ReadyNAS Duo share access via WE stopped working
Team,
Hope to get some advises here about the strange situation with my ReadyNAS Duo (v1) RND2000-100.
Configuration:
Model: ReadyNAS Duo [X-RAID]
Firmware: RAIDiator 4.1.10 [1.00a043]
HDDs: 2 x 2TB Western Digital WD Green WD20EARS (in mirror)
HDDs are used in about 55%
Symptoms:
Can’t access the device shares via Windows Explorer, which was working fine. It trows an error message:"\\192.168.1.2\media is not accessible. You might not have permissions to access this network resource." regardless credentials used (I use the correct ones) and below "The network path wasn't found".
Possible event which caused the problem:
Inappropriate shut down after long electricity break out and UPS failure.
State:
ReadyNAS web based dashboard is accessible and partially functional.
I can’t restart or shutdown the device from there. It gets to the home page after choosing a turn off option and hitting “Apply”.
Turn off is possible from the “PowerOff” button on the device when pressed for 5 sec.
Shares and data are accessible via HTML interface and it is fully functional.
Shares and data are accessible via ReadyDNLA streaming service.
Dashboard home page shows:
Hostname: HomeNAS
Model: ReadyNAS Duo [X-RAID]
Serial: xxxxxxxxxx
Firmware: RAIDiator 4.1.10 [1.00a043]
Memory: 256 MB [2.5-3-3-7]
IPv4 address:: 192.168.1.2
Volume C: Online, RAID Level , disks, 0% of 0 MB used
Dashboard bottom located state indicators show:
Volume: Green circle; Disk: Grey circle, Grey circle; Fan: Green circle; UPS: Grey circle;
In “Volumes”->”Volumes Settings”
Disk space:
0 MB (0%) of 0 MB used
Available Disks:
Ch : WDC WD20EARS-00S8B1 [8 MB] 0 MB free
Ch : WDC WD20EARS-00S8B1 [8 MB] 0 MB free
In “Status”->”Health” I can see both HDDs with green circles and status Ok, nevertheless their size is 0 (zero) and “Smart+” test doesn't produce any result.
_____
Disk WDC WD20EARS-00S8B1 0 GB , 38 C / 100 F , Write-cache ON, OK
Disk WDC WD20EARS-00S8B1 0 GB , 36 C / 96 F , Write-cache ON, OK
_____
What I have done so far:
Searched the web and read multiple threads in ReadyNas.com forum trying to troubleshoot the situation - haven’t progress at all.
Restarted the device from its front “PowerOff” button and turn it on again – No change in the state.
Reset the device and reinstall its OS (suspected OS corruption) (http://www.readynas.com/kb/faq/boot/how ... v_nv_x6600)– No change in the state.
Any suggestions on how to proceed further with troubleshooting the situation will be highly appreciated. It will be helpful also if from the above is clear for the experts that there is a hardware problem and they confirm it.
I would gladly provide more information if needed and someone can indicate to me what that information is.
Thank you in advance.

- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserIf you have a backup [or spare disks] you can try a factory reset.
Do you have ssh access enabled? - vgoranovAspirantHi StephenB,
Thank you for your response.
Actually I can find some spare disks (I don't have a backup) and try factory reset. That is an excellent idea!
I don't think I have it enabled, but I guess I can enable SSH easily. If I recall correctly it is one of the default services installed on the device and I can try if it will respond on "SSH check box" checked then "Apply" (not sure all features are functional at the moment).
What would I do with it if it works? - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserYou'd need to install an addon to get ssh. Folks here might be able to help if they could see the state of the underlying linux file system. IF its not there, it might be best not to mess with the installing more stuff on a crippled system.
A factory reset on a spare disk would just assure us that the duo platform is fully operational. It wouldn't fix anything on your real disks.
You can also try to look at disk 1 in a PC (using linux reader from http://www.diskinternals.com/linux-reader/) If the data is there, you can pull it off in Windows, and then rebuild the duo/restore from backup. Remember that the NAS will wipe disks that you insert when it is powered up, so make sure you don't hot-insert your operational drives. - vgoranovAspirantGot it.
I'm really glad you didn't assume I'm Linux guy and provided Windows based Linux reader. Highly appreciated! Hope I wouldn't need to run in the details of 4kb vs 16 kb blocksize issue (well described here: http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=24861 and way beyond my capabilities)
Will write back once I have all test run and will be extra careful to not make hot-insert with my operational drives. - vgoranovAspirantProgress update:
ReadyNas Duo
Two new disks were inserted in the device.
Factory reset was performed.
ALL ReadyNas services and the device itself work like a charm.
Here is the disk health status:
Disk 1 Seagate ST380013AS 74 GB , 37 C / 98 F , Write-cache ON OK
Disk 2 Seagate ST380013AS 74 GB , 36 C / 96 F , Write-cache ON OK
Conclusion - ReadyNas Duo platform is fully operation.
Operational disks
DiskInternals Linux Reader was installed on Windows XP (last SP) and Windows 7 (last SP).
Disk 1 is visible and readable under both OSs:
Four logical volumes are present "Volume 1-4" and accessible.
The content can be copied. Unfortunately some of the files are OK, other seem to be corrupted. I started copying some family images and some are just copied fine: I can open and see the image after copy. Other are copied and in the intend to open them I get an error: "Invalid Image".
SWAG: Some sectors of the disk have been corrupted or the files are fragmented and the Linux Reader is not capable to copy them correctly.
I plan to copy all disk content in the way it is copyable now. That would be my backup. Then I will try to mount the disk under some Linux distribution (What about latest Ubuntu?) and see what is its response there. If I'm lucky Linux will be able to read correctly fragmented files (really nice assumption :)). Lastly I will search for a tool which could fix corrupted sectors or order the fragments on the disk and try to run it.
If you identify gaps/traps in the plan please let me know. Ideas are very welcome. - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserDiskInternals also has some for-pay tools which are supposed to recover data from damaged disks. I've never used them, so this is not a recommendation. I'm just pointing them out. If the raid tools works with the duo format, then that has the advantage of using both disks for recovery. If you are limited to a single disk, then if the data sectors are corrupted, the data is gone. if the folder structure or metadata is corrupted, you have a chance. With two disks, the odds are better (especially if the bad sectors cannot be read at all).
There is a guide for mounting the disk under linux here: http://home.bott.ca/webserver/?p=306
When you do get things up and running, you should put a backup plan in place.
