Transfer data to ReadyNAS 214 using spare bay

I have an old 2TB Seagate GoFlex Home that died and am upgrading to the ReadyNAS 214.  (The drive itself seems good, but the base is toast.)  The ReadyNAS has 3-3TB drives with the fourth bay open.  If possible, I'd like to just slide in my old drive and transfer the data to the X-RAID volume (about 1.5TB).

I do have an old sata-usb adapter that would work, but the transfer rate is so slow it'll take days (at best) to finish the transfer.

Hi birdnugg, as you are on xraid the 214 would try to integrate the newly inserted disk into the existing array, which is not what you need.

So, to my judgement to need to play the sata-usb game, unfortunately.

Other community members might have further suggestions. Good luck with fixing and kind regards.

The NAS won't mount your disk if you insert it, so you will need to connect it some other way (perhaps an usb/sata adapter or dock).

I don't know how the goflex drive is formatted, or how difficult it is to offload the data.

Another solution may be to install the 2TB drive into a spare Sata Port in your PC and transfer the data across your network using Windows/Mac.

If you have a 1GB network this would be quicker, you also need to have a backup regime in place for your NAS to another device (USB Drive/Cloud etc.)

Edit: The Goflex is either NTFS or Mac OS as far as I can tell

The goflex home is actually a small NAS.  I'm guessing the internal drive is formatted as ext, but that's just a guess.

  • Thanks guys.
The 2TB GoFlex drive is NTFS in my case.

I do have the option to connect to my desktop and transfer over the network, but unfortunately it's not a gigabit connection.

I was mostly hoping that adding it to the ReadyNAS would let me mount it as a second volume and then just copy/paste to the X-RAID volume. This is just a home setup and I'm definitely no expert in this area, so I'm going to play it safe and transfer slowly...
