ReadyNAS duo not visible to Time Machine
Howdy!
I am not a well versed IT user (i.e. dumb) and I am having problems to start using Time Machine and ReadyNAS. I was trying to follow the instructions posted in this article:
http://www.readynas.com/?p=1097
But ReadyNAS does not show up as an option when I have to "Choose a backup disk" (the list is empty).
AFP is turned on (I turned on both Appletalk and Bonjour just in case).
Current firmware version is RAIDiator 4.1.7-T49 [1.00a043]. I understand there is a new one (at least I got email updates advising me about it) but it says 4.1.7. I suspect -T49 was a "Beta" version and 4.1.7 is now official. Should I upgrade? I have 2x2TB disks installed in X-RAID mode and they are pretty empty (2% only). They are WDC WD20EARS-00MVWB0 (supposedly 4K sectors).
On the Mac side, I have Mac OS 10.5.8, 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2GB SDRAM.
Any pointers will be much appreciated.
Happy 2011!

- Ok.
Multicast upgrade: enabled (tick)
Multicast IP address: 192.168.1.100 (fixed IP of NAS)
Multicast port number: 5353
Pressed SUBMIT then went to the iMac System Preferences / Time MAchine / Select Disk - sadly still no ReadyNAS showing as I'd hoped.
Any further suggestions?
Would I need to configure any type of Port Mapping on the router btw (http://screenshots.portforward.com/Huaw ... apping.htm)? - HI again. Any suggestions out there? Really appreciate any help you can offer up. fyi I am progressing a support ticket with Netgear who are trying numerous NAS setting changes with me. Sadly the ReadyNAS does not appear as a TimeMachine backup disk still. :-(
- BjornemannAspirantHi!
Found this thread looking for a solution for myself. My problem was that when i hooked my Mac to the LAN, not the WLAN, the AFP/CIFS shares as well as the Time Machine backup disk would not show on my Mac. Here's what i did to display the Time Machine backup disk, somewhat similar to what nielsNL wrote earlier:
Open Finder, and Go -> Connect to server -> afp://IPADDRESSOFNAS/ReadyNAS -> Use the Username/Password set in the Time Machine panel on the NAS.
The Time Machine backup disk should now show in finder, and should also pop up in the Time Machine preference panel.
Hope it works out!
Bjørn - Hi Bjorn.
Many thanks for your reply to this thread. I've just had a go with your suggestion. I get an error message "There was a problem connecting to the service "<NAS ip address>". The share does not exist on the server. Please check the share name, and then try again". I've checked the TIMEMACHINE setting on the NAS, which has username ReadyNAS and a password that I've set. TIME MACHINE is enabled (ticked). Any idea whether a SHARE needs to be setup called ReadyNAS in order for the TIMEMACHINE facility to work/be seen by my MAC? Thanks in advance. - Hey, just found this thread : viewtopic.php?f=28&t=55683#p316507
I cleared my previous KEYCHAINS on the Mac for any previous connections made to the NAS. Then I tried a different SERVER ADDRESS when connecting to the NAS via FINDER (normally, I'd been using afp://NAS_IP_ADDRESS which let me see the SHARES etc)
This time, I followed the above post by using SERVER ADDRESS afp://ReadyNAS@NAS_IP_ADDRESS/ and hey presto, it connected as normal. Quickly flicked to the TIME MACHINE icon on my Mac, and there is the ReadyNAS available under SELECT DISK!
I'm over the moon that this has now been resolved. Now I'm really keen for someone to help explain the difference in the two SERVER ADDRESSES.
Thanks and hope this helps for anyone else who's been pulling their hair out for months!!!
Happy New Year! - Hi there. One step forward, two steps back!
So, I have managed to make the ReadyNAS appear as a backup disk location on my iMac at last :- viewtopic.php?f=71&t=49063&p=339907#p339907
This is fine, however the user 'ReadyNAS' (i.e.. the user setup in the NAS Timemachine tab), does not have access to see SHARES, despite me allowing GUEST access to them.
So I'm now in this bizarre situation where I have to make two connections to the RadyNAS from my iMac as follows:-
1)
* Mac FINDER : GO > CONNECT TO SERVER > SERVER ADDRESS > afp://192.168.1.100/ReadyNAS
* Login Prompt > Username = ReadyNAS / Password = as set on Frontview (under TimeMachine settings)
* Mac FINDER then shows the ReadyNAS as a connected DEVICE but no directories/shares display when I click on the ReadyNAS item
* Mac SYSTEM PREFERENCES > TIME MACHINE > ReadyNAS (192.168.1.100) displays as a Backup disk location
Disconnect from the ReadyNAS (via Mac FINDER).
2)
FINDER > GO > NETWORK and I see an item called ''readynas'' (note all in lowercase).
Click on this item and I see 3 x Shares (BACKUP, DOWNLOADS, MEDIA)
''Connected As'' reads ''Guest''
Flick back to Mac SYSTEM PREFERENCES > TIME MACHINE > ''ReadyNAS-1'' (192.168.1.100) greyed out as a backup destination.
I feel like I'm chasing my tail here. Surely things shouldn't be this difficult?
I was hoping to remain connected to the NAS as user ReadyNAS (so that TimeMAchine backup could take place) AND also see the Shares & Files on the NAS.
Appreciate your help.
D - hecarrAspirantHad same problem. Tried Niels solution. Worked like a champ. :D Thanks Niels
- Open Finder, From the menu choose Go - Connect to Server. Type in afp://<readynas>/ReadyNAS (substitute <readynas> with your ReadyNAS IP address).
- Login using username ReadyNAS and the chosen password, I also added the password to the keychain.
- You should now be able to see the ReadyNAS volume in Time Machine.
