Stuck trying to do a factory reset on NV

Hi,

I am trying to reset my NV box by following instructions (http://www.readynas.com/kb/faq/boot/how_do_i_use_the_boot_menu) and I am not seeing the described behavior.

Here's what I do:
1. I depress the reset button on the back and keep it depressed.
2. Power the unit up with a single press of Power button.
At this point the Power button starts blinking rapidly. All LEDs are off.

3. I keep holding the reset button.
The next thing happens in about 50 seconds - the #2 LED lights up. Not blinking, but always on. Together with it #4 LED lights up as well (but I am guessing that's because I have only 3 disks installed).

4. I release the reset button.
And then nothing happens. Power button keeps blinking, #2 and #4 stay on, RAIDar does not see the box. Now on the second hour and counting.

Any ideas as what's going on or what I am missing?

Thanks,
Alex

  • Ah, jeez. I think I figured it out.

In a table on that linked Boot options page the "LED Flashes - 2" does not mean "2nd LED will be flashing", it means "Two flashes of LEDs". Now all's good, NAS has showed up on RAIDer and what not.
  • I'm glad you were able to figure out your issue. In the future you can always contact support via email for any questions or issues you may have. There are limitations as to what support handles/supports but anything like this would have been supported.

  • Hi,

I am having the same issue. Was having issue seeing the NAS on the network (could see it but couldn't do anything with it), so thought I'd start from scratch. I wiped the drives via my PC, and then did a 'Factory Reset' via the back button.
I intervened after waiting 2 hours with both drives and as of 30 mins ago, I pulled out the second drive and did another restart.
RAIDar doesn't see it, and I see no new IP addresses on my LAN. Lets see what happens overnight. Blue light flashing and drive 2 light (slot empty) is shining solid.
I am using WD Greens (2TB) and have had a mountain of trouble with this thing all afternoon and night.
It would be great to have a console connection so I can watch what is going on. Really disappointed with this thing.
I am ready to throw this thing in the bin.

Maybe try wiping the drives again (WD lifeguard's "quick erase" is sufficient). Power down the NV, install the new drives, and just power it up. There is no need to do the back panel factory reset; with wiped drives the NV has to do that (since the OS partition is also gone).
  • Hi,

    Stephen, thanks for your reply.
I left it running overnight hoping it would recover, but got no further. I rebooted the box and got the 'Corrupt Root' message.
I then took your advice and tried to Zero the drives. It wont let me. I get 'Write Zeros Error" continually on both drives.
Strange it is almost as though I am being locked from Zeroing.
    Any advice?

  • Wait, don't reply yet.
I remounted the drive into Win7, and 'Created a simple volume', then recommenced the zeroing.
Working now, lets see what happens
    Will definitely let you know

  • Nope - no good.
Zero'd a drive ang getting "Corrupt Root" message.
  • LOL,

Me again. Tried one more thing before throwing it across the road. I did a factory reset with the wiped disk inserted.
Got all options I expected to and it is creating a RAID1 volume right now. Fingers crossed.

Thanks again for your reply Stephen. It pointed me in the right direction.

  • And we are good.
All set up + ssh (much easier)

    Thanks again!
