Seagate Error codes
Two of my drives in my 104 are having problems. One that died I checked with SeaTools, and it failed to run the tests and cameback with an error code E161CB4A. Anyone know what this means? A search didn't come up with anything. I'm in the middle of running a long test on the second drive. Both drives are ST3000DM001's.

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredYou should ask SeaGate what the error code means. Did SeaTools also give you an indication as to what they suggested you should do (e.g. if they suggested you should RMA the drive)?
When you say the drives were having problems, what problems were they having exactly? SMART errors? Something else?
If you need to buy new drives I would suggest considering SeaGate NAS drives, WD RED drives etc. - RVTJRAspirantHi euphos,
I have no idea what the error means, you might be good with asking seagate directly about that. It might help if you can check your logs and see the status of your drives. Generate the logs, then look for the disk_info file. Check the following per disk:
Health Data:
ATA Error Count:
Reallocated Sectors:
Current Pending Sector Count:
All of these should be zero. Otherwise, something is happening on your disk/s.. leading to possible disk failure. If the drive is came with the NAS and under warranty, then contact support for drive replacement. You can also go directly to Seagate as they will also honor the replacement of your drive, whatever fits you. Just wondering, if you have 2 disk failure and you using x-raid (raid 5) then what happened to your data? :? hope you have backup of it. - euphosAspirantThe first disk had problems a month or so ago and just died (slot#3). No error that I saw, but I didn't generate any log to investigate further. That disk was then replaced. Then about 3 weeks ago I started getting a bunch of reallocated sector counts on the disk in slot#4. Then they stopped. However The 104 is my media server, and I've been getting a lot of studdering playing videos. The error code came from the drive that died. I'm still running SeaTools on the second drive. The reallocated sector count was high enough that It need to be replaced I've been told.
Already have another drive to install. Purchased (2) ST400DM000 to use and upgrade my storage space. Luckily both of the bad drives are under warranty. Just never had to RMA drives before. These were purchased separate from the RN104. - RVTJRAspirantPlaying videos with failing drives is like watching youtube with slow internet connection. Just follow the steps on how to replace a faulty drive on your NAS, no one wants you to lose your data.
If I see your setup correctly, you now have 3 drives working... the 3rd one working but with reallocated sector counts. It will be safe to hotplug the new 4th drive and let it sync. Once sync process is done, remove the 3rd drive and hotplug the new 3rd drive. Wait for 3rd drive to sync and you will all be good. Do not turn off your unit or reboot it unless all drives are properly synced.
Goodluck with the RMA. - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserSeagate has a pretty efficient RMA process, though they will free free to substitute a different drive model that they feel is equivalent (or better). I have sometimes been able to resolve this by calling them and talking through options if I disagreed. Though it does require another return cycle, they will pay the shipping on the second round.
For US customers, the option where they pre-pay the return will get you the replacement much more quickly, and (in my experience) it costs about the same as paying the shipping yourself.
Though I haven't done enough returns to have a valid sample size, generally I've found that RMA'd drives don't seem to last as long as drives I purchased new. Once I noticed that, I decided not to put any RMA returns back into the NAS - instead I put them in other systems that I don't view as critical.
Personally if I were buying a seagate I'd have gone with the ST4000VN000. - euphosAspirant@RVTJR - Yeah - Watching videos is getting pretty difficult. The video freezes every 3-5 minutes for ~5 seconds. Actually I guess I didn't explain my setup status very well. After the first disk died (slot#3), it was replaced within a few days. I just haven't gotten around to RMA'ing it yet because I didn't think it was in warranty. So I was back up to 4 good drives again. Then I started getting the reallocation errors a few weeks ago (slot#4), and was advised by StephenB in a different thread that any errors over 50 was bad. I was at 20432, so I replaced it. The new drives just came in two days ago. I replaced slot#4 with a new ST4000DM000 (wanted to expand storage as well) and after it finished it's sync, I also replaced slot#1 with another ST4000DM000, since this had the longest power on hours, power cycle count, etc. So currently I have about 8 hours left before the sync for the last drive to sync. Will the extra storage space show up right away? Or after the sync, will it then need to do and expansion operation as well?
BTW...All data is also backed up to (2) external drives (some to one, the rest to another, since I don't have anything big enough on it's own). The drives I get as replacements (along with the still good drive from slot#1) will be used with a new Shuttle OmniNAS KD20 I just got to help up with my backups of my backups. Reviews of the KD20 were pretty bad, but for $48 bucks, it should be okay for backups. We'll see!
Also, the second drive never finished the SeaTools for DOS analysis. Something bombed out at 70%. Ran a quick check with SeaTools for Windows, and it passed the SMART test, but gave error code F49899E5 doing the Short DST. So any ideas what F49899E5 or E161CB4A mean? - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredNo, but SeaGate should know what those codes mean for your drives.
- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserYou enter the codes on the Seagate RMA on-line form.
- euphosAspirantStephenB - I thought I would be able to enter the codes, but neither of my online RMA entries gave either a specific place or even a "notes" area to enter this. I guess I can print out the SeaTools log and stick it in the box:
