Ultra 2 Plus 4.2.19 does not fix USB3 problems
I have 3 - 1TB Seagate 2.5" Freeagent Goflex drives (USB3). If I connect any of them to the Ultra 2 Plus front USB port and reboot the NAS, the NAS will not restart. It powers up and blinks the activity light once, but then stops. The two disk LED's on the NAS never turn on.
I had the same reboot issue with 4.2.17.
If I move the Goflex to one of the rear USB2 ports the NAS will start OK.
If I wait until after the NAS boots then connect the Goflex to the front USB3 port, it works OK.
Any ideas other than to use a different USB3 disk? I have disabled spindown using the Seagate utility. The reason why I like this model is because I have access to the SATA connectors if I ever need to do recovery, run Spinrite, etc... These drives should work. They work great on my desktop and laptop which both have the NEC USB3 controller.

How about the firmware for the USB3 controller? Are you using the NEC controller in the 2 bay Readynas?
Another thing I notice. When the Goflex is connected to the front USB3 and I powerup the NAS the LED's on the Goflex illuminate and stay lit.
When the Goflex is connected to a rear USB port, the LED's illuminate on powerup for a few seconds then cycle off then on again when the 2 internal disk lights illuminate.
maybe this will help you get a better handle on where this is getting hung up? - claykinAspirantAny idea on how to fix this problem so I can use the USB3 port?
- ChewbaccaAspirantWe have the drive in house and are working on the issue right now.
I will get back to you with a fix. - claykinAspirantAwesome. Great Jedi support is one of the best reasons to stick with Readynas!
- phaserAspirantHas this problem been fixed? I have a 1TB WD Passport with USB3, works fine with my USB3 port on my laptop but the front USB port on Ultra 2+ does not detect a drive. The light doesn't even come on for the drive; only the USB2 ports in back work to detect/mount the drive. Updated to newest firmware today, still no luck. I bought this drive and the ultra 2+ specifically for high speed backup. Thanks, Phil
- claykinAspirantNew BIOS coming to address problem. Stay tuned.
- yupsoloAspirantSame here... (that the NAS won't boot...)
I'll wait 'till the new update - MadCatAspirant

WD passport is powered from USB bus and Ultra+ is not able to provide enough power for hard disk from USB port. That might be the issue about WD passport drives. try to use powered USB3.0 hub between NAS and your external hard drive. - sleepy06405AspirantUpdating this old thread with my two cents worth of knowledge.. I'm an Ultra2+ owner and have seen this same issue with usb 2.0 disk on the front port on .20 firmware. Its a rocketfish enclosure, not sure what chipset. Based on what I read here I'll try a dc adapter on the drive and see if it resolves it.

You likely need to contact support and request V1.8 BIOS for the motherboard.
