ReadyNAS Pro 6 install not allocating all available space
Two issues:
Win 8.1. Six 4TB HGST Deskstar NAS HDs. Connected via Ethernet to router. I can see it fine on the network.
X-RAID2 only allocates 8.1TB (RAID 0 allocates 10). 1.673 TB each drive. Attempted to install via RAIDar (both RAID 0 and X-RAID2) and allow factory reset timeout (X-RAID2).
Additionally, RAIDiator firmware update via RAIDar GUI fails.

- vandermerweMasterWhat firmware is on the pro 6?
It's not completely clear from your post, did you actually do a factory default with all 6 drives in place?
If you did, what happens if you factory default with 1 drive in place?
What drives were in the nas before this procedure started?
You don't want to use raid 0 do you, so perhaps just factory default into Xraid .
Those drives are of course not on the HCL for any readynas model, which has to be considered here. Why did you choose them? - Xr8dAspirantInstalling for the first time. I did a factory default with all 6 drives in place. All six drives are recognized. I haven't tried a single drive install.
I would like the ability to expand/install larger drives in the future which is why I chose XRAID. RAID 0 was really just to see if it would allocate all available space. It didn't.
The 3TB models are. I just read "Must be used with 4.2.16 or newer firmware". I have 4.2.15. That may be the smoking gun. Which is part two of my problem: update via RAIDar GUI fails. The front panel states: resync C: 25%. Maybe I have to wait for that to finish before I can update? - vandermerweMasterI don't see the hgst desktop nas drives in any capacity on any HCL.
The 3 tb version is model HDN724030ALE640
You could either wait for the resync to complete, reboot and see what happens, or interrupt it, factory default with one drive and update the firmware (yours is quite old) then power down, put all drives in and factory default again. I'd suggest this is a better plan.
You won't be able to expand without doing another factory default because of the 16 tb volume limit. This means that a factory default is required to setup any volume that exceeds 16 tb. - Xr8dAspirant

Good call. In progress.vandermerwe wrote:

That stinks. Hopefully 20TB (XRAID2 config if sees all of it) will last me a while. Thank you! - vandermerweMasterIs this going to hold your primary data? If so I would recommend Xraid 2 with dual redundancy.
Either way you'll need to think about backup.
How much data do you currently have? - Xr8dAspirantIt is but it's not important data. About 14T. If there ever was an electronic hoarder, it would be me.
- Xr8dAspirantSo, one disc factory reset produced the same results. 1.6TB allocated. Reinitialized with all six disks. Same. Factory reset erased firmware update of course. D/L, extracted and locally U/L firmware 4.2.27. Still showing:
Ch 1 : HGST HDN724040ALE640 [3726 GB] 1673 GB allocated
and the same for the rest of the drives.
How do I change the RAID configuration without a factory reset (which erases the updated firmware)? I must be missing something. - vandermerweMasterWell a factory reset should not do anything to the firmware version once it's been updated. Are you doing your factory resets using the boot menu?
What happens if , after setup with one disk ( factory default using boot menu) , you hot add one of the other disks to bay 2 ?
Also perhaps hook all the drives up to a PC and delete any existing partitions on them before trying anything else.
I must say that the capacity being allocated to each disk is unusual. I am wondering whether there is a compatibility issue with the hgst nas drives. - Xr8dAspirantIt was the firmware.
Ch 1 : HGST HDN724040ALE640 [3726 GB] 3721 GB allocated
When i wrote factory reset I meant "factory default". This time I selected factory default through RAIDar vice "paperclip" method. The firmware remained 4.2.27.
Possibly the firmware didn't actually update the first time but I'm pretty sure I saw 4.2.27 with the one disk installed.
It looked like that was erased with the "paperclip" method.
At any rate, it's now configured X-RAID2 with 18TB of storage space available. At least, if a drive fails, I can recover. Thank you for all your help on this. It's been a long time since I've messed with RAID. - vandermerweMasterOk good.
Perhaps once you have been using these drives for a while, you could post in the community hardware forum:
viewforum.php?f=86
and let us know how the drives are performing.
I was considering them but they're not on the HCL even for the newer units, they're expensive, and they run at 7200, presumably they will run hotter and consume more power.
