ReadyNAS Data Recovery - Duo v2
I came here from Erik's post on First Person Troubleshooter. Couldn't post a comment there for some reason.
I'm running VMware on Mac and have successfully launched the Debian instance but cannot get the HD to mount.
It is a drive from a ReadyNAS Duo V2 (RAID 1). The two drives were mirrored, so I’m wondering if one drive counts as a ‘single drive’ and can be restored using this method.
I’ve got as far as running Debian in VMware but am unable to mount the drive. Can anyone confirm whether or not this should be possible?
I'm now downloading the newer Debian image and will try again.

Are you using Flex-RAID RAID-1 or X-RAID?
Confirmed it's a ReadyNAS Duo V2 and using RAID 1. - AusS2000TutorAny idea if I'm on the right track or wasting my time?
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredAusS20000 why are you trying to recover your data this way?
What's wrong with your NAS?
The v2 is completely different to the v1.
For the v2 you don't use fuse-ext2.
You need to assemble the array using mdadm
Then still use vgscan, vgchange -a y and mount the data volume. - AusS2000TutorA hacker broke into my network and deleted the content from the drive. I'm simply looking to do an undelete and this is the method I came across.
So to reiterate, it's a ReadyNAS Duo V2 in RAID 1 (mirrored) configuration. I have removed one of the drives and am trying to restore it's content.
Any suggestions welcome. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredWith data having been deleted that makes things more complex again.
An option you would have would be to contact support and purchase an initial diagnostics data recovery contract. Support could analyse the system to see what chances there are of recovering data.
You could also try a 3rd party data recovery service that is familiar with Linux, mdadm, lvm2 etc.
You may also wish to clone your drives before data recovery is attempted. - AusS2000TutorThe issue at present is the inability to mount the volume in the VMware instance of Debian. If I can't get over that hurdle I'm getting no where and no amount of support contracts will help.
Any help on that issue? - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredWhat's wrong with the Duo v2 other than you believe it was hacked?
The instructions for the VM are for the v1 not the v2.
For the v2 you'd need to do something like:
# apt-get install mdadm
# mdadm --assemble --scan
# vgscan
# vgchange -a y
# mount -o ro /dev/c/c /mnt - AusS2000TutorThere is no issue with the V2 other than my firewall was circumvented and a bunch of files deleted off it.
Thanks for the code. Are you suggesting I enter that in the terminal of the Debian instance that is trying to mount the volume?
Or that I should put the drive back in the V2 and SSH to it and enter it there? - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredIf you were to contact our support and purchased a data recovery contract they could have a look at your system to perform an initial diagnostics as to what could be done.
They could use a low-level diagnostic mode we have on the NAS to investigate.
I would not recommend you attempt to recover your data yourself as you may simply make it harder to recover if it is even possible. - AusS2000TutorIs this a forum for sharing technical help or selling support contracts?
If this is not the place to come to for help can you recommend somewhere more helpful?
