RN104 ERR: Could not mount boot flash #24323690

The other day I tried an upgrade on my RN104 through the web interface. Apparently it failed and now the LCD on the front says, "ERR: Could not mount boot flash" every time I try to boot it.

I've done every boot-menu option to no avail. Every one fails with the same message (ERR: Could not mount boot flash) except the memory test, which passes after what seems like an eternity.

I've removed all 4 of my 3TB drives, and inserted a freshly-ntfs-formated 320GB drive hoping that this would help. Again, same message.

I believe my only option is to do a USB boot re-install as mentioned here, http://www.readynas.com/kb/faq/boot/how_can_i_perform_a_boot_recovery_using_a_usb_flash_device, but I can't seem to get it to boot into there.

I've downloaded the arm version of software(firmware) v6.2.0 and stuck it on a USB drive. How do I get my RN104 to boot from the USB? Or is there a more major problem here that I'm unaware of? I'd like to keep my data from the RAID array, but I'm aware that's most likely not possible.

Hope someone can help. Thanks!

If you wanted to try a fresh install with your 320GB disk you should have unformatted it, not formatted it as NTFS. There are two common ways to unformat: (a) delete all partitions with windows disk manager, and (b) zero the drive with the vendor diagnostic (lifeguard or seatools).

Your link is not for your NAS, it is for the old SPARC version. Try support first (support.netgear.com), or perhaps mdgm might chime in on the RN100 series procedure.

Note that the procedure you are asking for is NOT in the thread referenced by Ixa.
  • Thanks StephenB.

The link to the SPARC version was simply in hopes of figuring out the procedure to get the RN104 to boot from the USB.

I tried contacting support and was kindly given the cold shoulder because my NAS is more than 90 days old. I simply asked for the USB Boot Recovery procedure.

Hopefully someone else has had to do the USB Recovery procedure on an RN104 and can help me out?

mdgm provided the procedure last time via PM.

I'd have thought that a bricked unit due to a failed firmware update would be treated as a hardware problem, not a software one. Perhaps try again with support, and tell them your unit is bricked.

Denial of support for issues like this is going to cost them business for sure.

    Hi jameaghe

I hear that support has provided you with the procedure to do a USB Boot Recovery now.

These instructions are not made public as some users will use them when it is not appropriate which can cause further issues. USB Boot Recovery formats the internal flash and puts a good copy of the firmware on it. Too often users think a USB Boot Recovery will fix their problem when their issue has nothing to do with the problem that USB Boot Recovery fixes.

However your issue is clearly related to the internal flash. If a USB Boot Recovery doesn't fix it (try a second USB key if it doesn't work with the first one) then an RMA would be needed.
  • Yes, i have been provided with the boot recovery. Unfortunately it didn't do anything, even with trying 4 different USB flash drives.

Thanks for getting back to me, and I understand the needs to keep this under wraps.

If I do get an RMA, should my raid array still work when I put it in the new nas enclosure?

Put a spare disk (must not be from your array) in the replacement NAS, update the firmware to at least as new as what you were running on the dead unit and then power down, remove the spare disk and migrate your disks across. Provided your disks and array are fine this should work fine.
