Readynas Duo: Dead drive 1 - what are my options?

Drive 1 just reported as dead.
Rebooted and running OK on drive 2.

Is there anything I can do to check disk 1 before getting it replaced under warranty?
If it isn't covered for some reason, would people advise replacing with the same drive or it doesn't matter?

(For ref: the dead drive is a Samsung HD103UJ 1GB)

  • I've been a fan of western digital right now since my seagate went bad. Hope fully as you hope , your under warranty and you might get an upgrade discount depending on if the drive still being sold. I'd just worry they'd charge you some extra fee due to Tiawans flooding issues.
  • Ok. THis is a bit more worrying (or not). Removed drive 1 and reseated, and at some point, rebooted, I suspect. Drive went into sync and now shows as fine...

Here's SMART+ info about the drive 1 (which previously reported as DEAD):

And, for info, here's drive 2 (never reported as DEAD)

    Start Stop Count 114
    Reallocated Sector Count 0

Any thoughts on any of this? What would other people do in my position? (apart from make sure backup is reliable)

Well the drive most likely has problems. I would power down, remove the drive, connect it to a SATA port on your PC and check it as I suggested above.
  • Thanks mdgm. Will do that and report back with anything of interest.
  • Should be noted you will probably need to the do the disk test anyway if its like Segate's return policy . Seagate uses a code in their test to decide what to do with the disk and you can't return without putting something there.

All that's left after that is do I want to pay to get it fast?, or should I wait a week and ship it back myself? I ended up with the get it fast since it came with packaging materials and prepaid shipping.

Actually you can (there is a special code you can enter indicating that you know the drive is bad). I've done this occasionally and had no issues with the return.

The advanced replacement option (where they ship you a drive first, and include a return shipping label) is what I do. It is about the same price as doing the shipping yourself, and you get the drive much quicker. This is only available in the US though.
