so things will be as they were on 6.1.9 for you guys.
