Apr 12, 2012Wow my ReadyNAS Ultra won't start anymore
I have a ReadyNAS Ultra 4 ... i bought it only a few months ago, it's brand new and i barely used it
Today i tryed to start it... The blue LED light and the LCD screen powered up, then it power downs... It did that during a few minutes then shut down by itself
Now my ReadyNAS Ulra just won't power up.... When i press the power button nothing happens. No LED light, no LCD screen, no fan noise, nothing...
I can't believe i spent so much for this thing and it blew up so quickly... i thought i was buying quality when paying twice the price of other NAS.
Worst of all is that i don't even have a backup and i have 12terabytes of files. I didn't backup yet because this ReadyNAS is new and i didn't have the time to do it yet.
I hope it's just the power supply or something because i will never ever buy Netgear products again. It's so expensive i thought at least it would be reliable. This thing has less than 100 hours of use maximum and it already doesn't work anymore.
if it's just the power supply, can i buy a replacement and install it myself ? So i won't have to pay $100 to ship back the NAS to Netgear and wait 2 months to get it back ?
Now if i RMA this shit, i suppose that i will lose everything on my HD ? Because when i will put the drives in the new NAS, it will format them, right ?
How can i recover my datas on the failed ReadyNAS now ?
I spent thousands of dollars with netgear and i will never ever buy a netgear product again if i lose everything.

Can you disconnect the power to the unit, wait 5-10 minutes, reconnect the power and see if the NAS will boot?anarchoi wrote:

Hardware can and does fail at any time. With a large number of units out there it's inevitable that there will be problems with a few. Sounds like you've had an unfortunate run.anarchoi wrote:

Provided your disks are fine your data should be O.K. Always a good idea to have a backup. Important data should not be trusted to a single device. RAID is not a replacement for backups.anarchoi wrote:

Sounds like it's probably something like that.anarchoi wrote: if it's just the power supply, can i buy a replacement and install it myself ? So i won't have to pay $100 to ship back the NAS to Netgear and wait 2 months to get it back ?
It wouldn't take 2 months to get it back. Give NetGear support a call (http://www.readynas.com/support) and if they suggest a RMA ask for an advanced replacement. They will want to RMA the entire unit. Please edit the thread title (i.e. subject of first post in the thread) to include your case/RMA number (whichever you get).anarchoi wrote:

No. The disks can be migrated to another ReadyNAS on the same platform. See http://www.readynas.com/kb/faq/boot/how_do_i_migrate_disks_over_from_an_existing_readynas_to_anotheranarchoi wrote:

Please work with NetGear tech support. If they send you a RMA unit, put a spare disk (must not be from your array) in the replacement unit and update it to the same firmware as what you were running on the old unit (or a newer firmware). Then power down, remove the spare disk and follow the migration procedure. Monitor the NAS in RAIDar (http://www.readynas.com/downloads). In the unlikely event when you click setup you are prompted with a dialog box to choose RAID modes (rather than taken to Frontview in your web browser) power down immediately. - ReadySECUREApprenticeWell said mdgm. Follow what he has provided for you, as I would do the same. Advanced replacement on the device does not run $100 when I checked last, even for next business day. I agree, as well, this sounds like it may be the power supply.
- Retired_MemberHey, thanks for the very quick reply. Sorry for the aggressivity on first post, i am panicking at the idea of lsing 12tb of files :( This is my multimedia collection i have been building since 2007. I've never had problems with Netgear before, i'm just scared of losing everything... I know that hardware can't be perfect
I know RAID is not a backup, my two other ReadyNAS are backed up on external HDD... This is the only one that didn't have any backup and it's the one that failed :( I'm so unluckyCan you disconnect the power to the unit, wait 5-10 minutes, reconnect the power and see if the NAS will boot?
Just tryed doing that, it still doesn't work :(No. The disks can be migrated to another ReadyNAS on the same platform. See http://www.readynas.com/kb/faq/boot/how ... to_another
Here's my situation
Working NAS:
ReadyNas Ultra 4 Plus
4x 2TB drives
Failed NAS :
ReadyNas Ultra 4 (not the "plus" version)
4x 3TB drives
So it's not the exact same version, and also it's not the same sizes of HDD. Can you confirm me that i can switch my 12TB of HDD to the ReadyNas Ultra PLUS that is currently configured for 8TB ?Please work with NetGear tech support.
Ok, i opened a support ticketIf they send you a RMA unit, put a spare disk (must not be from your array) in the replacement unit and update it to the same firmware as what you were running on the old unit (or a newer firmware).
I'm not sure which firmware i was using... I think i upgraded to latest but i'm not 100% sure... Is there a way i can tell ? - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee Retired

Yes you can migrate between those two models. Try to ensure the firmware version on the unit you are migrating to is at least as recent as the one on the unit that won't boot. Ultra/Ultra Plus/Pro are all x86 ReadyNAS. Same platform.anarchoi wrote:

Not if the unit won't boot. Just try to make sure you're running at least as new firmware as what was on the dead unit. Since it's a fairly new unit and you were using 3TB disks I presume you probably were running 4.2.19. - Retired_MemberJust arranger advanced RMA with netgear. Waiting for my replacement unit now..
Is it possible to take the HDD inside my deffective ReadyNAS, hook them on my computer and copy all the files ?
I know those NAS use a special filesystem but there must be a way to access it without a ReadyNAS ? - ReadySECUREApprenticeanarchoi, we recommend waiting until you receive the replacement unit, and ensuring the drives are placed back into the proper slots so when the unit boots the array is unharmed and you can access your data.
- Retired_MemberOh no... i already removed drive #2 and #4... i'm not sure which order it was
I still have drive #1 and drive #3 in place in the NAS, in correct order.... So i just removed the "backup drives"
can i still "rebuild" my array without losing datas, only with drives #1 and #3 ??
i'd prefer to copy all files from my HDD instead of risking to lose everything when the new NAS will rebuild the array... There must be a way to do that ? - Retired_MemberAny idea if i can use "Recover My Files" to access the files on my ReadyNAS drives from my PC ?

No, it appears to be Windows-only (e.g. ntfs) not Raid+ext.anarchoi wrote: Any idea if i can use "Recover My Files" to access the files on my ReadyNAS drives from my PC ?

If you are using xraid2 You will need at least 3 of the disks to recover the data (that is, you only have 1 "backup" drive not 2).
You might wait for a support response before proceeding any further. - Retired_MemberNot sure if i was using XRAID2 but I had 12TB (4x3tb) and only 6TB was available so i thought the unavailable 6tb (2x3tb) were backup drives
if i place the drives in the wrong order, will i instantly lose everything or is there a way i can cancel the array rebuild and try a different order ?
I have 50% chance of placing the drives in the right order, and 50% chance of losing everything :(
Damn i'm very badlucked
